I started my public life because I was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement - some of it was racial and some of it was poverty

Dr. King understood that there was a connection between the two and that you needed to get the poor person in Apalachia and the poor person in Selma and the poor person in the Barrio working together


Bush and the Republicans have worked at dividing us


The first thing that we need to understand is that in a nation this wealthiest is that there shouldn't be anybody in the country that lives in poverty.

1) Everybody in the economy is suffering making sure everyone has Health care will help everyone

2) Making sure that schools work for everyone is a critical factor in making sure that everyone can compete in the economy.

3) Provide tax policies so that if you work you will not be poor in this country - expand EIC
close tax breaks on the top 2%

4) Create Jobs - It used to be that everyone could work and support your family - We need to build more in infrastructure

5) Build a green economy - windmills, solar panels, making buildings more energy efficient


IN the end we cannot do anything until we change the attitude that every child deservse to live not in poverty

Answer: It is a state policy and there is nothing I can do about that. What needs to happen is that we have to work on containing costs at the Universities.

Part of the problem is that states are diverting more resources to build more jails

3) That leaves us with millions of people who are not in the system legally but these people are 'defacto citizens'

to deport these people would turn us into a police state and is not realistic

2) making no distinctions between people
3) golden rule
4) means being a good steward of the earth
5) means treating people with compasion

It means that challenging their faith into their politics

It is important to understand that you don't have to have the same faith as me to be moral

there are jews that are more moral than me
there are muslims that are good decent people and are children of god
