Anyone know if having the announcer say "Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama approves this message" is
good enough to satisfy that stupid regulation or does it have to be the candidate themselves?

1. I presume the candidate...because when you say "approve" you are approving.
Just like if you say I owe you 1000 dollars, it is meaningless, but if I say it to you, it becomes meaningful. (My lips are silent)

2. If your attorney or someone else you are paying to speak for you says it it's not meaningless

3. But wouldn't the ad have to have the candidate say he/she approves the other speaking for him/her?
Just so the public knows...

4. No, they do that by spending the money to run the ad.

The announcer says the same thing "Candidate A approves this message." It's not like they record a new approval for each ad that is created, or what you're saying would apply now. They don't have to say "I approve the use of my approval recording for this ad."

5. They have to say it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipartisan_Campaign_Reform_Act

"The impact of BCRA first started being felt nationally with the 2004 elections. One immediately recognizable impact was that, as a result of the so-called "stand by your ad" provision, all campaign advertisements included a verbal statement to the effect of "I'm and I approve this message.""
