Has McCain gone completely insane?
I was listening to the CBC radio show "As it happens" (http://www.cbc.ca/asithappens/latestshow.html) and was horrified to hear....

The Cold War has been over for nearly twenty years. But there was a distinct chill in the air today, when Republican Presidential candidate John McCain spoke to the World Affairs Council in Los Angeles.

During a speech on foreign policy, he emphasized the need for the United States to be a model global citizen, and to work with democratic allies. But according to Mr. McCain, Russia is not one of those allies.

For the record, here is part of today's speech.

During the speech, McCain identified Russia as an enemy of the United States.

:wtf:

1. I was criticized in GD for saying that I thought he had "problems".

Since then, media guys have said on the cable shows that he's notorious for losing his cool behind closed doors and even in public.

8. What a crazy old coot...
If this guy wins the election, it'll be because we simply didn't try hard enough. And honestly, with a nutcake like this, it's not like we have to try ALL THAT HARD. C'mon!!

10. This scares the shit out of me! I lived in Russia for two years (2004-2006). I just visted again a
few months ago and it was seriously depressing to hear all of my old friends talk about how the Cold War is back. So much in the general attitude of many Russians has changed in the past few years. A lot of them feel that the US is out to get them.

By the way, as a side note, if you know a Russian person, ask him or her about the Russian Soul.
If not, just google it.
The concept of the Russian Soul is vital to most Russians and its existence and essence is constantly discussed and debated. It is the Russian Soul that has allowed Russia to survive so much tragedy, whereas other nations would have ceased to exist in the face of such misery (as one popular interpretation goes). I'm mentioning this because recently, when Hillary Clinton was asked about Bush's famous remark about looking into Putin's soul and seeing that he was a great guy, she responded that Putin has no soul. I almost fell out of my chair when I heard that. Translated to Russian and read by Russian people, this comment was so much more offensive than we might believe.
It wasn't just seen as attacking Putin, the man, but attacking his very being...his soul...his Russian Soul!

Its seems bizarre, but talking to so many of my Russian friends about this particular comment has been enlightening, to say the least.
They think America now HATES Russia and that Hillary Clinton and John McCain want war with them. These are educated, multilingual people who read the NYTimes and Guardian online. I can't imagine the mind frame of the millions of poor, uneducated Russians who read the state run papers.

12. The Russians are right -- the US IS out to get them.
And Putin is incomparably less terrible than Yeltsin was, or Gorbachev for that matter. Only recently has Russia begun to correct the mistakes of 20 years. And living standards are still lower than 20 years ago.
