Puerto Rican Governor Faces 18 Counts

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — U.S. authorities have announced an indictment charging Puerto Rico's governor with 18 counts in a long-running campaign finance probe.

Acting U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez said Thursday the indictment also charges 12 other people associated with Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila's party.

Rodriguez told reporters that the 13 are accused of running a conspiracy to illegally raise money to pay off Acevedo's campaign debts in 2000.

At the time, Acevedo was running to be the U.S. island territory's nonvoting member of Congress.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila is among several people named in a sealed indictment, officials said Thursday, as U.S. authorities made the first arrests in a long-running probe into his party's finances.

An Associated Press reporter saw at least five officials from the Popular Democratic Party as they were led in handcuffs into the U.S. federal building in San Juan.

An FBI spokesman declined to provide any details, saying there would be news conference later.

Acevedo has said previously that he was a focus of the grand jury probe but he was not among those seen in custody. His spokeswoman said he was still home sleeping at the time of the early morning arrests as far as she knew.

One-degree of separation: Obama superdelegate indicted
Puerto Rican Gov. Anibal Acevedo-Vila and twelve others have been charged in a sealed indictment by U.S. authorities on "18 counts in a long-running campaign finance probe."

Acevedo-Vila, a superdelegate for 2008 presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), endorsed Obama in February 2008.

MORE Obama criminal support! Go Obama...RW loves YOU!

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the indictment was still sealed, told The Associated Press that Acevedo was among several people named in the indictment.

A government official also said Acevedo would be charged in the indictment and that the governor's attorneys were expected to appear in court later Thursday. The official also spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case.

A Harvard-educated attorney and career politician, Acevedo, 45, served in Washington as the island's nonvoting delegate to Congress, and was elected governor in 2004 after campaigning on an anti-corruption platform. He is running for re-election this year.

Acevedo's party favors maintaining the island's semiautonomous relationship with the U.S. mainland. His leading opponent in the governor's race favors making Puerto Rico the 51st state.

As a wedge between voters and the candidate. All of the sudden we have several dems going down. This isn't the right time for this to happen.

14. I agree.
Obama doesn't run a private eye firm to vett his supporters better than the FBI can. If this guy is guilty I am glad he got caught, but it is nothing to be happy about.

I suppose there is negative poetic justice though in he and Spitzer cancelling each other out.

You should be ashamed but I know that you wouldn't recognize it. I know you are going to feign outrage when someone does the same thing to Clinton.

35. The mayor endorsed Obama, but the scandal hits Hillary's surrogates
Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 10:20 AM by ProSense

Campaign finance scandal of the day

The governor of Puerto Rico — who is an Obama superdelegate — was just charged with federal crimes, along with Democratic fundraiser Robert Feldman:

Puerto Rico's governor and four Philadelphians, including prominent fundraiser Robert M. Feldman, were charged this morning in San Juan with federal campaign-finance-related crimes.

The investigation of Gov. Anibal Acevedo-Vila, a Democrat who faces reelection this year, was triggered by the FBI's Philadelphia City Hall corruption probe in 2003.

Feldman, who raised more than $1 million for Democrats, including U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr. and Gov. (Ed) Rendell, was a former business partner of Ronald A. White, the late powerbroker who was the lead defendant in the Philadelphia corruption case.

Feldman was investigated but not charged in the Philadelphia case. In San Juan, he was charged with one count of conspiracy to violate federal election laws.

The governor was charged with conspiracy to violate federal campaign laws, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the IRS and filing a false tax return.

36. This is one screwed up Democratic party!!!!!
The party is in a civil war of such proportions that McCain must be lighting candles in church daily thanking his lucky stars.

Then we have the winners who can't seem to be able to keep their weiner in their pants: McGreevey and his threesome, Spitzer and his prostitutes, Paterson and his endless confessions about women and drugs (is the guy on sodium pentothal?), then we have the other jewel, the mayor from Detroit.

Now, the governor from Puerto Rico.

Nice going, the RNC must be about to send Dean some thank you notes.

:wtf:
