Poll question: I am an Obama supporter, and I don't owe Hillary Clinton my vote
Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 02:44 PM by democrattotheend
If Hillary Clinton gets the nomination, I don't owe her my vote.

But I owe it to all of the brave men and women who will be stuck in Iraq for at least another four years if McCain wins to vote for the Democratic nominee.

I owe it to the working people who are struggling and can't afford four more years of Bush-like economic policies to vote for the Democratic nominee.

I owe it to the people who can't wait four more years for health care to vote for the Democratic nominee.

I owe it to everyone who has fought for women's rights, civil rights, civil liberties, and other progress that could be undone by another Republican-appointed Supreme Court justice to vote for the Democratic nominee.

I owe it to the children and grandchildren I might have someday who will inherit a huge national debt burden if our government does not change course to vote for the Democratic nominee.

I owe it to all who have been victimized around the world by the Bush Administration's arrogant foreign policy to vote for the Democratic nominee.

I owe it to those who fought for progress before me and those who will inherit this country after me to vote for the Democratic nominee.

Therefore, I, Laura , pledge that no matter how mad Hillary Clinton makes me between now and November, if she is the Democratic nominee I will vote for her.

So, fellow Obama supporters and Clinton supporters, who is with me? Who will join in my pledge to remember the big picture in November? No matter how much we want Obama to be the nominee, no matter how we feel about the selection process, no matter how mad we get about her campaign tactics, no matter how mad the Clinton supporters at DU make us, no matter how many times we post on this board and threaten to withhold our votes, we must remember that this election is not about Clinton or Obama, it's about the millions of Americans whose lives are affected by it. So who's with me? Who will take the pledge by voting in the poll below?

NOTE: Clinton supporters, please just take the names and reverse them, saying "I don't owe Obama my vote, but I owe it to the American people to vote for the Democratic nominee"

3. That's the point. It's not about the candidates
It's about the American people. You can treat it as a vote against McCain, against four more years of Bush-like policies if you prefer. It's not about rewarding a candidate with your vote. It's about the people who will be effected by four more years of Republican misrule.

5. You forgot one...
I will vote for Hillary Clinton if she ends up with the most pledged delegates.

That's the only way I'm voting for her.

I will not vote for another installed candidate... not ever.

If she wins it legit I will vote for her. If she gets it by arm twisting... not a chance.

I won't vote at all.

2. You could say that we owe each other our votes.
The candidates owe us even more. They are not working hard enough to earn our votes, relying instead on having their names chanted at us until we choose one.

I want a progressive candidate, and am settling instead for the one who has merely spent the least time in Washington.

20. Yup. One could say that. I would, for example.

There's no way in Hell, for example, that I can vote for a candidate who claims that workers are unemployed in the US and Michigan because they lack training and education. This "blame the workers" ploy is beyond despicable.

6. If I had confidence that Hillary would represent Democratic ideals..
....to solve all those important issues you mentioned I wouldnt hesitate to vote for her should she win the nomination.

But she's spending so much time trying to tear down another Democrat to win that she never talks in a way that reassures me that she isnt just a right winger using our party to obtain power, so Im hesitant to give a strong afformative that I can vote for her.

7. Even so
She wouldn't veto Dem legislation like McDeath would.

We owe our childrens children our vote for the nominee.

9. If you don't vote for the Democratic nominee, you forfeit the right to complain about the McCain Adm
That's why I did not take seriously the whining from Nader voters about the Iraq voters in 2003, at least until they redeemed themselves by voting for Kerry in 2004.

23. I will, if she is the nominee
That was the whole point of the thread. Not because I owe her my vote, but because I owe the American people my vote.

24. If she is the nominee, absolutely I will vote for her. I've never said differently.
At this point, I think it would have to be a pretty skeevy "victory", but I will hold my nose and vote for her.

17. That was my point
My point was that I don't owe Clinton my vote, but I owe it to the American people to vote for her. I intended for Clinton supporters to be able to reverse the names and make the same pledge. I guess I should specify that in the OP.

18. I edited the thread to add that. Sorry if I wasn't clear originally.
You don't owe Obama your vote any more than I owe Clinton my vote. But I think we both owe it to the American people to support the Democratic nominee.

15. "I'll only vote for the Democratic nominee if his/her supporters at DU aren't mean to me ..."
By the way people post on DU, you'd think this would be one of the top vote getters.

It is also the most rediculous.

21. Good luck!
The people who say that sort of thing are so emotionally dysfunctional that no amount of logic can pierce the confusion they call perspective.
