Poll question: If Obama wins the nomination, should he choose a female running mate?
Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 10:41 PM by FlyingSquirrel
Before you answer, it's been rumored that McCain may choose Olympia Snowe. If Obama makes his selection before McCain, and does not choose a female running mate, this would create the possibility that the Repugs could steal our thunder and have the FIRST female VP of the US.

Should Obama choose a female running mate?

6. Right on
But with both candidates, we can't loose, and as it is some thinks it will hurt to go on for a while, I don't simply because they are both getting to states and little towns that have never had a democrat candidate visit, this week they are all over North Carolina, going to see Bill tomorrow, and Obama next week.

25. He should choose the most qualified candidate that can help
win the election. There are a lot of very well qualified people out there that are suitable for VP, but they may not help win the election for a variety of reasons.

8. OK, but if McCain has a female VP that could give him a lot of the
female vote that might otherwise go to Obama. It could turn the election in his favor.

13. I wonder how many are in that category
So feminist (or whatever the appropriate term is) that any ol' female would sway them - yet then willing to vote for McCain who is, well, not God's gift to feminist? Maybe it depends on the woman. Christie Todd Whitman vs. Condi vs. Snowe vs. Dole... (not that any of those in particular are contenders) very different women.

27. Totally agree, we need a VP who will be able to work in a very
positive way to lobby Congress to the Presidents agenda. The Repukes are going to try to stop all progress, and then blame the Dem's. We need a VP who will go over to Congress and rally the troops.

7. He should choose a qualified running mate that will help him win
and his choice should not be restricted by considerations of gender or race.

15. Strategically, he should choose a qualified Latino VP.
Latinos are the fastest-growing ethnic group in the U.S. Choosing a Latino running mate would go a long way toward encouraging Latinos to support him.

And that's a gender-neutral analysis.

19. mccain will probably choose
someone considerably younger in address to the age issue and an arch-conservative to appease the republican base. think santorum or george allen. i would say lieberman is a long shot considering his performance in 2000, but it would give the finger to the democrats.

obama's choice should be future minded. not a woman for the sake of choosing a woman. that may be too much change to be acceptable for some segments to stomach. i would hope he choose a candidate with the succession in mind in eight years. his coattails are long as has been oft stated and his veep should likewise be chosen foreshadowing into 2016. the foundation for a future democratic majority to support and continue his policies should be first and foremost.
