When will the GOP pick their VP candidate?
Occurred to me when voting in a poll here about Dems. Do nominees always wait for the convention to announce? Seems like McCain could pick earlier. On the other hand, will they wait for their convention a few days after the Dems? That could give them an advantage in picking.

1. Isn't that part of the Convention ritual? It seems like it's always that way.

2. Not in 2000 and 2004 it wasn't.
Both parties' VPs were picked before the convention.

6. Not until after our convention, because the GOP convention is Sept 1-4
The only reason for McCain to waste the press cycle is if we actually have a nominee before the convention AND McCain starts slipping in the polls.

Unless that happens, he'll save the press broo-ha-ha for late August, probably about a week before the convention and get a round of good press right before their pep rally. If he does a "good" job picking a running mate (somebody the press and/or public is genuinely excited about), the pick could dominate the press cycle through the campaign.

And, of course, early September is when most folks start beginning to think about thinking about the Presidential election...
