Obama's appeal to a new generation in Pennsylvania
Edited on Sat Mar-29-08 08:51 AM by bigtree
title from The Swamp: http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/politics/blog/2008/03/obamas_appeal_to_a_new_generat.html

PITTSBURGH -- Barack Obama’s voice rang out across the cold, depleted expanse of lawn connecting the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall to the broad, busy avenue below. Audible for blocks in any direction, the familiar cadence drew curious onlookers away from their daily routines and up the Hall’s wide staircase.

Those who approached were met with an odd sight: Hundreds of people huddled around a pair of loudspeakers, apparently mesmerized by a disembodied voice. These hardy souls, blowing into cups of coffee, shoulders hunched against the chill, were just a few of the people who couldn’t get tickets to see Obama in person. University students, administrative staff, restaurant employees, retail workers, faculty members -- they were all settling for the next best thing.

This was an overwhelmingly pro-Obama crowd, cheering vociferously for his pledges to improve health care coverage, his tuition offset/community service plan, and for this jab at the Patriot Act: “You’ll have a President who taught the Constitution, who knows the Constitution, and who’ll obey the Constitution.”

Sen. Obama, making his first Pittsburgh appearance in the contest to win Pennsylvania's Democratic primary, packed about 2,500 fans into an auditorium in Oakland and drew roars of applause when he talked about ending the war in Iraq.

"We cannot wait to bring this war in Iraq to an end," Obama told a capacity crowd during the rally at Soldiers & Sailors Military Museum and Memorial. "We cannot wait. That's why I'm running for president."

The crowd, chanting "O-ba-ma!" and "Yes-we-can!," greeted Obama and Sen. Bob Casey, a Scranton Democrat, with a prolonged standing ovation until Obama asked for the audience to sit down.

Borrowing a quote from Abraham Lincoln, Casey said Obama appeals to the "better angels of our nature" and will unify Americans. "This campaign is a chance for America to chart a new course and go down a different path -- a path of a new kind of politics and, finally, a path of hope and healing," he said.

Casey called Obama of Illinois the "one person uniquely qualified to lead us in this direction."

"He has the kind of judgment that is steady in the eye of the storm -- the kind of leader who is ready to be commander and chief of the United States," Casey said.

At a town hall event at a local high school gymnasium, Obama praised George H.W. Bush—father of the president—for the way he handled the Persian Gulf War: with a large coalition and carefully defined objectives.

"The truth is that my foreign policy is actually a return to the traditional bipartisan realistic policy of George Bush's father, of John F. Kennedy, of, in some ways, Ronald Reagan, and it is George Bush that's been naive and it's people like John McCain and, unfortunately, some Democrats that have facilitated him acting in these naive ways that have caused us so much damage in our reputation around the world," he said.

In his speech Friday night, the Illinois senator charged that Clinton, for all her criticism of the current President Bush, has too often gone along with his decisions.

"I do think that Sen. Clinton would understand that George Bush's policies have failed, but in many ways she has been captive to the same politics that led her to vote for authorizing the war in Iraq," he said. "Since 9/11 the conventional wisdom has been that you've got to look tough on foreign policy by voting and acting like the Republicans, and I disagree with that."

Obama himself challenged Clinton's argument that her experience in government would make her a better candidate in November against McCain.

"If the contest between McCain and the Democratic nominee is who's been there longer, John McCain wins!" he said to laughter from the crowd.

"If the argument is who is going to pursue a foreign policy like George Bush's, then John McCain wins. If that's the criteria for being tough, if that's the criteria for answering the 3 o'clock phone call after you voted for the war in Iraq and you went along with George Bush's policies when it came to Iran and not talking to leaders that we don't like, then John McCain wins that fight."

11. Shhhhh! The Hillarians don't want these young people to get mesmerized
by our candidate. It would be bad for the country if 10 million new Dems vote in November just because he's captivating. you're not allowed to have hope, goddammit!

Thanks for sharing. Now, me being a Hillary supporter and I haven't seen any negative posts, lets see if Obama's supporters can do the same in-kind with a Hillary image post? :)

16. I took my 18 year old son to see Obama yesterday at a town hall meeting
in Greensburg, PA. He was mesmerized and was cheering and clapping enthusiastically. Obama really strikes the right note for young people. He talked honestly about the challenges that these kids will have to face, but there was such an underlying current of hope for the future if we all work together, that he had the crowd of ALL ages on their feet cheering throughout the rally.

My son got to shake Obama's hand before leaving and thanked me numerous times for taking him. He also attended several Kerry campaign events back in 2000, but this is the first presidential election in which he'll be old enough to vote. He said he was blown away with Obama's speech and with the way he handled questions from the crowd. I know of one young Pennsylvanian who will be voting for Obama on April 22.

My husband and I were both Edwards supporters originally, but we also will be voting for Obama. That's 3 votes for Obama from our household!

23. PA Dem, you must be proud. Teach the babies.
But it looks like this time, we're learning from the babies. I have been astounded at the number of parents who have been won over by their kids. Bob Casey even said that it was his four kids that finally helped him make his choice. Same with Maria Shriver, and Caroline Kennedy.

As a former Edwards supporter myself, it was my two nephews who finally convinced me to give Obama a serious look. So far, I haven't been disappointed. Same with my CEO (former Clinton supporter), it was her Republican son & husband that got her & her daughter on the bandwagon. I think Obama will do quite nicely here in NC.

Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 07:16 AM by bigtree
I believe he's a good Democrat, an outstanding American, devoted to his family, and a gentleman. These policy differences and political squabbles will fade and we'll be challenged to support one of these folks. I haven't allowed myself to build up some wall of resistance to his candidacy that I won't be able to overcome as we turn to face the republican nominee. It is my pleasure to present our candidates in a favorable light. We can't always remove the controversies from our discussions here, but it helps to look beyond the attacks and the posturing and to discover just what they're offering which will actually have a concrete *effect on our lives. And, it doesn't hurt to remind ourselves that these are two outstanding Americans, and, that they are as human as you or me. I hope these images allow us to reflect on that. And, I hope that the crossover posts give folks leave to take a look across the political fences we've erected.

28. Wow. You definately do present a good example for us all.
While I can't feel warm and fuzzy about Hillary, I've said often that I would definately vote for her if she prevails. The harm that would be done to our future and most importantly the future of our sons and daughters would be unforgiveable.

29. Both candidates are a little too centrist for my personal tastes,
Edited on Mon Mar-31-08 12:04 AM by Forkboy
But I agree that both are good people.

I think part of the reason it's gotten so ugly is that there's actually very little difference between the two, leaving just a lot of petty stuff to bicker over. There's been little talk of any real issues from both camps, and when there is it sinks fast.

It is my pleasure to present our candidates in a favorable light.

We need about a hundred more willing to do the same. I love your posts like this, regardless of which candidate it's about.

A big problem for me is that I just don't feel anything inspiring about either candidate, so it's tough to remain positive about the election in general. Obviously, either one will be a huge improvement, and one way or the other we'll be celebrating the first woman president or the first African American president, something I've always hoped to see in my lifetime (and even though I'm only 40 it's been a little iffy that I would). But, I truly feel the country, nay..the world, needs something far more bold and daring than what we're being offered. I feel events are rapidly overtaking our systems ability to deal with them in a helpful way, and going over a cliff at 50 mph is no better than going over at 75 mph to me. I really think we're in for a tough, tough road ahead, and I'm not sure that slight shifts back to the left is good enough anymore.

Anyways, your OP, and your reply here, are very cool and much appreciated.

33. very impressive bigtree! i hope your approach catches on
i'm not a particularly active poster in gd: p, but i do read it often enough, mostly for the entertainment value - in a soap opera kind of way.

i think your new method of posting these really great obama threads is a huge credit to you and very worthy of respect.

while i don't expect this forum to suddenly become civil, i hope that at least a few people see the effort you are making and step back and maybe tone down a bit (hey, one thing i've picked up since becoming an obama supporter is "hope" ;-) ).

thanks for trying something new and heretofore unheard of in gd: p. i'll be reading your obama threads, and your hillary threads too!
