9,000 Party-switchers to the Democratic Party in Ky. lose right to vote....
Edited on Sat Mar-29-08 09:26 AM by ElsewheresDaughter
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Thousands of Kentuckians have switched political parties over the past three months, apparently in hopes of voting in the Democratic presidential primary.

Problem is Secretary of State Trey Grayson says Kentucky law forbids people who switch parties after Dec. 31 from voting in the presidential primary.

Grayson said Kentucky election officials have been warning political groups and campaign workers that encouraging Republicans and independents to switch to the Democratic Party will be of no benefit in the primary.

Some 9,000 people have switched parties since Jan. 1.

33. Limpballs was asked by NCGOP to lay off
cause they have some candidates running tough primaries, including the gubenatorial contest.

So Limpballs announced on Friday for NC republicans to hold off till further instruction.

What a jerk he is. But I'm glad our GOP at this time aren't going to f' up the
democratic primary.

2. That's always been the rule
Dec. 31 is the deadline as quoted in the KY Dem's Delegate Selection Plan from a year ago.

Silly people.

4. Indeed
I wish our state made it harder to switch parties. We have a 14-day period but I wish it was a longer time before the caucuses that other parties had to switch.

5. I wish ALL states did this.. Parties should be selecting their OWN candidates
I understand why some people want to be "independents", but if you do not have strong enough feelings for either party, to actually identify yourself with them, then you just sit out the primaries, and vote any way you like in the generals.

If you want to be part of the selection process, then join up..and do it BEFORE the actual campaigning starts..

It would be like High School "A", having their Homecoming Queen candidates, being chosen by High School "B"..

11. There is no party registration in my state
and we don't need it, thank you very much. Vermont does just fine without it.

17. States that don't have registration by party are entirely another breed
and they do their own thing.. that's not the issue here..

The deliberate skewing of primary elections is the issue.

In states with NO formal afilliation, there would be no way to even try and track mischief, so it must not be an issue..

Vermont does not strike me as very fertile gound for Limbaugh to plant in anyway

15. goldcanyon florida has a closed primary
and we don't have those idiotic caucuses either. Republicans are not allowed to switch to try and throw an election. :)

They cannot win unless they "cheat" at something...and when they DO win, they screw everything up so it takes decades to repair...:eyes:

if that is the case, they can vote for the dem in the fall. just being unhappy with the republicans need not give you a say in the choice of dem nominee

21. So Obama's 'BE A DEMOCRAT FOR A DAY' campaign is on hiatus in Kentucky.
Poor Obama, he's not going to be able to spoon feed republicans at the same time he is stopping 2.2 million democrats from having their voices heard.

2.2 million democrats - - that's an appalling number

24. The same law is in effect in NYS my friend
In NYS we have a closed primary. It is open only to party members.
You need to be registered in the party to vote in the primary.
If you are already registered as a member of a political party, it takes one year for your membership to switch.

I think it is a very thoughtful law.

27. LOL. Obama opposed a re-vote in Michigan because people who voted in the Republican Primary
(the RNC counted Michigan's votes) wouldn't be given a chance to vote for a second time in the Democratic re-vote. :eyes:

Edited on Sat Mar-29-08 10:31 AM by SoCalDem
to vote in the opposing party's primary. The republican candidate has already been chosen, long before their primary, so they would probably have just sat this one out anyway.

If they were gung-ho to become a democrat, they had plenty of time to switch BEFORE 12-31...If they are truly "fired-up" for HIllary or Barack, they can still vote for the eventual candidate...this November :)
