The Only Obama Supporters I Know Are the Ones on DU
Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 12:09 PM by QC
Seriously.

I live in an area where Democrats are not exactly plentiful, and the ones I do know here mostly support Clinton, though there were also some Edwards people around.

My entire impression of the Obama community comes from its members on DU. Make of that what you like.

Note: Edited to make it harder to miss the point.

122. I live in Arlington, VA - Obama Country
Tons of Obama stickers and other Democratic stickers in the garage I walk through to get to the Metro. A couple Hillary stickers, but not many. It's such a political area that about half the cars in the garage have some sort of political bumper sticker. I've never seen any Republican stickers in the garage.

78. Then why would you expect to see Obama signs?
Your election is over, Obama and Clinton didn't campaign there. Hillary declared it a victory and moved on.

Hillary agreed to follow the rules, and now wants another do-over even after she won the first time.

What's up with THAT?

There was large of independent Obama supporters working high traffic street corners with Obama signs before the election. They were all white. I never saw anyone with Clinton signs if that means anything. But Clinton won the county overwhelmingly, not at all surprising.

He's not on DU and most of the Dems I work with in Massachusetts support Obama and are not on DU. My state, CT, voted for Obama and most never heard of DU.

Obama has the lead in pledged delegates and has won many more states than Clinton. Obviously there must be Obama supporters beyond DU.

And they live in New York (as I do). Her campaign changed their minds. I was never a Clinton supporter, but I couldn't change their minds, or, in the case of my daughter, help her decide, but HRC did it for them.

I don't know a single Hillary supporter, and I do know a lot of Obama supporters - in New York. My daughter who lives in NYC says Obama signs abound, Clinton, not so much.

Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 12:16 PM by izzybeans
everyone I know who is a democrat voted for Obama. My mother is heading up the political merchandise committee at their local Obama office as we speak. It's a good thing my grandmother and dad are sensible people. Because if DU were my only impression of Hillary supporters I would believe that b.s. about Limbaugh's operation chaos.

At work this was nearly uniformly true. But you'd have to understand that he has written several letters of support for our grant making foundation and without that support some of our programs would not be running at their current capacity. So, yeah he's a popular figure here in Illinois, especially in the non-profit world where I work.

I think I know where you live and I live 15 miles away, and my town solidly voted for Obama in the primary, he lost Mass by just a few points, and many Richardson, Biden, Edwards and other people have come around to supporting Obama since the others dropped out later. So if the primary in Mass were held today, I doubt Hillary would see the same win again.

My experience is exactly the opposite -- I don't know any Clinton supporters. All my friends and family are for Obama.

The weird thing is -- everyone in my family is sensitive to the political views of the others. My Mom has been a somewhat militant feminist type her whole life, so I thought she might be supporting Hillary, so I never broached the subject with her. In other words, everyone in my family came to the conclusion to support Obama independently due to their own research and knowledge. No peer pressure.

61. Finally, a civil response, which is the point.
A candidates' supporters do shape, for better or worse, many people's impressions of the candidate. Any one of us here might be some person's only impression of a candidate or of the party.

When supporters of candidates conduct themselves as jerks, that rubs off onto the candidate. I have to fight that temptation, because I know that Barack Obama has little to do with a collection of rude and ill-tempered shut-ins on a website, but I am human, after all.

It is a virtual certainty at this point that Obama will get the nomination. His supporters need to be thinking now in terms of bringing in those who supported other candidates, because there is, though many seem to forget it in the heat of the primary, another and much tougher election in November.

I am going to vote for him this fall, and I would like to feel good about it, rather than feeling that I am once again forced to choose the lesser of two evils.

58. Again, Obama supporters miss the point
Obama may be a nice guy, but for the most part, his vocal supporters here on DU are asses. If you live in a red state, city or town and are looking for comrades and come to DU, and you find that unless you support Obama, you are less than dirt, well why would you support the guy?

Not everyone can travel, so that "get out more" quip is as rude as his supporters seem to be. You do your candidate a real disservice by being so rude and crude, and you are. There are plenty of people who are either home bound by circumstances or are in an area which dems are in the vast minority. When they come to DU they assumed they are coming to a liberal haven, but if they disagree with an Obama supporter, they are treated like crap. It is tacky, tacky, tacky. When your candidate comes begging for their support, don't think that they will forget how they were treated by his supporters. McCain with the media backing doesn't look all that mean and scary.

I haven't seen a single Hillary sign or bumper sticker, nary a one.

My guess is at least 80% of New Orleans is gung ho for Obama, and most of the rest are undecided.

Bill Clinton gave a speech a few blocks from my house the other day. Nobody on my street, at the nearby cafes, or in my family even bothered to go.

64. I'm guessing you must not live in Illinois.
He's got a lot of support in Illinois even here downstate (read as GOP dominated) areas.

:hi:

My advice to ANYONE on here these days (no matter the candidate they support) is not to take everything here too seriously. There is a phenom in cyberspace that I call mass stupidity, and it happens every four years with minor outbreaks every two years. Oddly enough, it seems to occur in concert with US Primary Election seasons.

Seriously, I do try and remind everyone that DU by its very definition is made up of a group of passionate political fanatics. Just by being on here we are self defining as political junkies with a desire to discuss (and argue) the merits of the candidates and the process. I do not think that everything I read on here is 100% representative of the candidates or their opinions, and I would hope that everyone else sees that too, or else the Dem party is screwed beyond redemption for all time.

Peace to you. This shall pass (maybe like a kidney stone, but it WILL finally pass.)

:hi:

86. Yep, and this Primary has been every bit as painful, I think.
I know my opinion probably doesn't mean a whole lot to anybody else, but I will tell you that Obama is the one politician I have met in my lifetime that I think is the "real deal." I hate to admit how long I've been at it, but I walked away from talking to him at a local Dem dinner--back when he was first announced in his Senate Primary--and I told my husband that this was "the one" I am gonna see in my lifetime.

I signed up to work with his Primary campaign that night, and I have never wavered in my support for the man in spite of the fact that my husband worked (got paid for it, btw) for Obama's competition in that same primary.

Yeah, I am that hardcore in my belief in this man.

Peace to you and yours.

103. Yeah, seems like that aspect of DU has gone by the wayside.
Seems like that happens in every Primary at some point or another, but this time the acrimony started so early. Seems like the rancor was hanging out on display almost from the outset (again, no matter the candidate) and I noticed it too. I have no real explanation for it that is anything other than a theory--so take the rest of this post with a grain of salt--ok?

I think part of what we are seeing in this election is the pent up frustration from the last decade. I honestly think people are pissed off beyond reason and part of the rancor is people venting. I also think that a part of what we are seeing is the large number of neophytes that are becoming involved in the process. Usually that brings a lot of enthusiasm with it, and sometimes that can manifest in some less than productive ways. (Don't get me wrong--I have seen campaign vets make asses of themselves too--this is not intended as a slam on anyone--or maybe it is a slam on everyone, if you want to get technical...)

In any event, I do think we can get past this. I am not ready to write of the Dem party as a whole, and I shudder to think what this would be on some of the other online boards where the mods are less vigilant.

are liking Obama. It absolutely astounds me. They have not said they are going to vote for him, but they ask if I think he will beat Hillary. My mother keeps bringing him up. I think she watches the View.

They have only voted against one Republican in their whole lives. Doc Hastings.

In my immediate family, my husband and 4 voting age kids, Obama is the one. My fireman son reports his whole dept is for OBAMA. My two daughters who are teachers in the same Pre-School, say Obama seems to be the better liked. (Most of their colleagues are women. Our youngest son, a musician, we know lots of his friends and they are all talking.... "OBAMA".

My neighbor across the street has changed his mind as a Clinton Delegate. He called and said I will cast my Ballot on April 3 for "your guy". What is amazing about him and his beautiful wife, also in their 80s, is that they are not online. He is a Veteran for Peace and attends the meetings regularly.

I have no one to argue Clinton vs Obama with in real life.

And I work at a University where I come into contact with LOTS of people DAILY. The ONLY Hillary supporter I know lives in DC and works for a defense contractor. Hmmm.

Basing your opinion of a group of people based on what you see in GDP is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. We're like animals in here! I encourage you to leave your computer at once, go outside, preferably somewhere where there are other humans, and interact.

If I allowed myself to base my impression of Hillary supporters on what I saw on this board, I'd think Hillary supporters are all bitter, delusional enablers of a compulsive liar and self-aggrandizer who think NO tactic is too dirty if it results in a win. I'd also think that most Hillary supporters are racist idiots who claim sexism every time their candidate is called on something. I'd also think they have no ability to have a debate using anything more than emotion - fact, logic and reason appear meaningless to them.

But I DON'T base my opinion of Clinton supporters on DU's GDP. I believe most Hillary supporters are WAY smarter than the bullshit that gets posted here. And honestly, I believe most Hillary supporters outside of GDP are getting close to being ready to throw in the towel - we'll find out when the fundraising numbers come out for March.

I seldom go anywhere but the grocery store, but have managed to give away ten buttons in the past couple of weeks. Young, old; male, female; black, white--but most have gone to men and to whites. I live in a Congressional district with an embarrassingly high population of Republicans (Newt's old disrict) and am giving buttons away right and left.

I just ordered my second stash, since my original ten have been given away. I'm putting Obama's name on someone else's lapel for only a dollar a pop.

So, yeah. I'd say Obama supporters exist outside of Democratic Underground.

Have seen Romney and McCain bumper stickers, but no Hillary. Saw her signs on approaches to polling places the day of the primary, but that's all.

133. Oh I see. Hillary's supporters walk in, call everyone cultists and vow to defend America
from the disgusting sort of person who post on DU, and it's Obama's supporters who need to back down? There are actually orchestrated conspiracies, planned off DU on sites controlled by Hillary's supporters, to mass post inflaming stories in a circle jerk of trolling. They have a quid pro quo agreement to recommend each others articles, just to try and keep antagonizing posts as high as possible, with the sole intention of causing disharmony. And then, after they get the response that they want, they loudly decry the poisonous environment caused by the "Hillary Haters" and stamp off like children. But they'll be back tomorrow. It may be with a different ID, but no matter how many Hillary trolls get banned, the same number seems to always be around.

Hillary isn't running a civil campaign, and neither are her supporters. They aren't trying to make friends here, they are trying to demotivate and harass people who don't support their candidate. The same can be said for a few of the Obama supporters here, but most are surprisingly civil considering that Hillary's "path to the White House" necessarily requires her to overturn the will of the Democratic body politic by appealing to a shadowy group of Party elite on the grounds that a black man can't win the general election.

135. I'm an Obama supporter, and I'm dead sexy, baby. I also make a mean latte.
And I have great taste in music.

Make of that what you like.

136. Me too. I consider DU home of the Obama campaign.
I know a few people in my neighborhood who support Obama, but there are more Hillary signs in my black and latin@ neighborhood in Texas. DU gives the impression that 90% of America is pro-Obama because they've pushed everyone else off this board.
