Pelosi: Dem nominee will be chosen in June! (ABC)
Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 12:04 PM by kpete
Bay City NewsHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in San Jose tonight that she does not expect a summer-long fight between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama over the Democratic nomination for president. Instead, the nominee will become apparent "shortly after" the last primary in June, she said.

Pelosi, D-San Francisco, addressed the opening night of the state Democratic convention. After her speech, the first woman to be Speaker of the House was mobbed by autograph-seekers. While signing autographs, she answered two reporters' questions, including if she thought the uncommitted Democratic superdelegates, who will likely be the deciding factor in the nomination fight, should make their preference known by July. "It will be much sooner, right after the public has voted," Pelosi said. Superdelegate Bob Mulholland, a Democratic National Committee member, also expects that the nominee will be decided well before the party's August convention in Denver. "People ought to just relax," Mulholland said. "Whoever is ahead by 50 delegates or so, you'll see the super delegates move that direction. It'll just happen naturally." Mulholland has not committed to either Clinton or Obama. In her speech, Pelosi told state Democratic activists that they cannot let the hotly contested primary between Clinton and Obama affect their efforts in the November election against Republican John McCain. "We have two great candidates for the President of the United States. At the end of the day our target, our eye on the prize, must be November," Pelosi said. "We must unite after this primary is over. I hope that will be before too long." The convention lasts through Sunday. Former President Bill Clinton is scheduled to address the convention on Sunday morning.

1. That would work for me ... June sounds good
But, we shall see how it goes. I think after each coming primaries you will see
unsolicited super delegates moving to the winner. In June you will see the really
big names coming on board and making a statement of support.

4. She can say that but there will be a fight to the convention
We gotta count FL/MI and also, SD's can change there mind to the end. So, let the woman flap her gums and see what it gets her.

6. Michigan primary has been ruled unconstitutional. There is
no way they can count the results of that election. So Hillary can put that is her pipe and smoke it. They will probably seat Florida but it won't be based on that vote. Barack would never agree to it. I absolutely DO NOT believe that the committee would ever rule that when they have signed documents from both candidates prior to the campaign beginning. Both parties have to agree to a rule change at the end of a primary. Good luck with that Hillary.

26. It's time to accept the situation, Hillary will not be the nominee or the next president.
I think if you accept things now, it won't be so hard later on when she eventually has to suspend her campaign in the future.

I think it will happen sooner like you. But June is the last primary.
So, I think she had to qualify it like that being the politician that she is.

11. This deeply, deeply saddens Hillary that Pelosi
Obama and Dean are purposefully disenfranchising the people of Michigan and Florida. This is why Hillary speaks at every campaign stop about the voices of 10 million people not being heard.

13. Not letting you vote twice is NOT disenfranchisement. Blame your state's leaders for throwing your
vote away because it's not the DNC, Barack or Hillary's fault. And the rest of the country is thoroughly unimpressed by the whining from states that broke the rules.

10. 'splains why Bill Clinton is coming to Montana. Our primary is June 3
Suddenly us peons in the vast fly-over portion of the nation have some value to the Clintons.

Sucks to be Bill. The mayor of Missoula just came out for Obama.
http://www.billingsgazette.net/articles/2008/03/30/news/state/32-obama.txt

Thinking Team Clinton screwed the pooch by so many months of dissing the heartland and talkin up the import of the big states. When they come to call in Montana, they are eating crow instead of fried chicken.

36. By Hillary's criteria, after June 3, probably not! LOL
We didn't matter until those big states didn't provide what HRC thought was her due. Now we matter.

After we all vote in our primary, we probably won't matter again. I even hear a lot of life-long republicans saying they would vote Obama over McCain in the general election. For Hillary, they would just come out to heckle (probably why the campaign is sending Bill out first).

21. Dear Senator Leahy/Speaker Pelosi, its called Democracy
Dear Senator Leahy/Speaker Pelosi,

You have commented that Senator Clinton does not have any good reason to contest in elections/primaries. While I can give you several, I shall just give you one- Democracy. I know it is a bold concept, hard to fathom even for somebody with your knowledge and intelligence, but it is one for which several people have fought for and even died for. It is also sort of mentioned in the Constitution. You know that document that you should have read in your capacity as the Chairperson of the Judiciary Committee, Speaker of the House, but one that you have obviously not read thoroughly enough to grasp all the nuances.

So, my humble advice to you is instead of bullying people into forgoing their rights, maybe you should go back and read that document. Oh, while you are at it, you may also look at a phrase called ``High Crimes and Misdemeanors'' and start using my tax dollars for what you are supposed to do as opposed to taking away my right to express my opinion on who should lead this country. If you are incapable of doing so, maybe we can find somebody else for that job. There are several more capable senators/representatives ready to take over that job (Senator Feingold/Representative Kucinich comes to my mind).

Thanks

It may be over before, but for the sake of our Dems in Montana and South Dakota, I HOPE NOT. I just hope our candidates can finesse this without suiciding.

33. All things considered, I think it is a good thing.
We are experiencing growing pains. We have two strong candidates. We have a weak opponent (thank the gods) to face down before November and we have an electorate that is FED UP with business as usual. The path is treacherous, but I truly believe that when these two set out to unite us, they will accomplish that. Our two will leave us a legacy and it will be good.

32. Brazile Explains Credentials Committee
Talking Points Memo
Brazile Explains Credentials Committee

03.30.08 -- 1:34PM
By Josh Marshall

Donna Brazile was on This Week this morning and explained how the credentials committee works. If she's right, and I'm sure Brazile knows this stuff like the back of her hand, it's even worse for Clinton than I thought. According to Brazile, in addition to the twenty-five members of the Committee appointed by Howard Dean, the rest of the committee will be made up of 3 members apiece from each state. In other words, it works sort of like the senate, where all states are counted equally, regardless of their size. Since Obama has won far more states than Clinton, that should mean he has a decisive majority on the credentials committee.
