Salon: Michelle Obama on "ignorant" America

Michelle Obama on "ignorant" America

Michelle Obama has come in for new scrutiny, from Fox News especially, for remarks she made in South Carolina back in January. Some people are reading them as dismissive of Americans -- read "ignorant" white Americans -- but I didn't see it that way at all.

Here's what she said:

We don’t like being pushed outside of our comfort zones. You know it right here on this campus. You know, people sitting at different tables -- you all living in different dorms. I was there.

1. She gives a fabulous speech. It's sickening to see how they take her remarks out of context.

2. ". . . from Fox News especially. . ."
And Joan Walsh, the author, actually backs Michelle in this matter.

What the hell is your point?

10. She says good things.
But she always says the kind of things that do well in 30 sec soundbytes.

11. Yeah, good things
So why help them disparage her? Everybody wants the candidate to fight, but then they roll over themselves when the candidate needs them. People need to grow their own backbone for a change.

4. We/they are doing that to both candidates and their surrogates.
Taking an essentially innocuous statement and escalating it into what the observer wants it to say.

What's alarming is that so many people believe the spin and make their judgments based on it.
