Asked my Husband if he thought that Barack Obama would become President, and here is what he said:
Edited on Mon Mar-31-08 01:30 AM by FrenchieCat
"There is no way that in the 21st century, a charismatic man of mixed race, born in our 50th state, with the name of Barack Hussein Obama; blessed with the gift or oratory and extreme intelligence, and who generates enthusiasm, large crowds, and so much money, with a message of change supported by the people could win the Democratic Nomination.....and not become President.

Whether he is here due to God or fate or destiny or providence, this man presents himself at this time for a reason.

It is maybe because as a country, we can no longer "hope" to solve the greatest problems of this world, unless we first solve our own.

How can we ask the Jews and the Palestinians to make peace, if we have not done our own peacemaking right here in our own country?

How can we claim to represent goodness as a Western power, if we cannot exercises goodness by understanding our own "issues" to get beyond them?

I have faith that America will elect this man, who fits no previous mold, and who represents the mosaic collective of us all. In so doing, the world will see that we are who we say we are.

It will mean that even before his first act as President, Barack Obama will have symbolically restored a broken trust by simply lifting his hand and placing it on the bible and repeating the words that would entrust him to carry out the work of the highest office of our land.

Just by who he is alone, Barack Obama will do in one day, more than any other possible President could do in 100 days or more at this time.

That by itself makes him the most electable and I believe that he will win, because he must for the sake of our nation's future."

I then gave my husband a kiss.

Lovemaking and affection are icky? Humor is icky? What?

Since we're given such leeway during this protracted election season, I'm going to take the opportunity to state that you appear to be something of a worn-out screwball.

10. And again, if by fluke McCain won, where would we be?
same place we are in today. That's not progress. I don't believe that the Old White Man will win just because he is what he is. That's the worse message we could ever send out to the world, would be electing McCain. After that, we could only expect and get nothing more than more wars.

Have said all along that electing Obama would immediately improve US relations with the world. It would completely repudiate the message from 2004 that the US has completely lost it's mind or just didn't give a damn.

believe that it was in December of that year, when the Supreme Court decided that they knew better what was good for us, in terms of counting votes. I will never forget.

35. Well, the Europeans thought it was a fluke in 2000
Saw that the SCOTUS had stolen it, but couldn't imagine the US would tolerate when we got the chance to fix it in 2004. They were willing to accept that we had gotten a bit complacent and lazy in our good fortune, so an aberration like W would be corrected at our next opportunity. They really believe/envy the way we can peacefully change administrations without rending the fabric of our democracy. That's why they were so surprised in 2004 (we were in Germany at the time), they never thought we wouldn't fix such an obvious mistake.

Upon reading your good husband's words I first wanted to say as a total joke. . ."can I steal your husband?" But then I thought better of it and thought to say, "does he have a brother?" LOL

I couldn't agree with his sentiments more about Obama presenting himself at this juncture in time.

I especially loved this line ". . .I have faith that America will elect this man, who fits no previous mold, and who represents the mosaic collective of us all. In so doing, the world will see that we are who we say we are. . . "

Never in this lifetime have I seen a candidate who speaks more from the heart than he.

Consider visualizing him taking his oath of office on the Capital steps next January. I'm doing so relentlessly.

Michelle by his side, keeps coming to me spontaneously for the last few weeks.

I infuse that image with every ounce of power I've got.

Picture Barrack's family in the White House, his daughters laughing, running through the corridors, Obama in the Oval Office, folks. Make it come true. The whole world demands this of you.

These are exactly my thoughts. I take nothing away from the struggle women have had but since we find ourselves with two potentially historical glass ceilings being broken I have to think that it's more important in this election to choose the racial one and not the gender one. As your hubby said, we need to show the world we are who we say we are.

121. yeah, but...
no one here is claiming that Obama was "chosen by God". If you've found anyone that actually believes that, i'd be surprised. (an actual quote, not your interpretation of someone else's words, would be an appropriate way of refuting my statement... in other words, please don't say, "all Obamabots do it!" or "i've seen it before")

How would you know what you would be like "if you were religious" if you're not?

Honestly, and i truly do not mean any disrespect here, do you have a problem with all religion?

btw, i'm an Obama supporter, but i do like Hillary and would vote for her in the GE (i wouldn't even need to hold my nose, since i don't think she stinks... she's just not my favorite)

126. Can you provide a non-metaphysical explanation for ...
""... God, Fate, Destiny or Providence.." - my feelings exactly,"

Yes, I do have a problem with all religion that assumes limitations on our free will and/or divine intervention in our affairs. ESPECIALLY political affairs.

These conversations of mystic origins of our politicians bring me as close as possible to a religious experience. Only then can I understand the appeal of flagellation and mortification of the flesh. When I read my fellow democrats going all soft in the head I want to gouge out some sensory organs.

Obama appears to be a skilled politician, and a conscientious public servant. If his healthcare policy were adequate, this would be enough for me.

You guys are creeping me out.

The focus was on America, not on how much Obama has claimed he "cares about the Palestinians"
And please link up to some proof that Obama does not care about that middle east conflict? A conflict if resolved would help stabilize the region and help make US troops and all Americans a little safer. Why wouldn't any president care about that? You're really grasping at straws.

Edited on Mon Mar-31-08 04:59 PM by dbmk
You are wrong. Immensely wrong. Most people I talk to here all recognize what a historical significance it will be if Hillary is elected. But female heads of state is not exactly a rare thing, uncommon but not rare, in these parts, so she is first and foremost seen as a politician. And not exactly as an unusual one, at that. With all that carries of connotations.

Obama on the other hand. To the rest of the world, that is the breaking of a glass ceiling that will be heard and seen as more significant than you can imagine.

Add to that the fact that the guy seems to be smart, deliberate, even tempered, has a good sense of right and wrong and the ability to deliver the message.

He will be loved. Instantly.
And the opinion of the US and the way the US is thought of in the world will change drastically as a result.

EDIT: I think that Frenchies husband knows that that fact alone is not enough to qualify him for the office. So do I. But I have no doubt, and neither does he, I suspect - along with a significant part of the US population apparently, that Obama has what it takes to act as your president in all the capacities required - on top of that.

106. This is what Bill Maher's panel talked about last Friday:
People thinking everything will be magically turned all right once Obama becomes president. These same people ignore that Obama is a regular status quo candidate who doesn't want to change anything fundamentally about the USA. It will be a few cosmetic changes, and all of you will believe all problems are solved and you will go back to sleep again.

155. Crystal ball? Tarot? Tea leaves? Where does this vision come from?
I, as one Obama supporter, do not believe it will be magic. I'll take Obama at his word, that it will still be a lot of work and that one candidate won't make all the changes we need. It's up to us as a people to work together. And the great thing about Obama is that he has the capacity to inspire people, to give people hope. In this respect he goes way beyond status quo. Obviously not everyone feels the same way, but there sure are a lot of people who do.

And sleep? The wretched pain in my heart I've felt over the last eight years makes me want to raise a large middle finger toward that comment of yours. It's not over, come the next election. Ground swell, grass roots...baby, it's happening and there are a lot of other people like me who are pissed about the status quo. Democrats aren't like sheeple Republicans. We'll push back on our own if they start to get too cozy in DC.

164. Democrats are as much sheeple as Republicans. Most people are.
Obama can inspire people and give them hope, but where is all that based on? Sppeches, charisma and a lot of hot air. Just look at his voting record and his platform: the fundamental structures in America (the justice system, the military-industrial complex, the health care system, the distribution of wealth) will not change one tiny bit.

Obama hasn't even vowed to reverse horrible legislation like the Patriot Act. But then again, he voted for that, too. What can be expected from such a candidate? The people are getting tricked into a corporate candidate once again.

125. More ice cream on the destiny cake
The words in your post are felt by pretty much all of us. Yet there is one more, very important characteristic of Obama and that's his expertise knowledge of the U.S. Constitution.

I don't have to even give reasons why that is important to all of us either.

We all know that the Bush* administration, and each Congressional Session from (at least) the 103rd to the present has compromised, abused, maligned and a whole host of other adjectives the Constitution. Their decisions or lack thereof imperils each and every one of us. I trust Obama to begin its desperately needed restoration.

Call it destiny. Yup.

FrenchieCat. Thank you for sharing your husband's words here, made for a nice read!

Would be ok with my linking this thread to the interracial, multi-ethnic support forum? (forum link): http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=289

Let me know, it's not a very busy forum, but I think some of the members that read and post there would enjoy your op and the thread. :hi:

best,
bliss :)

141. Is my husband right?
I asked my husband the same thing. Here is what he replied:

Although I believe Obama is intelligent and charismatic and would be a great leader, I don't think the majority of white Americans would allow a black, even a half black man to be their president. They'd rather vote for an old washed up senile guy who is white over a black man. Those are the facts. And the Republicans have been registering as Democrats voting for Obama in the primaries and flooding the caucuses voting for Obama because they believe he'll be easier for McCain to beat in the general election.

So, what do you all think? Is he even partially right?

I am very worried that Americans will vote with their inner Archie Bunker.

He's going to have to rely on vigorous politicking - not predestination.

145. "Whether he is here due to God or...."
Whether he is here due to God or fate or destiny or providence, this man presents himself at this time for a reason.

Uh-oh. That's just what the current occupant thinks. That ought to set off some alarms.

As long as BHO does not think this of himself, we should be OK.

156. It's one thing to feel it's your time, it's another to say God talks to you
I've never gotten the impression from Obama that he feels some sort of divine right to the throne. He seems more than willing to work for the office of President. Listen to his speeches and read his position papers, then make your own judgment call.
