pun·ish (pnsh)
v. pun·ished, pun·ish·ing, pun·ish·es
v.tr.
1. To subject to a penalty for an offense, sin, or fault.
2. To inflict a penalty for (an offense).
3. To handle roughly; hurt: My boots were punished by our long trek through the desert.

v.intr. To exact or mete out punishment.

I was punished with a spanking.

Did the spanking punish me or the person who spanked me?

Well, the spanking was USED to punish me, but the person who spanked me was clearly the one punishing me. Spankings can't reason or judge, therefore they cannot punish.

I was punished with a baby.

Same thing. Did the child punish me or the person(s) who took away my access to a safe, legal abortion (and/or my access to sex education)? Babies also can't reason or judge, therefore they also cannot punish. But, if they could, that would be indicated by saying, "I was punished BY a baby".

Is denial of abortion access and sex education used to punish women perceived as sexually "loose"? Is this part of the so-called "Pro-life" movement?

That is the only thing subject to debate here.

And for all of you DU perverts who checked this thread out because I said "spanking"... :P

1. Good post!
This here:

The answer to me is YES, just as AIDs and HPV are considered punishment for undesirable behavior...This cuts to the heart for of the problem with conservative policy I wrote about earlier today here:

Reverting to punishment, a desperate measure, as a first resort.

4. Good post!
And on that note, I must say I was flabbergasted on Saturday, when pulling out of an antique shop parking lot, I saw-must've been at least 50! bumperstickers obviously not just on the bumper, about Pro-Life! It just blew me away that someone would be so outwardly radical, so incredibly public about their religious beliefs, which I thought were usually seen as personal. It was...over the top!

Fundie freaks are the most frightening people in the world, IMO. So, so unstable.

Critical thinking comes in handy....to make a point.

It's unfortunate that you had to use critical thinking to explain a statement that could have been understood, using common sense, if one had looked at the context into which it was made.

:)

20. Thanks!
Critical thinking does seem to be in short supply around here these days, doesn't it?

It's as if people don't even try any more. If it's beneficial to their chosen candidate or harmful to the *other* candidate, then it MUST be true.

It's crazy and certainly beneath Democrats, or so I thought.

15. Its all a game of perception.
It doesn't matter what he really meant, it will be spun into the GOP narrative by the complicit media.

16. Is it fair to compare a noun to a verb here, though?
"I don't want you punished with a car." I'm making a statement about cars in general, not the manufacturing process, the car itself.

Obviously it's possible to discern what he meant, but what he said was distinct from what he really meant, and it can be easily spun that way.

Don't act as if his language was perfect here, though, he slipped up.

17. just by him mentioning his
daughters in the same sentence, one could understand what he meant.

Don't act as if people didn't spin what he said into talking about all women.

He was talking about his daughters.
