Dr. Maya Angelou....
Wrote "And Still I Rise" in 1978,
after she lived in AFrica for years,
and while she was living in California.
Her life story is remarkable,
her vision and her expression is incredible.

The poem was not written for Hillary Rodham Clinton
but for the experience of the AFrican American Woman.
It was written and copyrighted in 1978.

Hillary Clinton was not the first lady of ARkansas
until 1979.

The poem may have been quoted about Hillary's tenacity,
and I know that Dr. Angelou supports Hillary's campaign
and I may be 'silly' as some of you have said...
(I read your posts),because I am a greater fan and
devotee of Dr. Angelou than I am of Hillary Clinton.

But until Dr. Angelou herself says so,
That she wrote it for Hillary before
she knew her...
I will continue to believe the poem was written for
AFrican American Women.
And yes, they will continue to rise...

Sorry.

3. Surprisingly, quite a few claimed this
There mistake is that Maya wrote a different poem for Hillary called, Rise Hillary Rise. Since they knew nothing of Maya Angelou prior to her endorsement that assumed that the original poem was written for Hillary.

It's quite funny.

Do a search to last Monday night, there were posters saying "And Still I Rise" was for Hillary. It isn't. "Rise, Hillary, Rise" is for Hillary. They are two different poems, and some posters were posting the wrong one saying it was for Hillary.

As has been explained over and over again There are two similar poems. But I believe you know that already. One was written in the 70's and the other was written a couple months ago for Hillary, based upon the first poem.

I doubt this will do anything to cease your orgasmic shit-stirring, but I will post it again anyway.

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

This is not the first time you have seen Hillary Clinton seemingly at her wits' end, but she has always risen, always risen,
don't forget she has always risen,
much to the dismay of her adversaries and the delight of her friends.

Hillary Clinton will not give up on you and all she asks of you is that
you do not give up on her. There is a world of difference between being
a woman and being an old female. If you're born a girl, grow up,
and live long enough, you can become an old female.

But to become a woman is a serious matter. A woman takes responsibility
for the time she takes up and the space she occupies.
Hillary Clinton is a woman. She has been there and done that and has still risen. She is in this race for the long haul. She intends to make a difference in our country.

Hillary Clinton intends to help our country to be what it can become.
She declares she wants to see more smiles in the family, more courtesies between men and women, more honesty in the marketplace. She is the prayer of every woman and man who longs for fair play, healthy families, good schools, and a balanced economy.

She means to rise.

Don't give up on Hillary. In fact, if you help her to rise, you will
rise with her and help her make this country the wonderful, wonderful
place where every man and every woman can live freely without sanctimonious
piety and without crippling fear.

Rise, Hillary. Rise.

______________

Now.... kindly STFU.

About this article

This article appeared in the Observer on Sunday January 20 2008 on p3 of the News section. It was last updated at 01:49 on January 20 2008.
Maya Angelou, the African-American poet who is one of the most influential and respected literary voices of the modern age, has written a poem praising Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign for The Observer.

………..

The 79-year-old poet was the centrepiece of Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993 when she read her poem On the Pulse of Morning, playing on the idea of a new political dawn. Last week she handed this new poem over to the Clinton campaign.

………
'When he had his brush with Ms Lewinsky, the whole world was looking under Mrs Clinton's bedclothes. Many people expected her to fall or to become as hard as a rock,' she has said. 'She did neither. I love that about her. She didn't pretend she wasn't hurt and she didn't become a virago.'

………..
It is not known how long Angelou spent writing the poem, but in the weeks leading up to President Bill Clinton's first inauguration she is said to have begun work at 5.30 every morning, equipped with a glass of sherry, a dictionary, Roget's Thesaurus and the Bible.

Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in 1928 in St Louis, Missouri, and lived with her mother until she was raped by her mother's boyfriend. In England she became famous in the early Seventies with the first of her volumes of autobiography.

……….
State Package for Hillary Clinton

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may tread me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I'll rise…….

Here's the opening stanza of the poem reference in the OP

You may write me down in history
    With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

and the opening stanza in the one you quote:

You may write me down in history
    With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Now, the rest of the original bears no resemblance to the rest of the homage to Hillary. But, it would have been honest of you to at least admit that the opening lines were identical.

====================

upon editing: My support for Obama in no way interferes with my endless admiration of Maya Angelou. I sat four rows back in a live performance of hers (in which she delivered the original poem in question), and I'd see her again in a heartbeat.

35. Yes and I have heard this like a million times, it is old news
like a lot of these stories.. There was a poem very similar and that is the referenced poem but someone always grabs this one and post yet another post... Just like I am tired of seeing post about Obama say he is punishing, those are ridiculous too... Honestly doesn't there come a point where we are beating a dead horse with all these posts?

70. Hi Dogday
I surf DU early in the morning,
go to work,
and check in at night.

About the poem...
and I believe this was in my post
the orginal was written 1979
about the AFrican American woman experience.

A later derivative version was
dedicated to HIllary.

I believe that's the truth.

67. Apparently, Sir Elton is giving a Hillary benefit concert in NYC soon. Perhaps then...
Vote for Hillary Diane
Though I never knew her at all
She has the grace to hold herself
While all her staffers crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into her brain
They set her on the treadmill
And they made her change her name

And it seems to me she lives life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing which ideology to cling to
When the primaries set in
And I would have liked to have known her
But I was just a kid
Her chances for nomination flickered out long before
The legend ever did

Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
The White House made her a superstar
And pain was the price she paid
'Specially when Bill lied
Oh the press still hounds her
All the papers had to say
Was that Hillary stood behind her dude

Goodbye Hillary Diane
From the young man in the 22nd row
Who sees you as something as more than sexual
More than just our First Lady
