Dean commits to seat Florida delegates
Democratic party chief Howard Dean this morning stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Florida's Democratic congressional delegation and said Florida will have a delegation at this summer's presidential nominating convention.

"We are committed to do everything in our power to seat the Florida delegation," Dean said on the steps of the Democratic National Committee, where he met with Florida's nine House Democrats, Sen. Bill Nelson and state party chairwoman Karen Thurman. It was a marked change of tone for Dean, who has repeatedly said Florida would not have a delegation based on its Jan. 29 vote because it broke the rules in having that primary too early.

The details of how to seat the Florida delegation still must be worked out with the campaigns of Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama. but, he said, "we are confident enough we have reserved hotel rooms," for Florida. Previously, the DNC had said there were no coveted hotel rooms in Denver reserved for Florida.

2. Good, I'm sure a fair compromise will be worked out that works for Clinton and Obama.

3. They will only be seated once it becomes clear they won't effect the outcome
Edited on Wed Apr-02-08 10:54 AM by TAWS
To seat them and have them overturn the outcome would lead the party into chaos.

4. Maribelle this could be good news or it may not be good news
Since this has been an issue on TV and newspapers in Florida almost every day and the average voter is aware of this problem it depends on how Dean seats the delegates compared to the jan 29th primary. Hillary has a lot of support in Florida and raised a ton of money, much more then any other candidate. These folks will be keeping up with what Dean decides to do. I live in Florida so I've been paying close attention to the issues.

6. I live in South Florida too.
The average voter isn't aware of the issue. I work for a large company with VERY bright people. I'm amazed still at the number of people who have no idea/don't care about this.

11. Look at today's poll showing Obama pulling only 37% against McCain in Florida
FLORIDA: Clinton 44 - McCain 42; McCain 46 - Obama 37

Most Floridians I know not only care - but are really livid.

8. Well, it is a breakthrough for the delegation to get Dean's commitment.
However, I think Dean is beginning to realize how deep a hole he has dug over this.

For instance, just today in the New York Times, they blasted Dean saying:
it is not clear that Mr. Dean has the political skills or the stature with the two campaigns to bring the nominating battle to a relatively quick and unifying conclusion.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/02/us/politics/02dems.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&ref=politics&adxnnlx=1207152036-0j4KJ30XC61e2blWz83CwA

And there is a new poll out today showing Hillary beating McCain in Florida, and Obama losing badly to McCain.

Hopefully, they will do the right thing for millions of innocent Floridians.

5. Here are his words from last night on CNN...seat but not like the others.
"DEAN: I would very much like to have Florida and Michigan seated. Because of the circumstances under which they held their elections, essentially which were not valid elections, they aren't going to be seated the same way that everybody else is.

They can be seated in one of two ways. One, they can be seated by agreement between the two campaigns if there is no clear winner, or, two, they will be seated I suspect by whoever does win the nomination. Whoever wins the nomination will control the credentials committee, which will control the seating. And I strongly believe our nominee is going to want Florida and Michigan in the hall. Under which rules, that will depend. The nominee will set the rules."

20. Get out of the fantasy. They are not going to be seated as is.
More than likely it will be 50/50

Allowing Clinton to pick up delegates from a flawed election just to seat FL will cause chaos and gain the chances of a republican in the white house again.

7. Of course. The delegation will probably be split 50/50 between each candidate.
Edited on Wed Apr-02-08 11:05 AM by kwenu
There's little chance that it will be seated based on the election unless Obama specifically consents to it. That might happen after the SDs cut for Obama and he becomes the presumptive nominee.

24. From the article:
Dean did not say whether all of Florida's delegates will end up being seated or some portion of them.

Those details of how to seat the Florida delegation still must be worked out with the campaigns of Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.

---------------------

I don't think Dean has said anymore than he already said. If anyone thinks that they'll be seated according to the Jan. 29 primary, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell.
