Kerry: "It was McCain's operatives who approached us first (re:VP spot in 2004)"
just now on CNN. I haven't heard Kerry come out and reaffirm this in a very public forum.

Hopefully - this will be used a LOT in the general election. This really bugs the Repubs a LOT. It will be a great weapon to use.

1. I know it bugs the hell out of McDubya.
Reporters should ask him alot of questions about this, every chance they get. We could get to see that famous temper again.

2. Wonder how this would play out, if true
My thinking is that it might actually help McCain now that he has the GOP nomination sewn up. Especially since Democrats are more likely to believe Kerry's version of the story while Republicans might be more inclined to believe McCain's.

17. Or it could really alienate the core Republican base
who never did quite believe McCain was conservative enough. It could drive down Republican voter turnout.

4. Are you saying what I think you're saying? That McCain approached Kerry and asked for the VP slot?
OMG. That is PRICELESS.

22. Kerry did not offer the spot. McCain asked for it.
This is not the first time Kerry said that. This has been out for at least 3 years. McCain does not like hearing that.

8. And if McCain switched parties to become a Dem, it probably would've happened.
Now McCain is STUCK carrying far right water he thought at one point he could escape.

I have heard McCain's sons hate Bush and most of the Republican party.

14. I forgot about that, too. McCain's son spent alot of time in NY and LA and pretty much
everyone would get earfuls of his loathing for BushInc.

I have to wonder if Bushies got pics of McCain with that lobbyist and dangle it every now and then to keep him in line?

19. And how exactly does that work to the Dem's advantage?
McCain's strategy is to attempt to appear moderate and distance himself from Bush.

Hard to believe that people still watch CNN -and watch it without realizing that they're being propagandized.

21. McCain can't win without the hardcore conservative nutbags who already dislike him.
This will not play well with them to think that McCain approached Kerry instead of the other way around.

25. Yet he managed to win in the primaries... where the fundies have more weight
I guess I don't see the fundies flocking to Obama, even though he's pandered to them, and unlike Democrats, I don't see enough hardcore Republicans staying home or crossing over to make much difference -on the national level.

On the other hand, I do see a lot of fence sitters IRL who would might find "see, I am for change -I considered running against Bush" to be persuasive.

A difference of opinion, I guess as to what they'd likely do.

26. Because they split between Huckabee and Romney
and thompson and Guiliani. McCain won largely because nobody else managed to put a coalition together among the GOP.

28. Those millions of new voters aren't registering for McCain. They're registering for Obama.
And the moderates haven't seen the billion dollars worth of ads of Bush and McCain playing kissy face for months.

And I will also wager that Bush will pull the same move Clinton pulled in 2000 and make the convention a celebration of him.

23. Do you think McCain can win without getting the entire GOP base?
The new registrations are Obama's votes. No one depends more on the old base voters than McCain.

24. Where will the base go? To Obama?
Maybe a few, but the more probable result will be that, given his "experience" that we'd see a much larger move in the other direction among so called "moderates."

Anything that places McCain in less than an extremist light (and tars and feathers him with Bush's failed policies) is a detriment to the fall campaign. If the Dems fail to do that, barring a total meltdown of his campaign, we lose. Maybe big.

27. I doubt it. McCain WILL get tarred as BushII - but the far right BASE won't believe it.
Edited on Thu Apr-03-08 06:18 PM by blm
This is hardly the last word about McCain. He hasn't even HAD the 1 billion dollar worth of attacks on him, yet - attacks that he and Bush have provided plenty of the film footage.

But, the FAR right when it digs in against a GOP it usually stays dug in and won't be energized to vote for McCain let alone work for him.

McCain cooked his goose during 2004 with all of those photo ops and beyond that during Katrina and the debate on Iraq withdrawal. The ads just haven't been made yet. He won't be ABLE to extricate himself from Bush to fool the moderates for long.
