Barack Obama's campaign, still struggling to gain its footing in the wake of the Wright controversy, found itself again in damage-control mode Thursday, as a new scandal involving a radical mideastern preacher named YESHUA BIN YUSEF threatens a backlash insiders fear may dwarf anything his campaign has yet faced.

Although there is not yet evidence suggesting Obama has personally attended any of bin Yusef's hate-filled sermons, a series of politically embarrassing quotes have been discovered in which Obama appears to be professing respect--and even admiration--for the radical cleric.

"I believe in the example that he set," Obama said as recently as January 2008, of the cleric who once said, "And will the infidel nation be blessed by God as she claims? No! She will be damned into hell!"

A RECORD OF INCENDIARY SPEECH

Perhaps most controversially, bin Yusef has in past explicitly backed fundamentalist terrorism. In written transcripts of a recent sermon, bin Yusef claims, "I hope to see the earth set on fire, and I wish it were already burning! The world must be rebaptized, and I will not rest until it is accomplished. Do you think I believe in peace? No, I tell you! Not peace, but division!"

So to those of us who care about such things, the distinction is clear that Palestinian is indeed accurate.

There is a problem inherent with laying claim to land based on the historicity of occupation. The Israelites did not enter into a vacant territory. Can we return the land to the Canaanites? Today's Palestinians did not take land away from the ancient Israelites. That had already been done by a succession of Empires for thousands of years. To which Empire should it revert? Does it make any sense to give it to the Italians because they ruled it 2,000 years ago? I would gather no one would argue that point. It also sounds ridiculous to give it to Greece, Syria, Iraq or Iran because the Macedonians, Assyrians, Babylonians and Persians once conquered the territory. To people who are less sensitive to the passion associated with this land, handing it over to the Jewish people because they had a kingdom there once upon a time makes about as much sense.

Very complicated issue that I dearly hope will someday be resolved in a manner that will satisfy all the parties' needs.

THe claims of the Caananite are preceded by the peaceful purchase of Land by Abraham, his son Isaac, his son Jacob and Jacob's sone before they were enslaved for 400 years in Egypy. If one chooses to take the narraative as an accurate account of the history (something that is certainly debatable) Does Slavery or Captivity or the Sacing of Jerusalem abrogate those ancestral rights?

I suppose we can ask African Americans about their 40 acres and a mule. Or the few unassimilated native americans about what had been promised to them. But we should ask the Jews who wandered homeless for nearly two millenia since 70 AD and suffered untold butchery at the hands of the spaniards and the russians before the nifty solutions the germans came up with....if they merit some consideration, given what they have endured, are owed some sense of apology and reparation for what has occured.

That does not mean Palestinian rights should be ignored, but it begins I think with a Palestinian acknowlegment that the nation of Israel (as opposed to the state) has a right to exist, that the Holocaust did in fact occur, and that there is a claim to at least some land in dispute. If Palestine needs to be compensated for those lands I think that would be fine.

It is my perception that the symbolic gesture of giving up of the lands on the east of the Jordan as a means of trying to resolve this matter is essential. From there Israel is going to have to give up the territories including the Golan in exchange for a peace accord with Palestine and Syria and Hamas laying down their arms.

That leaves the major issue of Jerusalem Final status. It will have to become a protectorate for 100 years while moderate Arab states bankroll a Marahall plan for the Palestinan areas. There has to be a means by which moderate sympathies take root as normative. THat is education and it is Jobs and it is water and infrastructure.

All well and good for academic discussions and to make a point from a different perspective, but not exactly conducive to fulfilling needs that include religious sensibilities.

No denying that religion does complicate matters considerably. As you state, the historical accuracy of the account of Abraham is debatable but if such an individual is a metaphor, compilation or legitimizing myth that still does not alter the sacredness of the landscape one bit.

Myth, as a means of making sense of ourselves and our orientation to life, is difficult to internalize if it is not the myth you find operative. Therefore, I can sympathize with the point of view of someone who does not accept the historical accuracy of Genesis and therefore uses it to dismiss contemporary Jewish claims to the land as untenable.

Both perspectives are valid yet conflict. Life abounds with such paradox.

I had high hopes when John Conyers held his hearings on bias in the media, since this is another man who "gets it," but he was forced to hold his meetings in the basement and only the "liberals" showed up...;(

CNN has become pretty much unwatchable, but there are still a few informative shows on MSNBC, notably Keith Olbermann, especially when Rachel Maddow's on, and, of course, Air America on the radio. I also enjoy Jon Stewart and Letterman really does seem to get it... Notice how few of these are actual news shows, though... *sigh*

I think that the key is to watch with a discerning eye, so you can spot the lies. It gives me great pleasure when somebody gets called on telling less than the truth, like the time that Cheney said "I've never heard that before!" after somebody in the crowd shouted "Go f*** yourself!" and Jack Cafferty said that of course he had! LOL!:applause:

But you're absolutely right, most people aren't informed and just swallow what they see and hear whole, like my mother who watches FIXED News and takes it for actual news or truth. There are, unfortunately, way too many like that, these days... *sigh* :-(

And, yes, the MSM has become a parody of itself, like Bush*, himself. I've often said that there's no need for comic presidential impersonators now, since Bush* is funnier than they could possibly be, all by himself, and I felt that way even before Letterman came up with his "Great Moments in Presidential Speeches," my favorite part of the show... :evilfrown:

At least Dennis and John Edwards haven't dropped off the face of the earth and may have some influence on our next president. Martin Luther King III was on one of the news shows this morning and said that one of his father's greatest causes was "the war on poverty" and that he'd already communicated with the remaining candidates about it and that both Obama and Hillary had signed on to create a cabinet position for this... (which, of course, is John Edwards signature issue). Lets keep our fingers crossed...:-)

everyday as well. Sadly he has Paggets disease (incurable bone marrow disease) and continues to vote against his own best interest. Time and time again I've told him that when it comes to important issues terrorism shouldn't be on the top of his list yet stem cell research may help him live longer, but he continues to watch that crap. It leaves me dumbfounded and puts a strain on our relationship as we can't talk politics without him screaming. It's a sad statement on how hard our job is on the left.

My mother watches FIXED News on a regular basis, O'Reilly, Hannity and listens to Rush Limbaugh. She gives me a hard time because I don't watch the "news," as she calls this crap. And she also screams at me, saying that my father would be "ashamed" of me, since I turned out to be a liberal Democrat, since he was also a Republican. *sigh*

But I do know that my father would never be ashamed of me, never was, and I could discuss this stuff with him. He may have mostly voted Republican and was active in local politics, but everybody's Republican in my neck-of-the-woods, and he had good friends of every stripe, was not in the least partisan, unlike my mother. But I lost him in 1990, all too young, to cancer. ;(

Is it possible to send your father articles on stem cell research, and the promise that it holds for curing illness? The thing that drives me crazy about my mother is that she really doesn't hold the same beliefs as Bush*. Yes, she goes to church, but the similarity ends there. She is not a Fundie, goes nuts with recycling, etc., cares about the environment, is pro-choice, has nothing against gay people or black people and is the daughter of immigrants. So I've asked her how she could possibly support George Bush*, but she still voted for him twice. I asked her, early on, who she liked of the current candidates, and she said Obama, LOL, but I'll bet you anything that she'll vote for John McCain, just because he's the Republican nominee... :-(

Senator Obama's speech on MLK's spiritual and political legacy with its many
biblical references.

(nitpick) In defence of your fact sheet against some critical comments: Yehoshua's
existence, his preaching across ancient Palestine (a Roman pars pro toto term
derived from Philistaea, land of the Philistines) and the execution due to
actions seen as seditious by the Sadducee priest-nobles and the Roman governor
are about the only things generally accepted even by historians rejecting
the gospels as sources due to excessive mythological content. This is mainly,
because these points are also mentioned in historical works by Tacitus and
Flavius Josephus.
Of course there are people insinuating a big conspiracy both coordinating the
writing of the gospels and epistles and annotating copies of hellenistic
historians, but the overall sourcing quality is about as good as e.g. on the
existence of Hannibal, who of course *might* have been an invention of Roman
nationalists to scare later generations of Romans from neglecting readiness
and willingness for war, but just very, very likely is not. (/nitpick)
