Independent Gov. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. has endorsed Barack Obama
Former GOP senator Weicker endorses Obama

April 4, 2008
HARTFORD, Conn. - Former Republican senator and Connecticut independent Gov. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. has endorsed Barack Obama for president.

Weicker says the Illinois Democrat "has the smarts, quite frankly, to do a damn good job."

Weicker, a GOP senator from 1971 to 1989, was elected governor in 1990 as an independent and served one term.

The 76-year-old Weicker says Democratic contender Hillary Rodham Clinton is "very capable," but that he wants what he calls "new thinking" in the country.

Backing Republican John McCain was never a consideration, he said Friday, because of Weicker’s strong opposition to the war in Iraq.

1. There's only, like, half a dozen Republicans, ever, worth a damn.
Lowell Weicker's one of them.

He finally went Independent, as he towers over 99.9% of all other Republicans. He towers ethically, intellectually, and physically over them. He's a tall guy in a lot of respects. Also he refreshingly endorsed Lamont over Lieberman in 2006 in CT.

Chuck Colson tried to win Weicker over on the Watergate Senate Committee as a pal of Nixon for a sure vote. Weicker is said to have told Colson to kiss his ass and get the hell out of his office.

He's a good man. He's made another smart endorsement.

3. Lowell Weicker- A watergate hero
President Reagan referred to him in his diaries as "a pompous, no good, fathead" after Weicker played a key role in the Senate's defeat of Reagan's proposed constitutional amendment to permit organized spoken prayer in public schools.

5. Yes. "Hero" is a good word for Weicker. He held the fort for people no
matter their political alignment.

Hiya, Ichingcarpenter. Good to run into you this morning.

8. It never fails to amaze me that, while I'm sitting here typing something to post, someone else is
sitting at their computer, wherever they are, and typing the same thing - only FASTER.

Duh.

10. You have the considered velocity of the well-considered observer, of the bohemian
analysis. But then talented poets might be expected to have those gifts, it's just that it's refreshing for the rest of us to run into y'all on DU's political boards.

4. During the Watergate investigation, Lowell Weicker was a hero to me. He was one of the first
to criticize the underhandedness of the Nixon WH and he was fearless about pursuing the matter to its conclusion.

As such, I have a great deal of respect for him and am happy that he's chosen to support Obama.
