Hillary Clinton in Eugene, Oregon
Edited on Sun Apr-06-08 10:54 AM by sniffa
COVERED THE HILLARY CLINTON campaign stop in Eugene yesterday, at the South Eugene High School. While there was a smattering across a few demographics (there were young people, too), it seemed to my eye to be mostly white women, and older people. (You can't judge by who is behind HRC in the monitor; these people are picked purposely, and often for the very traits I discuss now: sex, age, skin color, and "ethnic" appearance.) However, I did no formal tally, and when the video is made, you can make a judgment for yourself on that aspect.

The truth is, Clinton did her best (even pushing through a tired and "froggy" sounding voice), and her supporters cheered their loudest, and I appreciate her (and their) spirit and ambition and Clinton's manner of laying out her platform. But it was inarguably not a good day for Clinton. She was late, she made everyone wait in the rain longer than we were supposed to, and then inside we waited longer than scheduled. She was heckled about her vote authorizing the Iraq invasion and No Child Left Behind, and about two out of five (I have to check my tape to be sure) questions came to her from Obama supporters. Not to mention the press pass was a cheap xerox instead of a printed and designed document (campaign budget), the gymnasium could have fit, along with nine others the same size (rough guess, probably on the low side, actually) in the venue Obama spoke in when he was here March 21 of this year. I can't help but compare, and I guess in a race like this, that's the point.

It felt a bit sad to me. I can't even count how many times speakers tried to get everyone to cheer louder or longer. At one point, this anchorwoman (in the foto to the right) was telling her cameraman about speaking purposely fast and breathless to give the feeling that the energy in the room was very high. I overheard it, and tried to catch some with the shotgun mic attached to my sound recorder, but pointing one of those at someone (especially a media person) has the result of them quieting down a lot. By the time I had it on and pointed, she was whispering. But truthfully, there was this sort of effort in a few places. Ted Kulongowski, Oregon's governor (who introduced Clinton) seemed absolutely possessed, bobbing and stooping and dancing around trying to rouse the crowd, trying to pass on his frenzy. It was almost as if the campaign/event was competing with the ghost of Obama's recent appearance, which had raised the rafters and blew out the town with buzz.

You will see very plainly from the videotape that many of the people behind Clinton (even though handpicked by the campaign) were definitely not excited, and in fact often looked very bored, didn't clap when they were supposed to, or made tired, perfunctory "golf claps" on the applause lines. I honestly felt embarrassed for the Senator more than once.

...................

Finally, Clinton is still telling the "woman-turned'away-and-died" hospital story that she has been told is not true, and has been asked not to by Rick Castrop, chief executive officer of the O'Bleness Health System in Athens, Ohio. Get the facts of the story here.

19. Nor in New Orleans
John Edwards and Barack Obama are popular here.

Obama took Louisiana. He got 23 delegates, and Clinton got 15:

Obama 57% +21% Margin
Clinton 36%

In New Orleans, Obama won with 74% (Hillary 24%; 1% for Biden and Edwards each).

I doubt she'd get 10% support now.

18. I'm fairly familiar with Eugene.
I have serious doubts she'd find much support there ... except perhaps in outlying areas. She's just not a "Merry Prankster" attractor. It's a town almost made to order for Obama, though. The "Animal House" legacy was alive and well when I frequently visited.
:silly:

35. Yep. UofO is the heartbeat of a liberal attitude there.
Edited on Sun Apr-06-08 06:30 PM by TahitiNut
The merchants and citizens of Eugene are exceptionally liberal and multicultural. Springfield (the neighboring town) is somewhat less so. The surrounding rural and country areas are mixed. Eastern Oregon is conservative, but not really "neo." Portland is also quite liberal. Climate-wise, it's a 3-season area with both lots of rain and a fair amount of sunshine. The Willamette Valley and I-5 corridor is quite agricultural, but there's timber and mountains and whitewater all along there, too. Oregon is really quite beautiful and varied. It's Western New York without much snow. I get the impression you really would like Eugene ... and the people. I know I do ... and it's one of the places I'd live happily.

Clinton thrills Eugene audience

The speech packed the school’s gymnasium to the rafters, and though the crowd’s energy waned a bit as Clinton arrived more than an hour late after being delayed at an earlier stop in Hillsboro, she took the stage to enthusiastic roars.

Waving signs that read “Keep on fighting Hillary,” and “Vote Hillary, make history,” the capacity crowd responded to her promise to be a representative of the middle class.

“That’s what I love about her, is that she works for the people,” said Oakridge resident Sharon Camron, 57, just after she shook Clinton’s hand. “Wow, I can’t believe it. I just feel that we’re so honored to have her here — she is the most empowering woman.”

Some of the loudest responses came with Clinton’s calls for universal health care and education reform.

8. I think she's wasting her time in Oregon
Bill followed Obama by a week in southern Oregon and spoke to 500 empty seats in a venue the same size that Obama filled to capacity. For the Obama town hall many were left standing outside. There was nothing phony about the electricity at the Obama event. Two weeks later I'm still feeling it.

10. This isn't the first article I've seen comparing their events
Edited on Sun Apr-06-08 11:34 AM by sniffa
I remember the Sunday before NH, reading about how she held a rally in the same venue as Obama just did the day before, and she was several thousand people shy of his total... so they had to make some arrangements to make the room look smaller, and fuller. They also manufactured a long line outside.
I remember watching it live, and commenting that, "That's odd. Why does she keep making a big deal every time someone enters the room, and insisting that there's room for them." The article confirmed my gut feeling that her rally must not be that big.

15. I was in line
I tried to get in, but I'm just getting over a cold/flu thing and the bad weather drove me away when the wind came up.
There were lots of young people, plenty of men, and much excitment. I wish I'd been able to hold out.
Tried to get in for Obama a couple of weeks back and that was far larger, but also an on campus event at the U of O with a built in walking distance crowd. Tons of people, I was too far back and gave up, should have stayed as he spoke to overflow crowd on an outside feild as well. Better weather that night, by far.

I am pretty sure Obama will take Oregon. But this is my first Primary here, so what do I know?

I'd like to say that both events were not well run, and I'm not sure what is up with the way these campaign events are produced, I think they could do way better, both of ours and probably the whole 'industry' of campaigns. I think they do it all wrong, and need to rethink. They waste too much and reach too few the way they do it. They don't get value for the dollar, seriously, and more importantly in many ways, they waste the candidate's precious energies foolishly without maximizing the return. And it is almost too ironic to hear them speak of 'green collar jobs' the way they run these road shows. And one thing they seem to forget is that at an event where the energy of the audience is perhaps more important than the candidate's own level, it is important to not exhaust them before the big moment. The youth of Obama's crowds helps to mitigate that, but even with them, no multi hour line wait makes for a more lively crowd, and thus a better show for CNN et al....

I can't find anything on him working for her since.

I did watch the start of the Eugene rally, It was too painful to watch and turned it off.
