1. I can't count the number of times
I've been called "sweetie" or "honey" or "hon" by a female store clerk, who I didn't know at all, in my life.

In fact I stop for a paper every morning and the same clerk is usually there and she calls everybody "hon" male and female alike.

10. Recently a gas station clerk called me sweety.
Edited on Sun Apr-06-08 01:16 PM by lizzy
I looked behind me thinking there was a particularly cute baby there, and the woman was calling that baby "sweety."
I seriously don't understand as to why DUbamas can't figure out that while it's perfectly fine to call loved ones and relatives "sweety" it's not appropriate in a business setting.

3. My husband called me
honey bear. I threw the bum outta the house. How dare he?

I've been calling my sons sweetie for years. OMG, I've been guilty of reverse sexism! I'm gonna have to throw myself outta the house, too.

13. Do you call the garbage man and other strangers sweetie too?
Next time I get a Fed-X or UPS guy I'm going say, "Thanks, you're a sweetie."
I wonder what he'll say?

22. I'm sure he will brag to his wife!
But he better nit call me sweetie or I'll tell my husband.

All joking aside. You missed my point! I guess I'll have to spell it out. It's different to call a close friend, family member or child sweetie.
But strange men shouldn't call a woman sweetie. Know?

not in the least. In fact, it gives me a smile.

Just lettin' you know that your rules may apply to you but they don't apply to everyone and they certainly don't apply to me.

I simply don't agree with it. Folks in the South call people sweetie, darlin', honey, hon, and all kinds of endearments.
It's to be nice. To make the other person smile. To let the other person know they're special, even if they're just a customer or the garbage man you mentioned.

37. Well, we have very nice garbage men here.
When my husband was in the hospital they came in our garage and took the cans out...emptied them and put them back in the garage. A couple weeks ago the garbage cans weren't out and they called on the car phone and said not to worry...that they would get them for him. I called out and thanked them...but I never would have said, "Thanks sweetie". I guess that's the difference in the North and the South. We don't publicly talk about our faith either the way they do down South. So we need to learn to understand our differences an accept one another the way we are. OK sweetie? See I'm learning...but it sure is hard.

38. Strange men and women call me Sweetie,
Dahlin, Hon often in this part of town. It happens all the time.

And I give it right back at em.

Not only that, everyone is greeted with a "Good Mornin' How ya doin?" Strangers and all.

After Katrina I could always spot the out of towners. They didn't "speak".

Different strokes I guess.

I'm guilty.

I always tell my UPS man something like,

Thanks Sweetie.

So far, he hasn't complained. But he's such a sweetie pie, I really doubt if he'll ever complain.

25. I'm glad my sons treat me better than you treat your mother.
A mother calling a child "sweetie" is not exactly comparable to a man calling someone "sweetie" in a condescending, sexist way.

Disclaimer: Obama may or may not have used it in that condescending, sexist, way. I don't really give a fuck what Obama said; he lost any credibility with me long before the ridiculous "sweetiegate."

But whatever, people are just stretching to find something to bitch about. It's what many at DU do best. :)

29. I do care.
It's not the "sweetiegate" thing I care about. I believe your post was not literally meant, even without a :sarcasm: tag.

Still, the image of some guy punching his mother is horrific to me beyond satire. I care about that.

I care about many other things that Obama does not care about, as well. My response was less because of Obama, though, and more because your words prompted a visceral reaction; I'm a mother of sons. I don't like that visual, even in jest.

34. Didn't we all "emerge from someone's vagina" or a caesarian?
So that means we can all call everyone sweetie, right?

FYI, let me go on record stating that anyone can call me 'sweetie' or 'hon' or 'baby' at anytime. In fact, I encourage it.
