Poll question: Which of these 4 will make the strongest VP candidate for Obama when he gets the nomination?
Sorry if you don't see the writing on the wall with the huge delegate lead, casted votes (and those matter regardless what Clinton says by saying there's no such thing as a pledged delegate based on those votes), and states won, but Senator Barack Obama is our nominee -

The Question is - which of these 4 will shore up his perceived lack of International Affairs experience (also construed as Military Affairs)?

1. Webb bashed women in the miltary a few years ago and it caused problems
This will probably be made into a big deal if he is VP.

17. is this what you were talking about?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/13/AR2006091302301.html

Senator Webb was later endorsed by nine female members of the military

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Webb

I don't think that 30 year old comments that he has retracted will hurt his chances for VP

On the surface he has the same appeal that McCain has, he comes from a military family and he’s “straight talker”.

6. not on purpose, she could be chosen by him, however,
I think she's said such crap about him, that I've never heard any fellow DEM say about another candidate in a primary that it may be hard for him to trust her, and - more importantly based on my reasons for selecting those 4 - she really doesn't have the experience those 4 have, although she certainly has some, but not like they do.

8. may I say, I'm torn on this poll... I'm gonna wait and read some reasons from others,
for now, I say Clark, I guess, if he'd take it, but the other 3 are worthy and I thought Biden did incredibly well in the debates - whereas Richardson (who sounded great with Obama recently) floundered. Webb would also rip their party on their mass failures internationally, pretty well.

For one thing why would he want to answer questions about the latest controversial comments his VP's spouse said.

There are plenty of good female choices if he decides to go that direction. Hillary wouldn't even be a good female choice.

I think they each have their own qualities to bring, but Richardson is the best choice IMO. I like Webb, but I'm not sure he helps more than he may hurt. He could help lock up VA, but I think Obama can handle that on his own. Also, I don't want to vacate a seat we just won.

I say that as a woman.

Richardson seems a good choice - foreign affairs experience, Hispanic voters, strong moral center as evidenced by his ability to stand up to the browbeating of the Clintons and their gang of enforcers.

He's a good choice.

109. I don't know why people (esp. women) say that just picking "any woman"
is foolish. I don't know ANYBODY who is pushing that. We have had so MANY good, skilled, competent women on the political scene for so long it is almost comical to suggest that any candidate we put forth would pick as VP just "any woman," meaning any woman who is incompetent.

It is embarrassing that we still have that kind of rhetoric in the Democratic Party. It is embarrassing that we haven't yet elected a woman president, unlike so many of our allied countries and 3rd world countries.

No, there is something wrong with US for not promoting and supporting the wonderfully strong and talented women we already have in this party.

This is NOT a defense of HRC, per se. In fact, I would like to see a woman president who did NOT have the coattails of a relative or spouse who was president. It would be more meaningful if she did not.

Please, I urge you and everyone on this board to consider how important it is to look to our terrific pool of woman governors, Senators, Representatives and other talented women when we seek a leader or a VP for our country.

79. I think that Boxer would energize and unite Dems, draw FEMALE voters, who are now the majority!
Don't forget -- WOMEN ARE THE MAJORITY OF VOTERS AND MANY OF THEM THINK A WOMAN ELECTED IS WAY OVERDUE -- in states across the country.

the typical electoral math (eg Obama should pick someone eg from Missouri) could also be applied, including putting a woman on the ticket, to be sure. But Boxer brings NO significant negative baggage (unlike hillary), LOTS AND LOTS of experience, WIDE popularity, and uniting the Democratic Party in a year when such a vibrantly united Democratic Party could REALLY KICK ASS (for a badly needed change)

Then we would still have to deal with the gross insufficiency of the Democratic Party agenda, but I'd take that insufficiency over the Repugs any day of the week

126. In response to similar statements about HIM, Biden remarked that a qualified president SHOULD be ...
someone who would make a good Secretary of State. At any rate, I STRONGLY think that a woman, not Hillary, should be on the ticket, as there will inevitably be a lot of disappointed women voters out there if Obama gets the nod. I do NOT think that, electorally, a ticket with HRC on it is a "dream ticket", though I don't doubt she has the smarts and the strong will we need in a president. I suspect frankly that the VP is NOT a spot suitable for her, but that she should and will undoubtedly play a major role over the coming period, if Obama becomes elected. (Also, I am concerned that there be no mass base for backlash, waiting for Hillary in 2012).

I just got a new Obama forward I hadn't seen, with a bunch of American culture images twisted to look Arabic, like KFC's colonel with a turbin on - this baloney is gonna get passed around like sugar cookies at a Christmas bake sale. I believe we need a strong, trusted candidate for VP who can dispute and point to Obama's words, and how he is a great man who will lead by example - unlike Shrub.

114. Obama-Clark would be the TRUE dream ticket
I so badly want to come home!

For four years, Wes Clark was my absolute touchstone in politics. Again, and again and again, as I fumbled through national/international/foreign policy/defense matters, I would find that Wes had already studied and LIVED the issues, and could explain in nuanced detail what would be the proper course of action.

So, not to probe too deeply into the old wound now, but his Clinton support has been extremely painful to deal with. It made me reevaluate my own view of her as a candidate, but on balance I just couldn't go with him on that one. Personally, I think events are proving me right.

I certainly don't think Wes's primary-season support for Clinton is a deal-breaker. The strongest statements Clark has made against Obama's candidacy (that I've seen) can be effectively dealt with by both men, I think. Don't forget that they're both scary-smart. I think if the one asked, the other would accept. Duty, honor, country, after all.

America is just learning about Obama, and the more they learn, the more they like. Most Americans, sadly, know even less about Clark, although he has indeed been well-vetted. Again, the more they learn, the more they'll like. So far from just being someone to somehow "balance" the ticket, it will be crystal clear that Clark would fill that most important part of a vice-president's role completely, he himself would make an excellent president. Not to mention that the breadth of his national security experience makes McCain's laughable by comparison.

On the superficial side, it wouldn't hurt that they'd make the most handsome pair in presidential history.

Here's hoping.

I think Clark is the safer bet, but he may not do it since he was the odds on bet to be VP with Hillary... but if he loves this country as much as I think he does - he will. Richardson certainly impressed me when he spoke with Obama recently. I was so let down by him in the debates previously. Bill has GREAT credentials, as he told us - over and over and over. ha

37. Biden or Webb
Obama needs hard-core military/experience to balance his ticket.

Clinton, I'm dubious. Since people have responded to Obama, in my (somewhat educated, I hope) opinion largely because they want a break from the status quo, Hillary has a hard time fitting in with that message. If she really cans Mark Penn, though, maybe she can make herself over as a born-again populist anti-DLCer. Maybe.

I think that whatever rough patches there are between Hillary and Obama, Clark can smooth over....and he would actually be a more effective Veep for Obama than he would have been for Hillary, cause he wouldn't have to deal with Bill Clinton.

You and I both know that Wes is more progressive than both of the Clintons, and was against going into Iraq much like Obama was. They both believe in talking to the enemy as well.

I think that they are a match made perfect as long as they keep their egos out of it.....cause there too, I believe them to both be humble but to have much pride and confidence.

46. So glad you asked!
We in the U.S. need a ticket with strong foreign policy/international affairs and military experience to show the electorate that we can do it, even tho I don't think when it comes down to it, mccain will be able to demonstrate his KNOWLEDGE in these areas; many may think of him as a nice guy, but when it comes down to it he doesn't have boots on the ground experience. His resume is, in fact, quite weak.

Wes has the experience and can discuss all the issues in ways that everyone can understand; he's a GREAT teacher, and running as VP will give him the face time everyone needs to recognize his abilities. And then obama will have a great partner in the white house; don't doubt for a moment that Wes will serve if asked; he is 100% dedicated to the well-being of the U.S.

I think Biden should remain in his position as Chair of important Senate Committee; notice the news generated this week since hearings of Senate Foreign Relations committee? He'd be a great partner for a Dem white house, in that role.

I don't see Richardson bringing anything particularly critical to the ticket. He negotiates; that's nice. He can go to the U.N.

73. thank you, elleng
rarely do I think a thread of mine is deserving enough to ask for recs so more people talk about this - because the more we talk about it, the more the candidate will have input from those who are active in the party, or meet him and give their opinions - if the guy (Sen. O) hears constantly that people he talks to say, "all my friends and family keep hoping you'll pick (insert name)" it certainly plays somewhat in his decision, along with their own opinion of how they interact together when they meet during interviews.

I voted for Clark in the poll. Ultimately, I think the strong military experience, while we're still searching for Osama, and also, needing to end our major impact in Iraq, is direly important for Obama to choose. I hope he does.

76. Clark or Clarke?
There is Wes Clark (previous candidate in 2004)

and Richard Clarke (former chief counter terrorism advisor under Bush and CLinton

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_A._Clarke

Clarke served in the Reagan Administration as Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence. During the presidential administration of George H.W. Bush, he coordinated diplomatic efforts to support the 1990-1991 Gulf War and the subsequent security arrangements. During the Clinton Administration, Clarke became the counter-terrorism coordinator for the National Security Council. He also advised Madeleine Albright during the Genocide in Rwanda, and directed the authoring of PDD-25<3> which outlined a reduced military and economic role for the United States in Rwanda as well as future peacekeeping operations. He remained counter-terrorism coordinator during the first year of the George W. Bush Administration, and later was the Special Advisor to the president on cybersecurity and cyberterrorism. He resigned from the Bush Administration in 2003.

Clarke's positions inside the government have included:

United States National Security Council, 1992-2003
Special Advisor 2001-2003
National Coordinator for Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Counter-terrorism, 1998-2001
Chair of the Counter-terrorism Security Group, 1992-2003

I used to say Joe Biden...but he looks like an old man.

I don't think you can do Edwards, because #1 he doesn't appear to necessarily want a VP slot and #2 he would be the only person to ever run as VP twice which I dunno... could be a detriment.

I think Richardson is probably the most logical choice. Unless strategists think you have to have a white guy (man or woman) to get independents or something....

I really like Bill or Joe also, so the argument is, did Clark ruin any chance of being selected because of those comments about Obama? And if so, is it really down to Biden or Richardson? There is a chance of someone like Napolitano getting in there, because several woman have stated wisely, millions of women are long tired of seeing a woman not be in the White House in the Oval Office, so a VEEP position is the next best thing, and a stepping stone for females to prove themselves - I don't think it would particularly hurt Obama's chances, despite his probably needing a strong international affairs person as his VEEP, but we'll see... I love the responses, most are thought out.
