If now isn't the time, when is?
Several times lately I've read posts by certain DUers claiming that a black person can't win the general election because "other people are racists". While I reject that premise totally, I'm now starting to wonder, if now isn't the time for a black person to run for president, when is?

Really, isn't that the next logical question to ask? I mean, if now isn't the time will it be time after Wonderfully White Hillary Clinton wins or loses the 2008 election or will we have to wait another cycle or two before "it's time"?

And the question to follow that is: If we never try running a black person for president, how will we ever know if it's time or not? Do we just have to trust the people who keep telling us it's not time yet?

Lastly, if you're so sure it's not time to run a black person what makes you so sure it's time to run a white woman? Shouldn't we just scrap both of the current candidates and see if we can find a white man to come to our rescue?

So, please tell me when it is time, because I've been waiting for a long time for this racism bullshit to end and it looks like the last holdouts are closer than I thought they were.

By the way, for everyone who reads this thread and thinks I'm just stirring things up, I do have proof of what I'm talking about. I'm sure you can find it yourself if you care to.

2. Seriously...this crap about letting bigots decide who Dems nominate
is some scaredy-cat, weak, DLCer tripe. I thought we were all about not letting the RW thugs define who we are. This particular "electability" crap is fearmongering at its lowest. If we're not ready to take back our party, and take back our country, then why the hell are we running, anyway?

5. my response is always
I do not let the likes of racists, bigots, sexists, homophobes, whatever, influence how I vote. Still, I believe we could have had far better candidates than what we currently have running for president - FAR better

20. Yeah, but unfortunately you're not running this year... and
all the other BETTER candidates either decided not to run, or didn't win against the Hillary "manifest destiny" machine in the primaries and had to pull out.

6. Obama is BLACK?!
Anyone who focuses on his skin color is a closet racist looking for an excuse to not vote for him.

His policies are color blind.

8. The reason Obama will win
is that he is not running as a black man for president, he is running for president and happens to be black. That's what's driving all the naysayers crazy -- "Hey everyone! Didn't you notice? He's BLACK!" Meanwhile, Obama's out there representing all of America, not just one segment of the population.

And that's why Clinton doesn't get it, because she is running as a woman -- first and foremost -- for president, subtly sending the message that she will be the president of the women of the USA, not the people of the USA. She will lose.

13. Total agreement
When a Democratic congress passed the Civil Rights Act in the 1960's, the racist Democrats in the south immediately switched their party allegiance to the Republicans, the official party of racism. From some of the disgusting posts I've seen here on GD-P, I suspect that not quite all of them switched, but some will be making that change when Obama is our candidate. My personal opinion: No loss.

16. K/R.
Your post reminded me of Nina Simone's "Mississippi Goddam," and the story behind why she wrote it, sang it and felt it.

"Don't tell me
I tell you
Me and my people just about due
I've been there so I know
They keep on saying "Go slow!"

17. Isn't it sad that...
...people would dare let racists pick their candidate? "Ohhh I'm afraid racists won't vote for a black man, therefore we can't win." What idiocy.

America is ready, and probably has been for some time. Obama's going all the way.

21. Very sad that Hillary supporters are so focused upon race as
one of their major objections to Obama, claiming America isn't ready for a person of color, and, in the next breath, claiming that the reason Hillary is behind is because of sexism.

These folks really need to stop propagating the myths. What has Hillary done to EARN the nomination during her campaign, other than to have her folks propagate these myths?

Edited on Mon Apr-07-08 07:42 AM by Marrah_G
It's no one's time except time for the Repukes to get the fuck out of the WH.

Voting for Hillary isn't being racist. Voting for Obama isn't being Sexist.

I can't wait for this pathetic primary to be over.

23. "Other People Are Racists" Isn't the Point, So Much
It's that Obama based the bulk of his early surge on painting the Clintons as racists.

That's not going to fly in the GE, because there is no such thing as "conservative white guilt" to take advantage of, and Republicans will laugh him out of the room when he tries to pull that shit. The other thing they will do is pull out anything Michelle has ever said or wrote that could be used to insinuate she has a chip on her shoulder, and many of those white liberals in red states who voted for Obama in the primaries will get the shocks of their lives when they realize black people can be assholes, too.
