Hillary Clinton calls on Bush to Boycott Olympics Opening
Edited on Mon Apr-07-08 10:43 AM by TeamJordan23
No Link. It is the Opening, not the whole Olympics. It is a headline on Drudge.

The way I see it, if you are going to boycott something, boycott the whole thing, not just one part.

5. You are only punishing the athletes with this.
This would be a very stupid move. There are other ways to show your outrage over the Tibet crisis.

9. Oh, maybe I misunderstand the post.
I thought this was about the Chimp refusing to attend the ceremonies (as oppposed to the atheletes somehow being banned from the ceremonies).

Really. It's more important to be there and make a statement than not to be there and let the Chinese interpret that statement (our absence).

...I am sick and tired of the pretense that China is an "okay" country now just because they are becoming so capitalistic...

They are led by violent, cruel despotic bastards and they are not only raping their own country they are raping the entire planet...

Thats what France and other nations are consdering. Let the athletes do their thing but no leader should legitimize things by being there.

I agree with most of Hillary's ideas but to boycott the Olympics is not good idea. Y'all remember Carter did this and he was not popular for it. Don't punish the athletes for what Communist China is doing.

10. I agree that he should at least boycott the opening.
We still have a great many athletes participating in the Olympics. So I am not sure you will see any politician boycotting the entire thing, not even Obama. She is right to call on Bush to at least do something to show our disapproval of the Chinese government. On another note, I can not find anything regarding Clinton calling on Bush. But there is recent news of Nancy Pelosi calling on Bush to boycott Olympics.

21. Why don't we
boycott items made in China. You can't say "I won't watch TV" and then put on your jacket (made in China), sneakers (made in China) and go play ball (probably made in Taiwan).

Any boycotts of China that don't include the boatloads of items that we use everyday is a waste of time.

32. But that's exactly my point
nobody is really willing to make a sacrifice that would make a difference. People are only willing to not watch television? Please. The fact that the Olympics are even being held in Beijing almost 15 years after the stadium was built tells me that the entire world could care less about the human rights violations and care more about money and product placement.

When someone actually starts talking to me about a REAL BOYCOTT I'll be down. But a boycott of television is just silly and ineffective since air time has been purchased, hotel reservations have been made and the country of China is getting PAID.

It's too little way to late.

37. I absolutely disagree.
That is not the role of the Olympics, which should not even be a state political platform. This is about people-to-people contacts. Why could we have "ping pong diplomacy" with China in 1971, when the human rights situation in China was so much worse, yet now we pull back?

and it hurt the athletes more than anybody. If the athletes are going to compete I'm sure they would love to be in the opening ceremonies. We can deal with Tibet some other way.

50. Zogby just polled about this
and the fact of the matter is that the further I got into the poll the more complicated it became. Yes, I agree with leaders worldwide boycotting the Olympics, but I also recognize the problems the boycott poses to the US/global economy should China seek retribution. I also doubt that a boycott, or many boycotts, are likely to change the way China deals with Tibet, Christians, or dissent generally.
