From Rachel Maddow: Best description of Mark Penn EVAH!!

Heard this on the Maddow show tonight, and I laughed so hard I had to transcribe it.

Mark Penn, if you're a visual person, he's the guy who looks like ... um ... d'you remember Detective Columbo? The guy in the rumpled overcoat?

Mark Penn is the Hillary Clinton strategist who's worked with her for more than a decade. He looks like ... if Columbo were detoxing from heroin in a locked room that had no air conditioning and no water but was really well-stocked with movie theater popcorn with extra synthetic butter...

I feel like whenever I've seen him interviewed, he looks like -- while he's being interviewed -- that he's actively being mugged.

Moreover, and I admit that as a straight guy I'm not an expert, but judging from what I understand about "butch" and "femme" terminology, Rachel doesn't strike me as particularly "butch."

Furthermore, you seem to be implying that "commenting on her butch appearance" would be tantamount to insulting her. This leads me to believe that you think there's something wrong with being butch. Sorry to burst your bubble there, but not all lesbians are like the ones you seen in porn.

I interpret her remarks to be less an ad hominem attack on Penn than a humorous observation about how Penn's homely exterior seems to perfectly match his ugly, ugly interior. I've made precisely the same observation about Rove many times.

Columbo, the character, was a man of moral conviction who was not swayed by those with either money or political power.

Lieutenant Columbo's character is a true humanitarian and IMO, American Icon most extradinaire. I love his crumpled raincoat and stinky cigar prop.

Being a "dyed in the wool" detective novel/TV fan, I can say with conviction that Mark Penn NO Columbo.

IMO, shame on anyone, for such an inept comparison beyond the superficial. Besides, even during his "worst hair/wrinkled coat" day, Columbo is still, IMO, very attractive human being, i.e., fictional character with morals and class. :grr: :thumbsdown:

that would be far funnier than Rachel's take. But no way do I make fun of how people look, ever. Just no. Even with slime, that is an area that is for me, utterly and fully off limits. Such 'humor' is for those who must rely on lower forms.
I really like Rachel, and I loathe Penn, but his looks have nothing to do with it. To sink to that level is something Rachel really does not need to do. And she should understand that what we put out comes back, and when people add to the verbal assaults on the outer apperance of others they dislike, they need to know that such energy comes back to people they do like. Make a world where it is ok to mock others for how they look, then own that when gay boys and dykettes get mocked for their looks. It is that simple.
Rachel ought to know this stuff. I skip talk radio except for Thom on occasoins just because I can not stand this sort of thing. His appearance has no place in the discussion, nor does anybody else's. Cruel is not defined by the worthiness of the target.
