Obama stole the Hope theme from Bill Clinton.
A gentle reminder for those of you who skipped the 90s, while pining for Raygun, like you know who.

67. he was acknowledging reagan's strengths, not saying he agreed with him.
we may all hate him at DU, but among most americans, he still seems to be remembered pretty fondly.
hillary would've done the same if she thought it'd get her a few more votes.
honestly, i don't see it as a big deal, and i wouldn't have seen it as a big deal if hillary had said it.
after all, you don't have to AGREE with a person if you pay them a compliment.
from how i read it, it was kind of a backhanded compliment anyway.

13. Hillary has been completely unable to cope with Obama. He pwns her. I guess it's fair
that she tried to use his "Yes we can" chant at her rallies. Hill stole Jessie Jackson's "Universal Health Care" campaign slogan for single payer health insurance from 1988, and attached it to her private insurance company subsidy program.

You know what's great about Obama? He's smart, capable, confident, and he's going to make a great president.

15. Just like Bill Clinton stole the word hope from Ted Kennedy's 1980 Dem Convention Speech?
We are the Party -- We are the Party of the New Freedom, the New Deal, and the New Frontier. We have always been the Party of hope. So this year let us offer new hope, new hope to an America uncertain about the present, but unsurpassed in its potential for the future. - Edward Kennedy, DNP, 1980

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/tedkennedy1980dnc.htm

Or maybe Lincoln?

Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. - Abe Lincoln, 2nd Inagural address

22. Hope as a theme
Hope or optimism

Bill Clinton stole it from Bush in 88 (Thousand points of light) who stole it from Reagan in 80 and 84 (Morning in America) who stole it from Carter in 76 who stole it from Kennedy in 60 (Nixon never ran on hope) (New Frontier) who stole it from FDR in 1932 (New Deal)......Who stole it from a rag tag group of colonist in 1776 that had Hope they could become their own nation.

Hope seems to be a winning theme....seems like your candidate should of thought of that instead of Experience

48. I know one thing
I was more impressed with Obama, before I dug out my old VHS tapes from '92 and watched Bill Clinton.

It was absolutely startling, all the Courage to Change optimism along with specifics, the real world application.

From that point forward, Obama's speeches seem like half a loaf.

50. Which makes Bill look bad...
when he goes out there claiming that hope and change are an empty message and that "experience" is most important. Bill ran the same campaign in '92 that Barack is currently running yet he turns around shilling for his wife simply because she got her ass kicked on the "change" message.

53. Didn't know hope was a comodity.
Bill did some good, hope was a theme of his. He was very good at what he did. I won't use this as an oppurtunity to bash Bill or the 90's, I am a fan of both.

That being said. Hill is no bill and the third way/dlc agenda no longer has a place in the party, imho.

54. OK-I'm confused.
If Obama talks about hope, he can't take credit for inspiring people because he stole it from Bill Clinton.

*OR*

If Obama talks about hope, he is misleading people because it's "empty rhetoric" and he's an "empty suit" full of hot air.

Which is it, please? I'm confused. Does that make Bill Clinton full of hot air too?

This is silly.

Really.

Both men are good, persuasive speakers in their own right.

Yes, I have considered that Hillary is dismissing the message her own husband ran on in '92. Did she not believe it then? Why doesn't she now?
Is this another example of how she shows no sign of having consistent beliefs or core values that don't change with each poll? I think it is.

107. Why did Hillary steal Dole's "bridge to the past" theme ?
Since she did not skip the 90's you would have thought she and Penn would have remembered that nostalgia does not move an electorate.
Seriously, nobody "steals" anything in politics. There are a finite number of themes available. The secret is not in concocting a new approach, it is in selecting the right meme for the time and then deploying it successfully.
Politics is the art of persuasion, of moving the polity. Whatever you think about policy differences, Barack has proven conclusively that he is light years ahead of Hillary on connecting with the American people.
BTW, the image of Obama as Frankenstein is childish. If you had something of substance to say , it would have been lost because of the insert.
