Obama seeks talks with Iran over Iraq - Raw Story
Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 12:36 AM by btmlndfrmr
Democratic 2008 hopeful Barack Obama Tuesday called for talks with Iran on stabilizing Iraq, hours after the top US war general said Tehran was the greatest threat to democracy in the war-torn nation.

Obama also suggested the best the United States may now be able to achieve in Iraq was a "messy, sloppy status quo" and argued the Bush administration's goals for Iraq would require a US troop commitment for up to 30 years.

The Illinois senator, battling Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, told war commander General David Petraeus and US ambassador to Baghdad Ryan Crocker that a "diplomatic surge" was needed "that includes Iran."

"Because if (Iraqi prime minister Nuri al-Maliki) can tolerate normal neighbor-to-neighbor relations in Iran, then we should be talking to them as well," Obama said in a crucial Senate Foreign Relations committee hearing.

"I do not believe we're going to be able to stabilize the situation without them."

2. He's right.
My go-to guy on foreign relations, Biden, has been emphasizing that for a long time. It's regional and in everyone's interest in that area to reach a workable relationship.

Obama has courage to come right out and say it at this point -- he's to be commended.

Too busy maniacally yelling at everyone in GDP.

I hit-up the Daily, though.

Good-night, and I hope this gets to the greatest page.

6. Stupid! Obama wants to negotiate the terms of our surrender
to the Mullahs? DAMN!

Now, let's see. When was the last time that a major power talked to a potentially dangerous enemy about the fate of yet another nation? Why, it was Prime Minister of England, Neville Chamberlain, and he was talking to Chancellor Adolf Hitler of Germany about the fate of Chechoslovakia. And what was the result of that? Chamberlain returned to England with a piece of paper in his hand that he proclaimed meant "peace for our time." Checkozlovakia was dismembered. And WW II, which killed upward of 100 million people, started a year later.

Lets all hold hands and imagine a world where we are all friends. A true foreign policy giant in our midsts. Sounds like we got another Jimma Carter.

11. Exclusive: Ambassador Crocker Says Ready to Talk to Iran Again

Following Testimony on Capitol Hill, Gen. Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker Talk to 'Nightline'
By JULIA HOPPOCK
April 8, 2008

In an exclusive interview with "Nightline's" Terry Moran, the American Ambassador to Iraq said he was concerned about Iranian influence in Iraq.
Ambassador Crocker says talks with Iran are important for Iraq's security.

When asked if Americans were in a "proxy war" with Iran, Ryan Crocker said, "It may be that the Iranians see it in that light, we certainly do not."

But he also added that "we don't want to have just what you describe as a proxy war with Iran inside Iraq, and that is why we are willing to sit down with Iran face to face for talks on Iraqi security at the invitation of the Iraqi government. We've had three rounds of those talks and we've told them we are ready to again."
