Hillary says Memphis national champ despite KU having more points
http://endpoliticsasusual.blogspot.com/2008/04/hillary-says-memphis-national-champ.html

In a move that's sure to be seen as controversial, Hillary has contacted the NCAA Board of Directors to argue that Memphis is actually better qualified to be National Champion.

Ms. Clinton stated that Memphis, while losing the game, had actually shown more ability to act like a National Champion on Day One. She argued that Memphis had passed every test during the game, including scoring more points than Kansas for 38 minutes. For 38 minutes they had shown the experience necessary to be National Champion. "Just because some team comes along in the last minute and scores more points than the other guy doesn't mean they're necessarily able to be National Champion on Day One."

Ms. Clinton further stated that Memphis should've won the game had Derrick Rose's second half three pointer been allowed to count. Instead, it was ruled a two after review by the officials. His foot was clearly inside the line. Memphis coach John Calipari said he would ask that the rule allowing monitor review of shots be changed after this season. Hillary said she seconded that, and pointed out had Memphis been allowed to count a three that wasn't really a three they would've won. "It doesn't matter what the rules of the game are before it starts. What matters is how we change the rules after the game so we can have the winner we want."

Kansas, for its part, had this to say to Hillary: "Barack Chalk Jayhawk!"

1. Dupe. Or is Obama at it again?
Claiming someone else's words and thoughts for himself? Nah, probably just a dupe.

6. But. but. but...Memphis' coach has more experience!
Time of possession favored Memphis!
In a national poll more people viewed Memphis players favorably compared to Kansas players!
"Rock Chalk Jayhawk" is sexist!

I love it. Barack Chalk Jayhawk!

8. Kansas was an anti-slavery state
and Lawrence was founded by folks from the North Eastern states to be a anti-slavery city.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk isn't sexist... it's geologist! (Lawrence is located on limestone bluffs that overlook the Kaw river).

11. Miracle Mario wants to wait until Barack is in WH before going there
"It will be an honor to go to the White House and meet the President. I asked Coach if we could maybe postpone it a few months, until Barack was in there."
so saith "Miracle" Mario Chalmers

fwiw, Calipari is a former Jayhawk b-ball assistant coach. He started under Ted Owens and worked for Larry Brown. When Cal left, Bill Self took his old job. It was truly a Jayhawk NC game.

12. Basketball is a Kansas/North Carolina/Kentucky/UCLA
sport...

Here is another set of connections for Kansas... Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball... and Phog Allen was one of the most successful coaches ever in the game, both coached at KU... which is why there is Allen Fieldhouse on Naismith Drive in Lawrence, KS.

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Naismith

Naismith moved to the University of Kansas in 1898, following his studies in Denver, becoming a professor and the school's first basketball coach. University of Kansas went on to develop one of the nation's most storied college basketball programs.

With a record of 55-60, Naismith is the only Kansas coach to have a losing record. Nevertheless, Naismith has one of the greatest coaching legacies in basketball history. Naismith coached Forrest "Phog" Allen, his eventual successor at Kansas, who went on to become one of the most successful coaches in U.S. college basketball history. The actual playing surface of Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas is named the James Naismith Court. Phog Allen was the college basketball coach of Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp, who are two of the most successful men's college basketball coaches, and won a combined total of six NCAA championships. Adolph Rupp was the college basketball coach of Pat Riley who is one of the greatest coaches in NBA history and has coached five teams to the NBA championship, including the 2006 NBA champion Miami Heat. Dean Smith went on to be the college basketball coach of hall of fame coach Larry Brown (who also coached at the University of Kansas for five seasons, leading them to a national title in 1988), current North Carolina coach Roy Williams (who also coached for 15 seasons at the University of Kansas previous to that, and won a national championship in 2005 with North Carolina), and basketball great Michael Jordan. In the late 1930s Naismith played a role in the formation of the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball, which later became the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

17. Are you questioning my fanhood?
;)

Did you know that this was KU's 13th FF appearance? Did you know that Naismith originally had 13 rules for basketball? Did you know that Wilt's number was 13 when he played for KU?

Dude, I was raised a Jayhawk and am a fifth generation Jayhawk to boot. I was born in Lawrence when my dad was going to school at KU (he got one graduate degree and three masters there). I attended KU and earned both my undergrad and JD degrees there. I worked at KU for years. I've probably forgotten more about KU/Lawrence than most people will ever learn.

My ancestors (on my dad's side) were from Massachusetts and Maine and were among the first settlers in Lawrence. My grandfather's childhood playmate was Langston Hughes who was living across the street from our family's house on Alabama Street at his grandmother's house. My dad was recruited by Dick Harp. My dad's middle name is "Warren" because we're related to the Warrens of Warren Street (now 9th Street). One of my brother's middle name is "Emery" because we're related to the people that "Emery Road" is named after. I have one Hall at KU and two streets (one on campus and one in Lawrence) named after my family. We used to have a club named after one of my uncles at the Alumni Center but it got shut down a few years ago. I could go and name some other streets and family connections to Lawrence and KU but I won't. I don't have time.

In addition, one of my brothers (see his picture below) played JV for Mark Turgeon, after Larry Brown talked him into going out for basketball. My little brother went to Larry's KU basketball camps. Another of my brothers played football for KU and played in two bowl games (not to mention that he also coached at KU in another sport). One of Bill Self's best buds was my old high school boyfriend (I went to high school in OKC).

I don't need a wiki to school me on KU or Lawrence. I'm a living embodiment of it. ;)

Oh, and look, here I am with Bill Self. He's holding a painting my brother did in honor of the games that Naismith and Allen coached at Haskell (now Haskell Indian Nations University) and presented to Bill the first year Bill was at KU. To my knowledge Bill still has the painting hanging in his office behind his desk. fwiw, my mom, several of my brothers (I've got six of them), my cousins, aunts, uncles and now my nephew have been students at Haskell.

Here's a picture I took of my little brother with Danny Manning. It was during our visit with Bill. Danny was giving us a tour of the offices. He's an old family friend. He used to drop by the house with Sean Alvardo and Milt Newton to visit with my grandmother.

I'm a Jayhawk through and through. ;)

You know it's all true. And what can I do? One of the names, although alluded to and not mentioned, is mine. fwiw, I think we invited you over to the house to watch a football game with us and one of the members of 1988 National Championship basketball team when he was in town. Otherwise, you'd be dropping names too. Naturally you had some lame excuse (I think it was "my son has my car") and couldn't make it. It was too bad too because I think that was the day that Gayle "the Kansas Comet" Sayers called the house to thank us for the tape we made for him. My little delivered the tape and was in Toledo at Gayle's house watching the game with him.

26. You know how I am on game days
I would go mega-ADHD. Then I would sit down and have a couple of smokes and the next thing I knew it was game time. Our 1988 buddy came over and started telling us stories about that year. He stood up and recited the "Larry Brown" pep talks he got before the games. I had a physical reaction to them. First my toes curled at the language and then my sides hurt from laughing. Ah, good times, good times.

You met our buddy Mike once. You talked to him once when you were looking at applying for a job at KU. Mike played for KU and then played for the KC Chiefs and the Rams. He lives in Lawrence and he was one of our tailgate/travel buddies. He lives a few blocks from the stadium and has some kick ass pre-game parties. He's the one who got us tickets for the 2003 FF in New Orleans for cheap. I think we paid something like $100 for a set of tickets for the Saturday and Monday games. He also put us on the "pass" list for all the alumni functions. He's the guy that gets us stuff like t-shirts, caps, autographed balls, and other KU paraphernalia like the KU light switch cover I had in the bathroom back home. I had so many "Terry Towels" (in honor of former football coach Terry Allen) that I actually started using them in the kitchen.

Have I told you how much I miss Lawrence?

When I was a kid (very small) I used to watch Wilt play... and Gale Sayers play football too.

27. I never got to see Wilt play at KU
mostly because I wasn't born yet. When I was a little kid my parents moved to OKC but we would drive up for KU games once in a while. I semi-sorta remember my dad talking about the time we saw Jo Jo play. I do remember seeing Stallworth, Big Mo and those guys. Most of the time we'd have to listen to games on the radio. We'd pick up a station from south Kansas. For a number of games (this was pre-cable) we'd have to go to the roof of my mom and dad's house to get reception. My mom, dad and all of us kids would be sitting on the roof with the radio. During the games mom would go down to the kitchen, make sandwiches and stuff and then hand them up to the roof. The few neighbors we had thought we were weird but there were a number of times when the neighborhood kids would join us.

I went to a lot of basketball and football games in the 70's and by the 80's I had season tickets to both sports. But my first love was always KU basketball. I do remember there were times when I could sit just about anywhere in AFH. That was during the end of the Owens years. Once LB got there the fieldhouse filled up. fwiw, my brother's office (when he was a coach) was in the southeast part of AFH. We'd sit in the student section and go to his office during halftime to watch highlights on television.

Some years we got to go to the KU Relays. My grandparents lived on Alabama St., four blocks north of the stadium (my aunt is living in the house now) and some of my best memories are watching the annual fireworks display either from the street or in the stadium. When I first started attending KU I lived in that house on Alabama and would walk by the stadium every day on the way to classes. On my way home, I'd head up Oread and go to the Crossing, another family tradition. My dad went when it was the Rock Chalk and my older siblings were there in the 70's when it was named "The Ark" and "The Catfish".

One more piece of basketball trivia that is sort of pertinent to the FF. Did you know that the first coaching job Larry Brown had was at Davidson? He never actually coached a game there (I think he was only there for the summer) but I thought it was interesting that one of the hardest games we had at the tournament was the Davidson one.

As for some of the similarities between the 1988 game and this year:

The "star" of the game was Mario. Mario's dad is a KU basketball assistant coach. Back in 1988, the star was Danny and his dad was an assistant coach.

Ed Hightower officiated at both games.

We went through Nebraska and Michigan both years as part of the Midwest regional bracket.

Both KU and K-State were in the Midwest regional brackets in 1988 and 2008.

In 1988, Archie Marshall was there in his knee brace and the team dedicated the games to him. This year, we had Rodrick who blew out his knee and the team dedicated the last few games for him.

Both Larry Brown and Bill Self were in their fifth year as head coach when they won the National Championship.

Then there is the "almost" stuff, like Vandi, we played them in '88 and, if they had won, we would have played them this year. Same for K-State. Speaking of K-State, Lon Kruger was coach at K-State that year and if UNLV had won we could have faced a Kruger coached team again.

And there are striking dissimilarities like the 88 team wasn't expected to go very far but the expectations were the opposite this year (at least among the fans, certainly not the announcers). And back in '88 we were dependent on one player in particular but this year it was a team effort.

15. Kansas also won my mom 68 bucks
in her NCAA tournament pool.

Her National Championship match? Memphis v. Kansas. This is a woman who knows nothing about basketball beyond the Celtics.

It gets better: Her Final Four were UNC, USC, Memphis, and Kansas. 3 of 4.

It's not serious discussion (despite the humor impaired poster who didn't realize it was sarcasm) of the primaries.

I guess all the Obama fans find it humorous though. I think it's just another in a long string of cheap shots.
