I admit that I do! There's a NYT article coming out in this Sunday's magazine section.

87. Not exactly ...
He has one real talent, and I am serious ... All of the MSM types of their fingers in the air and go with who is in, to cater to those in power ... Up until the last year or so, they had SO LONG ago just sold out to the right wing, they forgot they had sold out ...

Mathews has a sharper radar for the wind changes ... Now, keep in mind, there were two things that MSM types had to do to remain in the good favor with the GOP when they were on top ... 1) suck the right wings butt ... 2) And/OR, always paint the dems as negatively as possible ... You could get away with not sucking the right wing's butts, or even being negative with them on occassion as long as you countered that by ALWAYS painting the dems negatively ...

Mathews was smart in that regard ... He offered occassional criticism of the right, but was smart enough to do the negative painting of the democrats ... He got ahead of the curve in being harder on the Rs at times, and has tempered, just a bit, the negativity of the dems ...

4. As a matter of fact I just read that article.
And I still can't come to a sane conclusion about him. He sounds insecure and overly secure at times. I have'nt been able to watch him for some time, but I can say that for CNN, MSNBC, CBS, etc. Are they all Punch and Judy productions?

8. Well, I like his occasional pop culture references.
He'll be talking along about changing the government in Iraq and he'll suddenly mention the "new Darren" from the old comedy Bewitched. Stuff like that catches me by surprise and cracks me up every time.

It ain't much but it's all I got.

24. He played a central
role in exposing the Plame scandal. From "page one" of Joseph Wilson's book, to the court documents that showed VP Cheney's obsession with "Hardball's" reporting on the WMD lies, Matthews' role was very important.

I will speculate that you are not likely to buy it, but if you did read it, I am confident that you would say that he has both a good and bad side. I don't think "useless" is accurate, but perhaps that is because I've read the book.

15. My mom and I have a love-hate relationship with him.
I read his book when I was first getting into politics and I thought it was interesting. He can be obnoxious and piss me off at times, but most of the time he's fair and obnoxious to everyone. I got really pissed off when he asked that Texas state legislator about Obama's accomplishments but did not ask Stephanie Tubbs Jones the same question (which I highly doubt she'd have been able to answer either). But most of the time he is equally obnoxious to everyone. Sometimes he really pisses me off though.

59. I Know That's The Meme
But back, he was speaking out against it. I sometimes think people mistake his man crush on *, the flight suit, standing 'nobly' at the towers for support of the war. It was one of the reasons why the OVP kept complaining to Russert about him.

“Conversely, he is also often criticized by conservatives for his opposition to the Iraq war among other stances he takes against the Bush administration. Conservative watchdog groups also accuse Matthews of constantly taking Democratic Party positions <6>. Matthews made repeated statements against the Bush administration's decision to go to war in Iraq<7> (examples include "George W. Bush disappointed a lot of us when he went to war...I voted for the guy in 2000." and "When are we going get to vote against this damn war?").”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Matthews

Feb 14, 2003
“He's the only mainstream cable host who's openly opposing the administration's rush to war, and almost every night he battles bloodthirsty Iraq hawks and rails against spineless Democrats who won't muster the power to stop them”

66. Did you see him last night? He really lit into the RW veteran
forhis defense of the Iraq war when Matthews was talking about the number of American casualties, the guy actually laughed and Matthews snapped "It's not funny!" The vet immediately lost his smile and mumbled "no, it's not funny..." and looked sheepish.

I cheered Matthews for that moment. I just wish he'd have more of them...

thinking and interrupts people - that bugs me. I don't like some of his sexist tendencies...like
the thing he said about Hillary getting elected to the Senate because people felt sorry for her. Yuck.

Otherwise, he says some interesting things. I liked it when he said that the reason superbugs don't get the press they should was because
of the "E" word - evolution. I thought that was pretty astute.

All of the pundit-types annoy me occasionally. Even Keith.

Hell, I like pat Buchanan as a commentator, even though I end up arguing with my TV when he's talking. He's a guy that I would be happy to sit in a room and argue with.

I like Chris Matthews, but that's because I don't take my media pundits too seriously. It's quite the doofus a lot of the time, and says some positively doofus things. But that's part of why I like him... I laugh at him when he's a doofus, but I also enjoy his guest and sometimes his commentary.

64. Can't stand him
though my sample size is very small.

I have tried to watch him a few times - when I was waiting for special guests - and he really is full of himself. He had a good panel, asks good questions, but does not let any of them to complete a sentence. He clearly asks a question just to hear himself, and he shouts down his guests. I don't know why anyone even goes there for a second time. Why no one just gets up, remove the mic and says: well, Chris, you obviously do not need me to hear yourself talking.

65. Lately I Do
he cracks me up.

Ever since MSNBC tweaked their programming more to the left - Matthews is fun to watch. He's smart and has a quick sense of humor and he loves politics. Of course if I were a Hillary supporter, I'd probably not watch him. He doesn't hide his admiration for Obama. He used to drive me nuts and yes he crosses the line in the sexism dept..

stand it. He can go either way. His questions can either be mundane or smart.

Last night he called Obama elegant (as a compliment). I think he is sometimes a bit schizo.

74. I hate the way he keeps interrupting his guests.
He is too much in love with the sound of his own voice. During that session last week with Obama and the college students he talked so much himself he hardly let the poor students get a word in edgewise.

79. Well
Chris Matthews is actually pretty good at distilling issues into soundbites and penetrating questions. I recall in 2004 that he was on Don Imus' program telling Kerry how he should be summarizing various things in a very tight way that would resonate with voters instead of getting caught up in his Senate-ese way of speaking that loses people listening to him. He was dead on, frankly. He was giving very specific examples, like a political campaign aide/strategist would do for a candidate. He knows how to talk to Average Joe/Jane Americans. Obama does, too, but a lot of Democrats in office really don't at all. So, Matthews is gifted at certain things. I'll give him that.

85. I like what he said about Hillary today.....
Today on Hardball Chris Matthews said that at some point Hillary Clinton has to decide whether or not she is "a winner or a victim." He speaks for many of us!

94. He is much brighter and and more agressive interviewer than Russert
that's for damn sure. I think he has an enormous wealth of
knowledge of history as well.

I think Russert is hugely over-rated. He may try to
follow-up but never comes back and never really scores
the big one. Nice guy - but dumb as dirt. IMHO, that is.

96. He has one of the best pundit shows on TV, and sometimes I even like him.

I like him because he knows politics. Many people and pundits know how they feel about things, know 'which side' they fall on etc., but people like Matthews and Chuck Todd and Pat Buchanan actually know politics, as in the recent history of the 10th House district in X state, and where demographics are bumping up against reapportionment strategies, and how issue A will divide the Rs in which state in which year. And how it's all happened before in some variation.

These days I often disagree with him, but there have certainly been many times when he hit one out of the park. His anti-Iraq war stance was the most vocal and unequivocal of any MSM person I heard.

September 1, 2002 - "So I'll say it: I hate this war that's coming in Iraq. I don't think we'll be proud of it. Oppose this war because it will create a millennium of hatred and the suicidal terrorism that comes with it. You talk about Bush trying to avenge his father. What about the tens of millions of Arab sons who will want to finish a fight we start next spring in Baghdad?

Well, that's it for now. You know where I stand." - Chris Matthews, San Francisco Chronicle

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2002/09/01/IN133269.DTL

And he shreds Michelle Malkin here, like nobody in the MSM ever does, though they all should.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoM90bAsr1M

And he shreds Ann Coulter here, like nobody in the MSM ever does, though they all should.

Just sayin'.
