At Hillary fundraiser, Elton John criticizes misogyny of Americans - "I say to hell with them."

Elton John: 'To hell with them'

There's a real crowd at Radio City, complete with scalpers, and lines around the block for Elton John and the Clintons.

Toward the back of one line: Frank Luntz, Lanny Davis, and Doug Schoen. ("I used to be in business with Mark Penn," Schoen joked.)

Inside, Bill Clinton introduced his wife, thanked the packed house for contributions to keep the race going, and asked for more, to shouts of "We miss you, Bill."

"If you know anybody who didn’t come here tonight who could send some money over the Internet …," he said.

"What I want you to know is, I’m still standing," Hillary told the crowd. I believe that this country is worth fighting for, so we’re talking our campaign to Pennsylvania and to all the states that haven’t voted."

Elton John was a bit edgier:

"I never cease to be amazed at the misogynist attitude of some of the people in this country," he said. "I say to hell with them."

Come on out, sing some songs, say you like Hillary a lot, and GTFO.

Don't play the faux-outrage card for an applause line. Other people will find out and get angry.

With that said, his music is fantastic and will not leave my ipod even if he becomes an evil third-world dictator.

He isn't ignorant. He is simply supporting a different Democrat then you are. That puts him squarely on our side as the activist he has always been.

120. Holy homophobe bat man!
I guess one would only bring 'a gay guy' from England if one had to, right? But that is what you actually said, whereas Elton did not say 'everyone who's not voting for Hillary' he said the misogynistic attitude of some people in this country. And he's right, and you and your uterus are homophobic, and willing to let it show as you spin against a good person for the sake of a Candidate. Posturing tripe from a snipinig posure.
If you had to bring in a gay guy. If you had to. A gay guy.

210. My apologies
I guess I shouldn't try to be funny late at night. I have nothing against gays, Hillary, or Elton John. In fact, I was listening to EJ on the way home from class tonight. Again, I'm sorry if my words were misconstrued.

I am not homophobic. Even though I am straight, I fully support gay rights, marriage equality, repealing DADT, etc. Several good friends of mine are gay - they even let me in on the "toaster" joke.

Oh, and John Barrowman may play an "omnisexual" character that will sleep with anybody, but in RL, he's married to his long-time partner and is heading up a campaign to stop the bullying of gay teens in England.

Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 08:14 AM by ShortnFiery
Someone needs to remind Elton John that even that old tired war horse, Margaret Thatcher, NEVER (not ever!) played the "Gender Victim" card even in her hardball political days. For all of her horrific (warmongering - right winger) faults, at least Thatcher had the class to just merely *outperform the boys* on their own turf and at their own game. Further, her husband Denis, was a very humble and likeable man as "First Husband" and did not get involved in HER Business.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29977-2003Jul8.html

While flogging her book in London last week, Hillary Clinton unexpectedly revealed her admiration for a great British political figure. Curiously, her kind words were not for Tony Blair, who is often compared to her husband, but rather for one of his illustrious conservative predecessors. Clinton has, it seems, been a fan of Margaret Thatcher's for many years. Following the Iron Lady's career from afar, Clinton particularly admired Thatcher's ability to adapt herself to fit the job. "My goodness, she changed her hair, she changed a lot of things," Clinton told a British interviewer, who gleefully described the junior senator from New York as a woman with an "iron simper."

snip

And although they made jokes about him, nobody thought he was unimportant or uninteresting, either. Obviously, his own career had been successful, and he was glad that his wife's was too. In fact, it takes a great deal of self-confidence to stand aside, when a spouse is shining in public -- and great determination to stay there. Cherie Booth, Tony Blair's wife, began by staying well out of the limelight -- refusing to give interviews, sticking to her legal career -- but finally couldn't resist chairing a few policy meetings in Downing Street, thereby bringing the wrath of the great British public down upon her head.

And Hillary Clinton? I hardly need to spell it out. Clearly, she made a big mistake many years ago, when she identified with the wrong Thatcher.

128. Elton would know
That in his own country the UK, he and his partner are legally and equally married, but that in the USA, his partner's home country, that Union is not recognized due to discrimination, rooted in homophobia, which is founded on misogny.
He would also know that these unjust laws apply to his household, in spite of the fact that he has paid more taxes to this country than many large corporations. He has raised more money for chairities here than anyone posting here, make that everyone posting here, on every thread, for a month.

How dare he say some Americans bear prejudices, I mean what kind of a man would get up and say that? In front of 7 flags and including his grandma by name, the very candidate supported by those who are 'offened' at this comment, said most Americans bear prejudices, did he not? And of course both Obama and Elton are correct on that.

It is an intellectually dishonest argument to think that if you don't support a woman politician that you are a "misogynist".

Are people who think Condi Rice is a liar "misogynists"? If I don't like Libby Dole, am I a "misogynist"? I can't stand Ann Coulter...so I'm a "misogynist"?

Hillary Clinton has run a nasty and failing campaign, voted for Bush's war in Iraq and is a pathological liar. It's NOT "misogyny" to point out the truth.

Are there still misogynistic attitudes in the country? Yes.

More pertinent is why would Elton bring up how misogynistic attitudes suck at a Hillary concert. Surely he was trying to link misogynistic attitudes with those that don't support Hillary, no? Maybe he could have condemned McDonald's while he was at it...

197. It is an issue of the campaign
His Hillary support most likely stems from Obama's use of McClurkin. McClurkin stood at Obama's concert and openly attacked not Hillary, but all gay people, without apology. Elton is a fan of Gospel music and would be, as I have been, aware of McClurkin both as a musician and in his later role as minister of prejudice. Musician vs musician. While you may not understand it at all, Obama's McClurkin events were very personal to many of us in showbusiness, on levels not shared by the general population. Like it or not, those evnets and the subsequent handling of them by Obama was probably the deciding factor in Elton's household, which is half American, half British, and 100% Gay. Legally married in the UK, legally strangers in the US. Because of misogynistic attitudes in this country.
Misogyny is the cornerstone of homophobia. Some of us live with it daily. He was linking misogynistic attitudes to those who have them and those who promote them. The hope is that those people will change and reject those bigotries. Offending misogynists is not exactly a big worry for those of us who oppose them. Let me offer a nice quote from a great American:

"Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their reputation or social standing never can bring about reform. Those who are really in earnest are willing to be anything or nothing in the world's estimation, and publicly and privately, in season and out, avow their sympathies with despised ideas, and bear the consequences." -- Susan B. Anthony

And one from another American:
"Traveling around the world, sitting with the president, this means more than anything to me.”----Donnie McClurkin referring to George W Bush and his personal priorities.

A Brit is in a good position to lecture the US on backward attitudes around gender and sexuality. His legal UK marriage to an American is not legal here in America. So gee. Actual issue. From his actual life.

And they live in Atlanta. Their marriage is fully legal in the UK but not here. Homophobia is a subset of sexism. Those attitudes touch even the superstar Elton and his partner David, an American. Elton has also paid more taxes to the US than I have earned in a lifetime, or ever will. He lives here, pays taxes here for decades and is married to an American.

If Hillary isn't winning, apparently it's because we all hate women. Baloney. She's running a lousy campaign, people. That's the problem. She's gotten terrible advice from overpaid shills and she's losing. It has nothing to do with being a woman. She began her campaign by assuming she'd already run and that was poor judgement. Other women have become heads of state and no one seems to mind. Thatcher, Merkel and others. It's not the gender that is the problem, it's the person.

..making blanket claims of sexism as the general excuse of everything doesn't help eradicate it, in fact it only reinforces it.

I applaud those DUers who have chosen not to politicize the term sexism by making blanket accusations and instead focus on specific examples of how sexism rears its ugly head in our society, such as how the media responded to Clinton in Texas.

Who ever said it was the general excuse. People are refusing to LISTEN. Dismiss the allegations. Don't look at the facts. Pretend it is not really there--just loosers whining.

I have never said it was a general excuse for everything. But, to deny that it is not present in this election you have to purposefully ignore a ton of facts that are before you daily.

194. Lots of things are present in this election. Sexism, Racism, Classism - we should be discussing
specifics.

Just saying "there's so much sexism" makes people feel like all criticism is being attacked in a disingenuous way by throwing around the term "sexist."

Instead of seeing so many threads saying things like "the rampant sexism at DU" or "the sexism in this campaign" I think it would be much better if people started being specific, because the specific examples of sexism ARE really compelling.

-- Media and DU reaction/characterization to "emotional" Clinton
-- Media and DU reaction to her anger in Texas against what she felt were unfair ads by the Obama campaign
-- Specific media figures who are allowed to be sexists, such as Chris Matthews
-- And so on.

When we get specific, its not as easy for people to feel like we're politicizing the issue or trying to use "sexism" as a political tactic against "all" criticism.

But to Hell with those who try to put up strawman arguments as well.

I'm fine with Elton John saying what he did just as I supported the Dixie Chicks when they commented on bush*. Whether I agree with what he says isn't important in that respect. He exercised his right.

Unfortunately, he decided to use that right to imply that Obama supporters are misogynists which is not only untrue but uncalled for. It is inappropriate just as it would be inappropriate for George Clooney to imply that all Clinton supporters are racists from the stage at the Oscars.

Also, some might consider it a bit misogynistic to marry a woman to use her as a cover to hide your homosexuality from the public. Glass houses and all.....
