I imagine he may have let slip a line or two in anger or the rhythm of a sermon that might say that, but those lines would be countered by his calls for racial harmony. He doesn't "preach" that anyone should hate anyone. He does preach that injustice will lead to retribution, and no doubt the injustices he mentions will be heavily tilted towards white folk, since we are the ones with the power to create and the history of creating the injustices. And at times his "I warned you" message might sound like he's enjoying the retribution, rather than simply taking credit for being right.

But that's not the message he preaches. No individual can be summed up by random comments that are at odds with the body of their comments and statements. Everyone says stupid stuff now and then. Reverend Wright has meant a lot to a lot of good people. To dismiss him is to dismiss them.

One thing that surprised me over the Wright fiasco was who was raising and using the issue. The media couldn't get enough of it, but none of the major contenders spoke against him. Clinton warned her people to not criticize him or Obama, McCain did much the same, and Mike Huckabee strongly defended Wright. I thought at the time that maybe they all understood how easily a person can be misrepresented by random comments from their own experiences, and felt sympathy for the man.

Then again, the issue could come up in some form in the general, so maybe I'm praising McCain (two words I rarely utter together) prematurely.
