Obama to receive Philadelphia endorsements today

By Marcia Gelbart
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

A bevy of city and state elected officials - specifically, six City Councilmembers, three state represenatives and two state senators - are expected to endorse Barack Obama for president at 2 p.m. today in City Hall.

"In addition to voicing support for their preferred Democratic candidate, this endorsement event is meant to balance the endorsements of other political leaders in the city and state, including Mayor Nutter and Governor Rendell," stated a press release announcing the event.

Nutter and Rendell are backing Hillary Rodham Clinton in Pennsylvania's April 22 primary.

The Council members who will announce their support of Obama today are: Curtis Jones, Bill Green, Jannie Blackwell, Donna Reed-Miller, Jim Kenney and Wilson Goode, Jr.

Among the Pennsylvania lawmakers will be state senators Shirley Kitchen and Vincent Hughes, and state representatives Jewell Williams, Harold James and Tony Payton Jr.

"In Pennsylvania, we realize that top party officials are not with us as it relates to Senator Obama's candidacy," Jones said, "but there are three words that were born in Philadelphia and still resonate across the Commonwealth today, and they are 'We the People.'"

29. Except, Obama is more about exclusion than inclusion..
"We the People" does not resonate with his campaign!

No more than a false positive.

49. hillary has to win by a margin of 65% to even maintain the semblance
of viability.
at this point her candidacy is a mythical, cultist, illusion.
she would have to then win indiana by a margin of 67%
then north carolina by 84% margin.

i hate to quote john lennon when talking about hillary but the "dream is over".
it has been for a while.
just because your candidate has a scorched earth, hell or high-water, me or mcain, kitchen sink campaign strategy changes nothing.

the longer she stays in the more it hurts our GE chances.
you and i both know she has no chance.
only thing she can do to win is coup by super delegate which will sunder the party.

AND she is a republican anyways.
who will say anything (and adopt any accent) to curry favor and try to woo people.
i loathe hillary clinton and i have voted democrat all my life.
it is not a coincidence.

besides do you really want another serial liar in the white house?

15. Some more good news today from the Inquirer: Shift in PA population has a liberal, urban edge
Shift in Pa. population has a liberal, urban edge

By Paul Nussbaum

Inquirer Staff Writer

STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Slowly but surely, Pennsylvania is tilting southeastward.

As the population shrinks in western Pennsylvania and grows in eastern Pennsylvania, the politically pivotal state is becoming more suburban, more Democratic, more eastern. It is becoming more like New Jersey and less like Ohio.

Since 1970, the 16 westernmost counties have lost about 400,000 people, according to census data. Meanwhile, the 15 easternmost and southeasternmost counties have gained about 900,000.

Here in Monroe County, in the heart of the Poconos, the population grew by nearly 30,000 - 20 percent - between 2000 and 2006 as former residents of New Jersey and New York continued to move in, attracted by lower housing costs and lower taxes. To the north, neighboring Pike County gained 26 percent, and in adjacent Northampton County, to the south, population was up 9 percent in the same period.

"We're finally getting some of the restaurants we always wanted, and now we don't have to go to Scranton or Wilkes-Barre or Allentown to shop," said Suzanne McCool, a retired New Jersey teacher who is the new chairwoman of the Monroe County commissioners. "Monroe County used to be very rural and conservative. With the influx of people, they've given us a new vitality. . . . Diversity is up. We're like a small city in the makeup of our county."

The gains in the south and east, despite big population losses in Philadelphia, have increased the influence of the state's younger, more affluent, more urban residents. Politically, the shift has made the state less conservative, though it remains less liberal than New Jersey and New York.

it says one thing loud and clear. These people feel so certain
that he will win in the end - that they are putting their political

44. I said this the moment Pennsylvania came into play for the primaries and I'll say it again
Obama is gonna win Pennsylvania by a squeaker. If he can get a major turnout in Philadelphia and a good turnout in Pittsburgh - the rest of the state doesn't matter. And the one person who knows that is Clinton-supporting Ed Rendell - that's how he scored a major upset over Bob Casey Jr.

Rendell's success was that he was a popular mayor out of Philadelphia and got president election turn-out for a mid-term primary. Now you have the first African-American running for office and Ed Rendell hasn't been mayor of Philly for 10 years. PLUS the SEIU union is backing Obama - that's the Union you want if you want to win Philly. They'll actually give their workers the day off PAID to go out and work election day. I know that building quite well since I've done enough elections for governors, senators and presidents out of that building. Now you may be asking what is so special about the SEIU and it's this: Philadelphia will get hundreds of volunteers from all over the Philadelphia metro area and most of those volunteers want to be campaigning someplace safe - like the Great Northeast, Manyunk or Center City. Most of these volunteers don't want to actually go where the real votes are at which is North & West Philadelphia but the SEIU will purposively send their members into those sections with Buses to help get people to the polls. They are the Union that will get the president-election turnout for a primary election in Philly. And if they are backing Obama - that's a major major boon too!
