Somebody PLEASE explain purpose of SDs to B Boxer!
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 04:48 PM by TexanDem
Barbara Boxer was interviewed by Wolf a few minutes ago praising both Democratic candidates, not endorsing, she said. He commented that her state California went for Hillary, so would she vote accordingly. She matter of factly stated that she said before California's primaries that she would go with the state's choice. He deduced that meant she would vote for Hillary. Yes, she said that's what she intends to do.

Well, if that were what the SDs are supposed to do, then count 'em all up now. That is clearly NOT the purpose of the SDs. Those SDs who wish to wait till the end are to vote according to the status of the candidates at the END of the campaign on an overall basis, states won, popular vote, delegates, momentum, general public mood toward the candidates -- take it all into consideration. If she wants to come right out and endorse Hillary -- then do it, but don't use this "my state" thing and act like she's being sooo freakin' self-righteous and doing the "will of her people." Does she think the winner of the state primary/caucus takes all of the SDs?

Barbara is a ditz!!! I hope that's not a politically incorrect term!

(EDIT) SHE's NOT ALWAYS A DITZ. I think she's being a ditz about this! I'm not trying to crucify Boxer. I just don't like her reasoning about THIS issue!
(END EDIT)

end rant!

Question of curiousity for whoever runs the numbers -- if the SDs' votes were determined by how their prospective states voted, if that were the guideline, then how would that divvy up?

Senator Boxer is TRULY an outstanding member of the Senate. And hardly a "Ditz".

4. You're making us Obama supporters look bad with this thread.
Barbara Boxer is a great senator who is voting according to her principles. If that means she's voting for Hillary, then I support her in that.

It's time some people learned that every move by a politician isn't a personal attack on them.

5. This is why Im not a Boxer fan
She's a typical politician, and exemplifies what is wrong with Dems in Congress.

Unable to take a stand until she's sure she has appropriate cover for her actions just in case something goes awry.

And Clinton supporters shouldnt take comfort in her comments today, her words still left enough wiggle room to vote Obama by the convention if voting against him would put her support on the losing side.

As I said, ultimately she's a typical politician.

15. Excuse me but are you fucking serious???
Barbara Boxer stood up in Florida for Al Gore within days of the 2000 stolen election -- she was on the ground with Robert Wexler, vocally speaking out when most of the other Dems were sitting their with their thumbs up their asses.

Barbara Boxer strongly and vocally opposed the IWR, when too many of the other Dems -- including Hillary Clinton -- were checking the political winds to see which way to vote.

By the lame accusations in your OP, you show your complete ignorance of who Barbara Boxer is and what she has done as a Senator.

Assailing Boxer for crying during the Bush vote certification.

And that's why I use quotes on supporter.

Because they are obvious idiots here only to start trouble.

She said before the primary that she would commit her superdelegate vote to the winner of the California primary. Until such time as there is a superdelegate vote taken, however, she is not endorsing. She has a right to take this position.

17. Some of y'all are missing the point -- she can vote how she wants...
I said that. It's her REASONING that I am having a problem with. And I promise you, I would say the same thing if it were the other way around -- that if CA voted for O and she said she would cast her vote for O BECAUSE that's what the state did. I would still say that's not a valid REASON. I can be objective about the process.

Qualification -- she's not ALWAYS a ditz. I usually praise her efforts, but I think she is on this one.

She stated before the election that is how she would have voted.

John Lewis changed his endorsement/vote from Hillary to Obama based on how his constituents voted.

It was his right to do so.

Would you like to insult him in OP?

30. No, You're missing the point.
She is a superdelegate able to make up her mind in whichever fashion she chooses. If you don't like her methods, become a superdelegate and show her how you would do it, but don't come online calling her a ditz. It's not only sexist, it's stupid.

And yes, "Ditz" IS a politically incorrect word. Just so you know, the right wing invented the term "politically incorrect" in order to provide themselves cover for their bigoted comments about "welfare queens" and "faggots".

Good company you're keeping with that.

She said that before Calif even had their primary.

You shouldn't be mad at her. She's not playing games. She was upfront about what she was going to do. If Obama won Calif, then she would vote for him.

21. please don't call Boxer a ditz
she's my junior Senator and over the years has earned my deepest respect, not mention that of millions of other Californians. Just look into her stand against the EPA recently for a taste of her integrity and grit.

Besides that, I respect her position. Her SD choice even goes against my candidate, but she made it in the best of faith based on strong personal principles. She has every right to use her own judgment on how to exercise her SD vote, declared publicly how she would long before the primary, and has stood by that vote even though she's a leading VP candidate for Obama. She's not bullying the rest of the party that they need to do this, but is simply forming her own conclusion----one that I think is noble. She's representing her state. The people who voted for her. how democratic....

24. Well, this is a switch.
The argument that SDs are supposed to vote the way their states voted is an often-heard Obama camp claim. (Or for Congressmen is it their district? Or is it to correspond with the pledged delegate total? I can't keep track; all I know is that Kennedy and Kerry are exempt.) However, I agree with you that SDs are supposed to vote according to their conscience. But of course an SD can make the decision to vote the same as his/her constituents or state or whatever. I only object when they try to spread the fable that all SDs have an obligation to do so.

Politically silly.

I don't get why you're so upset about this. If all the Supers did as Boxer says she'll do, then Obama would clearly get the majority of them. If all the Supers voted for the pledged delegate leader, again he'd get the majority. If they all "voted their conscience", who knows how it'd go? And then there'll be some who go with the popular vote-getter, which could be Clinton at the end of it all if you add in FL/MI (which Supers are perfectly able to do).

I think it's absurd to criticize any of the supers for their vote. I'd criticize them as a group if they overturned the Pledged Delegate total, but I'm not gonna criticize them individually. I'm a bit annoyed that my two senators supported Hillary so early on, but I'm sure they had their reasons and I won't hold it against them. I'm happy that my state's governor supported Obama, but I reserve the right to criticize other things she's done.

Seriously this is a non-issue. And to call someone like Boxer a ditz is.... ditzy.

decision to vote for Clinton. Going with the will of her state is a much better than the race baiting reason than most Clinton supporters are floating. She is justified in supporting Clinton.

We should still demand that the party retool the nominating process; and tell the SDs to take a long walk off a short pier next time around.
