Womens Rights are Human Rights - Hillary Clinton
This is one of the most important speeches on human rights in modern times.

This is a speech that should not only be studied in high schools and colleges, but should be read or heard by everyone on the planet.

Read here:

Its not misogyny to have a different opinion than HRC and to find that she is a flawed candidate and not right for this country.

The reaction you're getting isn't as much to the speech, what it means, or what it meant in the past. It's more to the idea of "and he's got a speech". She can't have it both ways and unfortunately in the heat of the campaign I don't think her supporters can either so it'll be disregarded with the same ease she disregards the speech of others. It isn't fair to others but that's the way things run when tempers and emotions are high.

That said personally I think the campaign has done some damage to womens rights. Prison reform and racial issues are something I deal with more but I've seen the same thing happen there. Racism and sexism are certainly real enough but sometimes we assume when it didn't happen and sometimes it's real enough but not the most important thing to deal with at the moment. Fair or not if we complain too much or often eventually it becomes a boy who cried wolf situation and they stop caring, or worse start giving the complainers a hard time and baiting them. I've seen it happen with racial complaints when people got tired of them and it looked an awful lot like what we're seeing here as well. The accusation just lost power with use, and as they got tired of it they lost patience with the issue in general.

Just need to give it time and let the conflicts of the campaign die out, it'll be back to normal eventually. Here at least, public at large will probably take a bit longer depending on how long this stuff drags out. I don't think it's anti women so much as sick of the issue for the moment.

Is this the one she made in Beijing in 1995. She set those Chinese straight! No problems with them since this "historic" speach.
We aren't having any problems with them and human rights since than. You GO GIRL!

By definition something has to happen to make a speach historic...

FDR's Pearl harbor speach...historic

JFK's inaguration speach...historic

Abe Lincoln's Gettysburg Address...historic

MLK I have a dream...historic.

What the hell happened or what was accomplished here that made this speach historic?

80. No
I had a computer since I was 5. My dad worked for AT&T (which became Lucent) when they were making computers in the early 80s and he got me one. I learned to type before I learned to write :-)

26. good speech, too bad I believe she doesn't want to be pigeon-holed as a female candidate
or something and won't do this type of speech today, choosing to pose with a bunch of generals and military officials to give her a whole 'war hawk' aura....

38. THC, would you please answer this question, I ask of you:
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 07:25 PM by WIllo
Are you honestly unaffected by
1) Hillary's Bosnia lie,
2) her campaign's current financial status
3) her having two important people on her campaign (her husband and Penn) being involved with the Columbian Trade deal

I am not trying to trap you or anything like that.
I sincerely would like to know how you personally, feel about these three things and why.

Thanks for "listening."

48. Yeah. We should all get on our knees and thank her
Thank you, Hillary. You're a true inspiration.

Especially the way you voted like a lemming with all the Republicans and worthless Democrats for the IWR. Maybe one day we can all aspire to be that type of individual that does exactly what everyone else does when faced with a tough decision. Oh sure, you could have read into the subject at the time like others did, *cough* Wellstone, but who's got time for that when you're planning on being president someday!!! Well anyways, I could go on and on about this, like voting for using clusterbombs on civilians, but you've got sniper fire to dodge so I won't waste your time.

Oh by the way, I have friends missing limbs from being in Iraq. Not that you'd care or anything. Anyways, have fun running for president!!!!!

You go girl!

58. I guess the best part
is where she brags about how hard she has worked to help everybody

"Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children and families. Over the past two-and-a-half years, I have had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing women in my own country and around the world.

I have met new mothers in Jojakarta, Indonesia, who come together regularly in their village to discuss nutrition, family planning, and baby care.

I have met working parents in Denmark who talk about the comfort they feel in knowing that their children can be cared for in creative, safe, and nurturing after-school centers.

I have met women in South Africa who helped lead the struggle to end apartheid and are now helping build a new democracy.

I have met with the leading women of the Western Hemisphere who are working every day to promote literacy and better health care for the children of their countries.

I have met women in India and Bangladesh who are taking out small loans to buy milk cows, rickshaws, thread and other materials to create a livelihood for themselves and their families.

I have met doctors and nurses in Belarus and Ukraine who are trying to keep children alive in the aftermath of Chernobyl."

I guess "meeting people" who are struggling to make their country better is almost the same as actually struggling. Just like meeting people who were actually shot at is almost the same as actually getting shot at.

Most of the speech seemed totally obvious, but maybe not to some other cultures. However, I don't agree with the notion that people can have as many kids as they want. That was what lead to China and India's problems in the first place IMO, and allowing it to continue in sort of a laissez-breed is a recipe for disaster.

59. It was an historic event. This of one of many of Hillary's proud accomplishments
et this Conference be our - and the world's - call to action.

And let us heed the call so that we can create a world in which every woman is treated with respect and dignity, every boy and girl is loved and cared for equally, and every family has the hope of a strong and stable future.

Thank you very much.

God's blessings on you, your work and all who will benefit from it.

77. That certainly was a good speech, and I certainly praised her for it, for 13 years now.
I know that a cynical person would say that such speeches are "just words" but to them I would say that words DO matter.
At their best, they move people to action.

Anyone who disputes that ideas - communicated through words, usually - can have a motivating influence on history, should consider this speech, and know that it gave many who heard or read it a little bit of hope to continue in the long struggle for human rights.

Thank you for pointing this out, THC.
And thank you Hillary, for being an advocate for human rights, in the fine tradition of Eleanor Roosevelt and many others.
