This is the song I most think about when I think of Elton John
http://www.eltonography.com/songs/the_last_song.html

Yesterday you came to lift me up
As light as straw and brittle as a bird
Today I weigh less than a shadow on the wall
Just one more whisper of a voice unheard

Tomorrow leave the windows open
As fear grows please hold me in your arms
Won't you help me if you can to shake this anger
I need your gentle hands to keep me calm

`Cause I never thought I'd lose
I only thought I'd win
I never dreamed I'd feel
This fire beneath my skin
I can't believe you love me
I never thought you'd come
I guess I misjudged love
Between a father and his son

Things we never said come together
The hidden truth no longer haunting me
Tonight we touched on the things that were never spoken
That kind of understanding sets me free

end of quote (lyrics by Bernie Taupin)

I still remember the first time I heard this song. I bought the CD when it first came out and listened to it in the car on the way home (I actually had to use a portable CD player to do it). I literally had to pull over and weep I was so moved. Everyday in this forum it is hard not to get more disgusted than the day before. Frankly, if you wonder why so many gay Clinton supporters (actually more Obama opponents) have remained opposed to Obama maybe you need to think about threads like the ones trashing Elton John for daring to put on a concert to support Hillary (just like he did for both Kerry and Gore before her). Elton is by no means perfect (his bizarre friendship with Eminem being testament to that). But to call him hateful and bigotted is beyond the pale. Elton has every right to criticise a country which forbids him from marrying his partner solely due to his sexual orientation. He has every right to try to elect leaders here who would change that policy. He has lived here for decades and paid, I would be willing to bet, more in taxes than the vast majority of DUers (he surely paid more than I). He did a favor for a friend and for the country he has made his home. He doesn't deserve to be trashed.

And it's ki-yi-yippie-yi-yi,
You long hairs are all gonna die,
Our American home was clean til you came,
And the kids still respected the president's name.

And the eagle still flew in the sky,
Hearts filled with national pride,
Then you came along with your drug-crazy songs,
Goddammit, you're all gonna die.

Don't Shoot Me album - about 35 years ago, and I remember the lyrics. That's wacked.

God damn Flemish

17. I loved that song!
I also loved "Elderberry Wine", "Shoulder Holster", "Grow Some Funk of Your Own" and "Island Girl". Sadly, I lost those albums in one of my many moves  It's one of the reasons I can't stand the Flemish...

11. Since you mentioned Elton's friendship with Eminem....
It's probably good to remember that Elton was really pissed at him for a while, given the lyrics of some of Eminem's songs.

A few years before that, Elton was furious with Axl Rose for the line "Immigrants and faggots, they make no sense to me" in the GnR song "One in a Million". Yet just a year or so later, Elton is appearing on stage with GNR, playing piano on "November Rain". And performing a duet with Axl on Bohemian Rhapsody at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7S3vpVDqQgQ

And these are guys who deliberately did something that Elton would be justifiably pissed off about, yet he eventually made up with them.

Obama and his supporters ain't done nothing to Reggie, but at this rate, I expect to see him at the Innagural Ball in January. :)

is one of my favorites..and almost every song on Tumbleweed Connection... I missed the 'trash-fest'..thank goodness. People are insane.

The words I have to say
May well be simple but they're true
Until you give your love
There's nothing more that we can do

Love is the opening door
Love is what we came here for
No one could offer you more
Do you know what I mean
Have your eyes really seen

You say it's very hard
To leave behind the life we knew
But there's no other way
And now it's really up to you

Love is the key we must turn
Truth is the flame we must burn
Freedom the lesson we must learn
Do you know what I mean
Have your eyes really see

19. Bernie Taupin
I wish that Mr. Taupin would get more credit for Elton's success than he does. I know that Elton (only recent years) has given Bernie a lot of credit.

Mr. Taupin is one of the great lyricists of our time. He is more than a poet. He sees things in words that we can only imagine.

One of his lines (and I know I'm getting this wrong) went something like this:

"And I saw a shooting star...it was as if God had struck a match against the ceiling of the heavens."

It doesn't get any better than that. (and I'm an atheist)

25. Indeed, Bernie deserves much of the credit.
Without his words, Elton would have been "......only the piano player". And when they stopped writing together, that's when Elton's music went south.

There's just to many songs that he brings to mind. You mentioned one of my favorites, but there are just too many to pick just one.

28. "Your Song" is the song I always think of first,
probably because it was my favorite on the first Elton John album my mom had when I was a kid. By the time I was in high school, I was a huge fan. I don't know if I have a favorite; I like so many of them.

My senior year in high school, my boyfriend kept "borrowing" my lps, including all of the Elton John, until there weren't any left. I never got them back.

I'd love to have them now.
