Clinton on Obama: 'Pennsylvanians don't need a president who looks down on them'

Hillary Clinton, jumping on Obama's San Francisco comments on the bitterness in small-town Pennsylvania during a speech in Philadelphia just now, hit Obama hard:

Clinton said she'd seen in the media that "my opponent said that the people of Pennsylvania who faced hard times are bitter."

"Well, that’s not my experience," she continued. "As I travel around Pennsylvania, I meet people who are resilient, who are optimistic, who are positive, who are rolling up their sleeves. They’re working hard every day for a better future for themseves and their children."

"Pennsylvanians don’t need a president who looks down on them. They need a president who stands up for them, who fights for them, who works hard for your futures, your jobs, and your families," she said, implicitly casting Obama as an elitist.

I was going to post something on this thread, but you summed it up nicely. Obama spoke the truth, which I guess is dangerous for a politician. That is what makes me bitter. Hillary and McCain are full of shit, but it has worked ever since I was a child so why stop now, huh.

3. Hillary meets LOTS of people who are completely unaware that Clintons protect the Bushes -
they always have and Hillary was set up to continue that protection into the next decade, just as Bill did for Poppy Bush throughout the 90s.

59. her characterization....he wasn't looking down on them
he was explaining why he could understand their actions and feelings and how hard it is to persuade people who have been beaten down by their circumstances. He was speaking the truth that previously only Republicans refused to acknowledge. Now that Hillary has joined the club and is willing to take Obama's frank, honest speech and claim that he is looking down on them. It's one thing to lie, but it is even worse to attack someone for speaking the truth. Obama wants to reach those people...clearly Clinton just wants to manipulate them......Oooooh he's looking down on you...you should vote for me.......I think that you are all really nice. I've worked and lived around people who use that kind of tactic and as disgusting as I find it in private life.....it's even worse in a politician. The most disgusting form of pandering.

I've lived in "small-town America" and Obama is dead on accurate. Most of the people who live in small towns know this too. They're not fools. It's Hillary who's coming across as "looking down," because she apparently doesn't know what life is really like in small towns -- and she is patronizing them.

People who live in small towns know exactly what they're like. Hillary doesn't. Her attempt to create a false reality is patronizing. The people who live there live with these things all day every day. They are not stupid.

was speaking of the things that have happened in the last 40 years, in the time since Hillary bundled herself off to the ivy-covered walls of Wellesley, then on to DC, the governor's mansion in Arkansas, DC again, and the posh suburbs of NYC. Believe it or not, thing have changed in small town America since the '60s.

86. It's the truth
Hazelton started the "no brownie zone" in their little city, and sparked the anti-immigration movement where other cities across the country think it's okay to rat out suspicious looking Latinos. Even when we're here legally for several generations.

Doesn't sound like a lie to me.

She's just talking about creating opportunity and what not. She doesn't provide any of the context you're talking about.

Secondly, I do think that the less opportunity people have for advancement, the more likely they are to put their focus on wedge issues.

saves me hours of painful research. I really appreciate people who are willing to debunk and de-construct Obama's past and future campaign promises with evidentiary proof that will hold up under scrutiny.

The His44.org site is not comprised of vague accusations and innuendo. Casual accusations are not given the consideration and credence as Leftist sources are here, where the uninitiated are pressured into drinking the Kool-Aid from a free flowing tap until they get it right!

70. true
I've only posted here a couple of times, but I take major issue with Hillary's growing reputation as the "populist" candidate who will fight for the people. She is my senator, and her response to Tim Russert when he asked her about all of the jobs that she failed to deliver on for upstate NY was "Well, I was expecting Al Gore to be president." Come on Hillary, seriously? Of course I don't fault the loss of jobs entirely on her since the economy sucks everywhere, but couldn't she have come up with a better response than that? I also just saw the clip that has been referenced on this board from earlier today, where Hillary laughs when asked about her husband lobbying for the Colombia free trade deal. This would have been an opportune time for her to make a strong statement on the difference between her husband's policies, and her own policies. But she truly seemed at a loss for words, as if she didn't expect for anyone to ever ask her that. I keep trying to write comments replying to the article on the Huffington post that has caused this latest controversy (with some compliments, and some criticism of the article). However, my posts are not getting posted. Meanwhile, the posters who reply to every single article on the Huffington Post with "Obama has an anti-American wife and pastor" get their comments posted. It's frustrating.

Instead of educating, she chooses pandering.

54. Calm Down, She is doing that on her own.
Obama has won many states by being steady and positive. While I was the same way after Ohio. Obama kept to the steady pace and he won 2 more states.

I feel that he is going to take it within 10 percent in PA and in later states he will also do well. Clinton will eventually exit so no need for Obama to go negative.

I merely remarked I had never heard that before. Having been born and raised in NYC and lived there for 50 years, I wondered what something so opposite to my experience could mean. Your reaction is even odder than your initial claim. Rather than explain what you meant, you turned immediately insulting.

Give me a break, Clinton. Whether it's you, Obama, or McCain, we're going to have an elite and, to some degree, "out of touch" President. "Ordinary folks" don't win the presidency. Certainly there's a difference between Democratic and Republican presidents in terms of what they support and the degree to which it helps those just trying to get by, but to act as if you're some sort of "regular" American in contrast to Obama just reeks of insincere pandering. But oh well, whatever works for you...

I'm on my way to PA right now, let's see how this plays out over there among the "bitter & bigoted" populace.

112. If you have the true context of the statement, you are not IGNORANT of the facts
The point is, and I think you know as much, that she's relying on people to be IGNORANT of what Obama was really saying. "Talk down"? That's something you say to appeal to someone who already holds a view of 'uppity snobs'.

This needs to come back and bite her hard. Like NAFTA-and-$800,000-from-Colombia hard.

Obama needs to tell those same people for whom she's trying to gin up the elitist hate that SHE is one of the people who was all for the agreement that yanked their jobs right out from under them. Then she can laugh it off, throw her hands in the air, tell us she doesn't know what to say to that and ask about how many angels are dancing on the head of that particular pin.

they don't need a president who laughs at them after taking bribes for trade deals. They don't need a president who is a COMPULSIVE BOLD-FACE LIAR SUCH AS YOURSELF. Do us all a favor and GO AWAY. I spent the latter part of the 90s defending you and your husband. Don't destroy what respect I have left for his presidency/your coattails.

139. AMERICANS don't need a president who looks down on them and we have

seen how Barack and Michelle Obama look down on the rest of America.

151. So Hillary Supporters are not bitter? Do you deny it because Obama said it
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 10:48 PM by WIllo
and Hillary didn't agree?
Would you suddenly feel rich if Hillary said the ecomony was now fine?
And wealthy if Obama disagreed?

Sheesh, to thine ownself be true some times.

We do not need you! You probably won't even bother to look down when you have to step over us, after selling off what's left of our country to the highest bidder.

155. It is now so painfully obvious to anyone with their eyes open!!
Hillary wants to destroy Obamas chances to win in the GE.She wants another shot at the nomination in 2012 and is willing to do the republicans work for them to insure she has that opportunity.

158. Sounds exactly like something George Bush would say
"my opponent said that the people of Pennsylvania who faced hard times are bitter. Well, that’s not my experience. As I travel around Pennsylvania, I meet people who are resilient, who are optimistic, who are positive, who are rolling up their sleeves. They’re working hard every day for a better future for themseves and their children."
