had he said "it's no surprise they're turning to drugs" they'd say he showed sympathy for drug use
they would have slammed him for not being sufficiently anti-drugs.

but somehow, "it's not surprise ... they to religion" supposedly shows the exact opposite, it supposedly insults religion and those who turn to it, rather than showing sympathy and understanding for it and those who turn to it.

you will notice i substituted "turn" for obama's "cling". that's the word i would have chosen, and i agree that "cling" was an "inartful" choice, to borrow a term some other posters have been using. but that particular word choice is a molehill, not a mountain.

the key point, which obama keep coming back to, is that the good jobs left pennsylvania decades ago and he's sympathetic and it's about time someone in washington did something about it. that message matters quite a lot more than a minor point of diction.

criticizing a fellow democrat, on the other hand, with terms like "limousine liberal" and "elitist" and "condescending" merely plays right into mccain's hands. THIS IS NOT A STEREOTYPE THEY PICKED OUT TO APPLY ONLY TO OBAMA. IT'S A STEREOTYPE THEY'VE CONSISTENTLY BEEN APPLYING TO **ALL** DEMOCRATS FOR EONS AND IT WILL COME BACK TO BITE HILLARY IN THE EVENT SHE GET THE NOMINATION.
