I read that Obama exposed the right's "Southern strategy" and pol.discourse of the late 20th Century
is it really true???

Oh yes I see that it is

"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them.

"And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Speak it. Another golden move by him and his campaign :patriot:

4. What I find amazing
is that we here on DU have been speaking this truth for years here. Now that some politician is speaking truth to sour, some are trying to use it as a bad thing. They've become everything we've been supposedly fighting for.

5. Dean tried to start a dialogue. He was attacked instead of supported.
He may not have been the one to do it....but he got much support from those who took time to understand.

I guess they want to make sure Obama isn't successful either.

Dean makes racial political history.

Quite a complimentary and appreciative article from the Black Commentator.

Also a good column by Jesse Jackson Jr. at Common Dreams.

Dean's New Southern Strategy: Blacks and Whites Together--Focused on Education and Healthcare

So the ones who needed to understand...understood. It was his fellow candidates who openly humiliated him for it. And the media.

In our society every word must be perfect, or you get crucified or steamrolled.

7. Obama must be sure that he either has the nomination or doesn't to air this in public
also the Chamber of Commerce will not come gunning for him-this is "populist" enough for them the release their $60 Million and become a visible force again. IMHO

8. I strongly agree--that's an excellent point.
I remember Dean's comments and applauded them. He was right. There is a serious class divide in this country, and it was high time to acknowledge it. Instead, Dean's opponents racebaited him. "OMG!! He wants to embrace the KKK!!!," they screamed!

I think that Obama's analysis is correct, but his phrasing is problematic, as is the setting: a gathering of millionaires in the Getty Mansion. It sounds too much like a 19th century anthropologist lecturing gentleman scholars on some primitive culture he has been studying. But Obama is right about the problem and is in a unique position to do something about it, if he can keep from pushing all those "elitist" buttons that the Right has kept so sensitive.

9. There's a soundtrack for this mess we've been watching
Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" complements this dust up quite well.
