26. No we aren't. I would describe us as varying shades of purple.

Some areas are very red; but even here in my rural small-town, we sent dems to the state house and senate in 06, we have dems on the town council and in county positions. On a state-wide level, we have a democratic governor and other state offices. We have several congressional members who are dems.
One of those democrats, by the way, is Dale Earnhardt Jr. - and some of what you like to call 'yard art' is by some of the finest artists in the country who like living in NC, whether it is at the well known Seagrove pottery area, in the communities in and around Asheville or in the coastal areas around Wilmington or the Outer Banks.

And pickup trucks are a necessity to many of us - if you live in a rural area, and/or you're a farmer, you can't do without one. Mine was driven a total of 700 miles last year - and 800 the year before. It sits in the garage 99% of the time, because it's a gas hog and I have a Civic to drive on a daily basis, but when I have to haul something I have to have it.

We don't use outhouses anymore either. We even have e-lectricity, and satellite teevee and runnin' water!

This is VERY good news. I think Obama can do well here. I like that he is making an effort in every state. With our primary actually having meaning this time, it has generated more interest earlier than I've seen before.

in 2004. Asheville is Dem. Durham is Dem. Raleigh is leaning Dem. NC demographics have been changing
for years.

But--don't think that shenanigans aren't possible. The polls in 2004 showed Kerry/Edwards pulling within 5% of Bush/Cheney a week before the election--and somehow--someway--the end result seemed to almost exactly match the difference in 2000--of about 13%. WTF??

It's a very real possibility he'll win in NC. It would be funny if the military towns on the east tip it for Obama (I'm reading he has more military support than the other two candidates).

Under 8 points, as opposed to victory. It's remarkable that posters prefer to put more weight into a snapshot state poll as opposed to long term known partisanship of the states, at presidential level.

North Carolina was about 9 points more Republican than the nation as a whole, in both '00 and '04. Edwards was worth about 3 to 3.5 points for Kerry in North Carolina so you factor that into the equation. A VP is historically worth about that much in his home state, if it's a high populated state.

You don't overcome a 9 point tilt in one cycle. Obama would have to win nationally in a landslide, something like 54% of the vote, for North Carolina to slide along.

General elections are hardly like primaries, when like-minding people can suddenly agree and a tidal shift occurs. That's always the danger, failing to differentiate changing playing fields. Obama supporters are falling into the predictable trap of overstating his general election tug, in North Carolina and elsewhere.
