Hillary's ad: It's called an election, folks.
Did you know that many Pennsylvanians actually didn't appreciate Obama's remarks? If you understand the situation well enough to know that the answer is a resounding "yes," then you'll understand why they wouldn't see Hillary Clinton's ad as "despicable" or "below the belt." Hillary Clinton is running for office - remember? Is she not permitted to point out Obama's mistakes? Is Obama immune from negative advertising? It's a fucking election, folks. This is what happens in elections, and I have seen more disgusting ads - stuff that actually attacks a person's personal life (in case you don't recall those) - that go far beyond this. His remarks were damaging to him in Pennsylvania's primary. HE DID IT TO HIMSELF.

Oh - btw. I understand Jon Stewart has an issue with Hillary Clinton drinking with Pennsylvanians. Apparently she was "pledging" not campaigning. Yeah, I know. When a female politician grabs a glass of beer and a shot of Crown Royal, she's CRAZY! What was she thinking? I mean, it's almost like she's doing what every other male politician does when he campaigns. Amazing! Jon - you're typically spot-on, but you really nailed it on this one. :sarcasm:

Okay... that's my rant. Fire away. :nuke:

And here's some popcorn for bystanders.

Toodles,

~Writer~

1. I did think Stewart's rant on Hillary's whiskey shot was a little weird.
Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 10:59 AM by SteppingRazor
Look, when politicians are at a bar, they have a drink. When they're at a deli, they have a sandwich. When they're around babies, they kiss them. Basically, they do their best to fit in. It's what they do. I certainly don't begrudge Hillary that. Hell, I thought it was kinda cool -- much better than voting for an ex-alcoholic teetotaler because he seems like a guy you'd like to have a beer with. :eyes:

That said, I did appreciate Stewart's rant on how having a president who's "elite" is not a bad thing. As I quoted in another thread a couple minutes ago, "Not only do I want an elite president, I want someone who's embarrassingly superior to me." Amen.

4. Agreed on the "elite" rant. I want a president who can think!
Although in my mind there's a difference between "elite" and "elitist."

10. Sure, there is.
But if you want the president -- and indeed, all the leaders of this nation -- to be our best and brightest, doesn't that make you an elitist? I don't think it's bad to want our leaders to be "embarrassingly superior to me." This tendency to carp on that and tag it as "elitist" in a pejorative sense is just dumb anti-intellectualism. The right wing is rife with demagogues decrying our politicians with words like, "They think they're smarter than you!"

My response would be, "Yeah, I certainly hope so!"

Of course, in my opinion, however the primaries pan out, we'll have a great candidate, so for me, this is all just rhetorical argument. I'm happy with either Clinton or Obama.

15. Maybe "snobbish" is a better word?
If "elitist" isn't the proper diction for this, then what word can be used to describe a person who looks down on others?

EITHER of these candidates will be "embarrassingly superior" to all of us, agreed.

20. That's certainly true.
It's a bad idea for any candidate to talk down to the electorate.

2. "It's an election" means bad behavior season is open?
That is even worse!

No wonder we are disillusioned about our politicians...

I suggest we bookmark this thread for the next time Obama hits hard at Hillary. I guarantee you half those in this thread nodding their heads at this "rant" will be screaming bloody murder.

5. Looks like you're just pulling stuff out of thin air.
In the SUSA poll he's gained two and she's lost two, and nothings changed in the new Quinnipiac poll.

And you're right, it's an election. Obama will smash back at hills. He already is. New ads calling her on her lobbying ties and telling folks she's corporate *****. In polite language of course.

We'll see if his remarks damage him in PA, but your post is the same old hillarian shit- wishful thinking and excuses for poor victim hillary dearest.

9. You realize you contradicted yourself in your OP don't you?
The lowblow ad about Obama was just the hazards of an election but John Stewart mocking Her Majesty on TDS is an OUTRAGE! I don't even see how it's sexist. Don't men pledge into fraternities?

13. It's fascinating that the Bill lies about Hillary lies went off the headlines...some odd timing...
Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 11:22 AM by zulchzulu
Now that the dust has settled, even uber Hillary pimp Ed Rendell has admitted the the "bittergate" comments will only matter a point or two.

What Obama "did to himself" was talk about the absolute reality of the rural voters in many parts of this country embracing the "God, Guns and Gays" mentality to offset their lack of a manufacturing base due to NAFTA and China MFN trade bills. Add that Walmart has destroyed the Mom and Pop businesses that used to line the streets of these rural towns.

Take a drive to rural towns across America and see for yourself. Tell me people aren't bitter. Yes, they are resiliant. Yes, they are strong, good people. Obama never said they weren't. Oddly though, they blame the wrong people for their woes.

It's politicians like the Clintons who supported, signed and shoved NAFTA and China MFN down these people's throats. They've sent their sons and daughters off to unneeded, dumb wars.

Follow the money.

17. I learned the hard way to not knock my relatives for hunting and/or religious views.
Learning that has saved a lot of pointless arguing. It looks to me, at the most basic level, that Sen. Obama is learning that lesson now.

He painted this bullseye on himself.

24. The main problem is her RW framing of the issue.
She called Obama an elitist (while carefully emphasizing the "San Francisco" part), a label that the right wing has consistently been attaching to us.

The fact that McCain essentially echoed Hillary (or vice versa) is a bit troubling.
