Obama is a snob - a BIG snob!

FROM: http://www.slate.com/id/2188963/

Big Snob or Little Snob?
Trying to figure out what Barack Obama was trying to say.
By John Dickerson
Posted Monday, April 14, 2008, at 6:47 PM ET

There are so many problems with Barack Obama's comments about small-town America, it's hard to know where to begin. Lots of my colleagues have shouldered their pickaxes and chipped out smart deconstructions, with which I largely agree. The only open field left is trying to defend Obama's remarks. It is a hard trick to pull off. You have to be Houdini to get out of this quote describing the behavior of people who live in small towns:

t's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

It's a triple whammy. Obama claims to speak for people, something folks don't like, whether they live in small towns or large ones. He touches on some of the most explosive issues in politics—religion, guns, race, and immigration—where voters tend to have deep-seated views. He then says something really tone-deaf, ascribing suspect reasoning to choices people have made about core parts of their daily lives.

Obama has not helped himself in his efforts at damage control. First, he said he was just telling the truth, but edited the truth he was telling. People are "bitter" because they've been let down by previous administrations, he said; his campaign seeks to take up their cause. This ignored the incendiary religion, guns, and xenophobia portions of his remarks.

Obama then argued that he was really complimenting small-town voters. At the CNN Compassion Forum Sunday night, he said, "you know, Scripture talks about clinging to what's good." This works only if you close your eyes to the rest of Obama's original sentence, since surely he wasn't saying it's a good thing to cling to xenophobia and racism. Which is to say it doesn't work at all. Obama also admitted that he didn't choose his words carefully when he spoke about small-town values in San Francisco. But this was more than a slip—it was an extended riff.

Since Obama's spin for himself isn't working so well, let's try to figure out if there were benign sentiments he may have been trying to express that just got mangled in translation. This isn't a trivial pursuit. Obama is offering voters his talent for empathy. But if he's going to bring the country together, he can't go pissing off huge swathes of it. He says the key to enacting the policies he thinks will help blue-collar whites is the rallying of the nation behind his candidacy. How can small-town regular folk rally around someone they don't trust?

(rest of Slate article at link above).

I've heard enough to know this: HE CAN'T WIN SMALL-TOWN USA AGAINST A FORMER POW AND WAR HERO!

But - Hillary can!

Its not too late,

- vote HRC in '08!!

12. Good try, but Obama brought race into this discussion all by his lonesome.
You can continue to try, of course; but, you cannot dig him out of this hole. To be honest, though, this did come off as "uppity" whatever the speaker's race. However, the word used to describe what he said, was "elitist".

35. She has no experience.
Not next to McCain. McCain has decades on her.

As far as trust, that's laughable. All John McCain (who, unlike Hillary, has actually been shot at) has to do is show her Bosnia footage over and over again.

As far as a verifiable history, there is no historical fact that is better documented than the fact that half of the country absolutely loathes her and would relish the opportunity to vote against her. Against McCain, she will not get a single Republican vote and she sure as hell won't get a single independent vote.

I will, however, concede that if Hillary Clinton were running against Dick Cheney, she might win.

Poll Shows Erosion Of Trust in Clinton

By Anne E. Kornblut and Jon Cohen
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, April 16, 2008; Page A06

-snip

Clinton is viewed as "honest and trustworthy" by just 39 percent of Americans, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, compared with 52 percent in May 2006. Nearly six in 10 said in the new poll that she is not honest and trustworthy. And now, compared with Obama, Clinton has a deep trust deficit among Democrats, trailing him by 23 points as the more honest, an area on which she once led both Obama and John Edwards.

37. In his first paragraph he doesn't disclose the full text of what Barack said
Dickerson then continues to spin this as some form of journalistic nonsense. Dickerson did not grow up in a small town, so I don't think he knows what small towns think. Barack on the other hand has been traveling around to these small towns and has probably heard more stories about the frustrations those people have to deal with on a daily basis. Barack was also talking about people voting on wedge issues, instead of real issues because they know Washington insiders won't do anything to help their situations.

Its not too late To WHIP IT, WHIP IT GOOD tip of the hat to DEVO.

51. I actually think that this is Obama's biggest weakness as a Dem candidate...
...which is strange, because he (along with Bill Clinton) is one of the poorest people in decades to have a chance to win the presidency. I think it has to do with his aura, speaking style, and physical appearance -- which are very ivy league, smart and professorial.

I don't think the "bitterness" story really is evidence of snobbery or elitism, but I'm certain that the Clinton campaign has done some focus group studies and have identified this as a weakness, and are now trying to fit any square peg story they can find into the round of hole of "elitism."

52. Wow. The fact is that Hillary , after bush, is the most hated politician in the US
and now thanks to her despicable, shit slinging, swiftboating camapign against Obama , she is not only hated by Republicans and Independents , she is also hated my a larger percentage of Democrats. Hillary was never electable and now she her rovian tactics have made it almost certain that she will never be elected to any office.

62. She was just BOOED by Union workers in small town PA for bringing up the bitter comment.
Obama was cheered by the same crowd. I hate to tell you this, but he is relating better to rust belt towns than Hill is and there is video-taped BOOING evidence to prove it.

64. True. The worst elitism comes from unemployed union workers.
They certainly don't speak for small town PA.

:Sarcasm:
