I played football and wrestling and baseball in junior high school and high school in a small town. I was an offensive lineman and linebacker in football. I grew up skeet shooting and duck hunting and I could load and fire a rifle from the time I was a boy. I went to church every Sunday. But I'm and elitist and I'm for Barack Obama.
I worked as a janitor in my high school during the summers right through college. I went to the local branch of the state university because the tuition was cheap and I could live at home. But I'm an elitist and I'm for Barack Obama.
When I graduated I couldn't get a job because the economy sucked and the unemployment rate much higher than it is now. I didn't own a car and I just took the bus. I lived with a bunch of roommates. Sometimes I washed my hair with a bar of ivory soap and skipped meals when the money wasn't there. But I'm an elitist and I'm for Barack Obama.
Then I got a job where I worked between twelve and sixteen hours a day without overtime or health care or any other benefits. I got canned because one day I just couldn't work more than twelve hours and I went home at 9 p.m. But I'm an elitist and I'm for Barack Obama.
A few months after I got fired, I got a severe infection and I refused to go to the doctor because I had no money. Finally, my girlfriend made me go and the doctor saw me and said, "I'm admitting you" and I pleaded with him not to put me in the hospital because I had no insurance and couldn't pay for it. My fever was 105 and I was turning yellow and when I got there they packed me in ice. I was in hospital for almost two months - I lived what Krugman cries about. But I'm an elitist and I'm for Barack Obama.
I have a job where I help ordinary people every day and I happily sacrifice tens of thousands of dollars a year to do it. Because of that almost all of my colleagues make more money than me - some even slyly ridicule me for it. I'm educated. I like good food and wine. I exercise religiously and find thinking sexy. I love books and big cities and nice places.
Many of us have stories like this one - many others are certainly far more interesting than mine. But to the Hillary Clintons, Tucker Carlsons, William Kristols, David Brooks' and others like them - we're "elitist" and we're for Barack Obama and he's going to be elected President. Get used to living with it.
