88. Doubt if that's anything more than Tapper trying to start a meme
Tapper seems, of late, to be trying to make a name for himself, trying to break into the next level of faux journalism... the TV pundit shows... where opinion and name calling count for more than objectivity, but where loads of cash can be made by anyone willing to leave their journalism creds at the door.

ps: Have you ever considered frisbee disc golf? 90% younger folks, mostly in shape guys and there are plenty of courses in our area to include one in Oly frequented by students from Evergreen.
The downside: true disc golfer fanatics tend to put disc golf fairly high on their agenda list...generally higher than their S.O.s would prefer.

6. I think I may have said the same thing if I were her
let em go, and keep on keeping on. This is just a reverse "bittergate" and about as dumb.

I don't care if she said "screw em" and I don't care if Obama said people are frustrated/bitter in their lives.

I wish this was over, I'm getting sick of it.

This is all the result of the party fixers arranging Super Tuesday. When 20 odd states all moved their primaries up to February 5, it left this anomolous six week gap between the Mississippi and Pennsylvania primaries. With no actual election returns to provide actual "news" to change the subject every week or so, the media have endless hours of screen time to fill with shuck and jive served up Barack and Hillary's respective covens of media wizards. It is all worthless crap -- Ferrarro, Wright, Tuzla, Bitterness and now, maybe, Screw Em. Stupid, worthless crap.

Our democracy was never all that pristine and nostalgia for the Good Old Days is a notoriously stupid game to play, but I can not remember any other election season playing out in such a trivial fashion. Sure, the Gore sighs and wardrobe choices of 2000 offer a precedent for this season -- but we are only in mid April and look at how much of this garbage was floated down the main stream so far.

It seems to me that the seriousness of our national problems regarding two indecisive wars and the cratering credit markets is so depressing to contemplate that, collectively, the performers and the audience all tacitly agree to stay focused exclusively on Stupid Shit.

It is a really weird season in America.

I know that blogs aren't "real news" but don't tell me that nobody in Pennsylvania has heard this story yet.

The word's spreading. Eventually, the news is gonna look bad for being scooped (again) by the blogs and they're gonna have to cover this.

Think Olbermann will cover this? If this gets top billing tonight or tomorrow night, she's gonna get eaten alive.

46. Ben Smith is reporting that somebody else is backing the story up.
Wolfe's version

My own judgment on the newsiness of Clinton's reported 1995 quote aside (and thanks for all the comments!), the religion scholar Alan Wolfe just wrote up his own account of the meeting, which me remembers the same way:

“Screw ‘em” was the term of art she directed--shall I say bitterly?--against white working-class Southerners. Harry Boyte, who was there, has also chimed in, pointing out, along with Barber, that Bill, by contrast, talked about the need to reach out to them.

A lot of people compare Barack Obama to Bobby Kennedy. To me, he most resembles Bill Clinton, at least the Bill Clinton I knew then.

73. Eric - that's a good point
just like Obama spoke a truth in an inartful way, Clinton may have been expressing a legit opinion, but in an inartful way.

However, her opinion on reaching out to traditionally repub voters seems to have evolved since then. This could be a great opportunity for her to explain how her thinking has changed in the past decade and why.

Is she up to the task? Can she turn a negative into a positive like Obama has demonstrated that he can. It will be critical in the GE.

54. Obama could very easily bring this up while taking the high road
Edited on Wed Apr-16-08 06:21 PM by nuncvendetta
After Hillary inevitably bashes him for the "bitter" stuff, all he needs to do is say, "well Hillary, apparently in the 90s you once said _________ about Southern whites," but the fact of the matter is that I realize that people sometimes misspeak about stuff and am I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt on it because you obviously don't hold this view. I only ask that we be professional and courteous enough to not assume the worst in each other whatever chance we get.

This 1) makes people aware that she is somewhat hypocritical and 2) contrasts her opportunism with his reasonable forgiveness and coolheadedness. High road while dishing the eye-for-an-eye dirt at the same time!

60. She won't want to touch bitter-gate tonight with this looming over her

She is totally between a rock and a hard place. If bitter-gate is brought up, she now must play it down which will make her look weak. If she runs with it then screw-gate will blow up in her face with the power of an atom bomb!

65. Okay, this seems like really small potatoes.
This was 14 years ago. Who cares? Man, if I ever needed a reminded to never run for President so that even two words I uttered over a decade ago wouldn't be regurgitated by a sensationalist media...

So says this Obama supporter.

peep about McCain, but anything and everything either Obama or Clinton says or does is gone over like CSI Miami at a fucking crime scene. Fuck them!

Who the fuck do you think coined the term "kitchen sink strategy?"

It was the scummy, desperate Clinton campaign, genius.

90. Hillary's shortsighted attacks
She and Bill have both made comments echoing Barack, so all this does now is hurt the entire Democratic/liberal movement.
