For those who didn't see, the debate in a nutshell
Mod: Senator Clinton, how do you feel about Iraq?
Hillary: I feel we should leave.

Mod: Senator Obama, why do you hate America?
Obama: I love America, it's been good to me.

Mod: Senator Clinton, do you feel that poor people should have more money?
Hillary: Absolutely

Mod: Sen. Obama, when was the last time you and Reverend Wright plotted to blow up an Embassy?
Obama: Can't we just talk about the issues instead of this tabloid stuff?

Mod: Senator Clinton, what is your kitten agenda
Hillary: I feel kittens are soft and fluffy and should be cared for.

Mod: Senator Obama, someone you went to grade school with was arrested 8 years ago for kicking a kitten. Why do you hate kittens?
Obama: How is this relevant at all?

Mod: Senator Clinton, tell us exactly how brave you were in overcoming your husband's adultery?
Hillary: i was very brave. God helped me.

Mod: Senator Obama, it's all over the internet that you are an evil Muslim elitist terrorist. Why are you an evil Muslim elitist terrorist?
Obama: I'm not. And weren't you just asking me about my CHRISTIAN pastor?
Mod: The one you blow up embassies with?
Obama: What? Are you serious.

Mod: We have to take a commercial. Senator Clinton, we realize that we haven't paid enough attention to you and we deeply apologize.
Hillary: Quite alright.

2. well since the primary focus of the debate was about flag pins you should add

Mod: Senator Obama It is obvious that you don't love America like a real American because you refuse to wear a flag on your lapel so why are you wearing one now?

Obama: I chose to show my patriotism by working for a better country, carrying for vets and getting our men home.

157. nonsense. Millions of American voters care about the flag pin controversy
And no, I am NOT being sarcastic. Voters by and large are mindless slugs, obsessed with gossip and trivialities, and don't have a clue about policy. Thats why the flag pin question looks stupid to anyone on DU, but is relevant to the millions of idiot voters out there who vastly outnumber us, and pick the President.

It just has all been to much.

seems any msm news outlet is producing " shitty right-wing tabloid garbage" when it doesn't coddle Obama. When it attacks HRC though, Obamaniacs are "in love" with the msm. Like spoiled children, Obamaniacs want everything their way. If they don't get it, they throw a, no, I won't say it, it's just too fucking ironic. Thanks.

65. It is easy to stereotype
Edited on Thu Apr-17-08 07:03 AM by ExPatLeftist
For example, implying that all "Obamaniacs" think the same things (which seem to be basically some crap that you made up that you assume "they" think), or that all Mexicans are illegal aliens. Just two examples of stereotyping.

Yeah, stereotyping (rather than realizing that people are individuals though they may share a choice of candidate, shoe-size, etc.) is certainly the easy way to go. That is why it is so popular on preschool playgrounds.

And back on topic, are you defending this as a quality debate?

92. I can't give you an unbiased answer on who "won"
...as I am an Obama supporter, though I try to not get caught up in the gotcha politics and endless squabble.

For the structure of the debate itself, however, as a former member of my college debate team and Logic major (for a time), I will say that that was not a debate at all. It did not follow any of the standard rules or standards of an actual debate. This is nothing new - political "debates" have not been real debates for years. But this one was particularly egregious. From a purely debate standpoint, it was a joke. From the standpoint of media coverage, same old crap - focus on soundbites and squabbling rather than issues.

I would give this debate an F.

123. only half was worth watching
The first half was all "gotcha" and I was very disappointed in ABC. The questions were designed to entice Hillary to attack and to try and get Obama to make a gaff. I think Hillary showed restraint, but the Ayers stuff was below the belt and I think Obama didn't help himself much with his hemming and hawing answers. However, this is good for Obama because the questions will keep coming up in future debates with McCain, and the right-wing 529's will eat this stuff up. Unfortunate, but true, and Obama should use this debate as an example of how NOT to address these "gotcha" questions. Frankly I don't give a rats ass about Wright, Ayers or Bosnia. But, and I've said this all along, the reason I don't fully support Obama (if he gets the nod I will vote for him) is because there is this ill-informed notion that he is some kind of "new" politician. He isn't, he came up in Chicago politics, some of the most corrupt in the US. He knows how to play the game and thus far has played it well, but he is not without his skeletons and they could sink him in the GE. Last night he was clearly thrown by the questions in the first half and he should have been prepared for them, they will keep coming.

However, when it comes to substance, Hillary won the second part of the debate, period. She had a much better grasp of the housing crisis and went directly at the repubs for not doing more sooner. By the time Obama or Clinton take the oath of office, it will be too late for the vast majority of home owners. Obama didn't make much sense to me on his economic answer or capital gains or social security, he was all over the map. Of course we have to replenish the social security funds (duh), and it ain't gonna be easy. He admonished the 1983 deal to save social security because it raised the retirement age. I'm sorry but that was a GOOD idea, we are living longer and the hardest working country in the world is getting a little spoiled. Bipartisan compromise is needed on social security and everyone will have to make sacrifices in order to save the system. Of course, most republicans don't really want to save the system, they have been out to bankrupt it all along, and they may have succeeded.

Hillary acknowledged the elephant in the room which is that what she does on taxes depends on the war and the deficit. We have to get back to some fiscal responsibility and she pointed out the Bush has not asked us to pay for the war. I don't mind be reminded of the economy we had it the 90's, it was a good one. And frankly, we may have all pay more taxes in order to get out of this mess. But, it seems to me that the targeted tax cuts and tax increases (middle class vs upper income) like we had in the 90's are the way to go, not tax cuts for the rich. I just didn't get a clear answer from Obama on taxes, revenue and the deficit.

On the oil crisis again Clinton was spot on. She basically said she might consider McCain's proposal of a moratorium on gas taxes to provide some relief, not so we can go on vacation, but so we could get to work over the summer. And she would off set the revenue loss with a windfall profits tax while also promising to use the tools of the justice dept to go after the oil companies. Of course, again no candidate will be in office in time to really make a difference in the next year. Either candidate will need a filibuster proof majority in congress to pass a windfall profits tax. I did like Obama citing that we need a Manhattan style commitment to ending our dependence on oil. But again, and I grow tired of him telling me what I already know, duh we have to raise fuel economy standards and duh we have to do something (if possible) about China. What he should have said is if we lead the world will follow, if we create innovative solutions (especially if those solutions generate a profit for wall street), then we have a chance of leading the rest of the world out of its dependence on oil. What neither pointed out is none of this is in the best interest of the Middle East and something has to be done to transform those economies or we are screwed.

Both waffled on the gun issue, but what politician (other than ultra-left or utra-right) doesn't? It would be political suicide in PA to completely support the DC gun ban. I really liked Hillary's notion that one size will not fit all and one federal law will not solve the problem. Cities must have the tools they see fit to fight the problem and law abiding gun owners shouldn't be punished. And of course, re-instate the assault weapons ban and put more police on the streets (a duh moment for Hillary).

On using former presidents Obama was an idiot. Really, GHWB foreign policy!! Lets see the gulf war was a joke, and we did it to bail out his buddies in Kuwiat. Prez Clinton managed to tame Bosnia without a single soldier killed. Let's see, who had the better foreign policy? Hillary is correct in saying how useful using her husband and GHWB for humanitarian missions, but not so much for critical foreign diplomacy. This is again another thing that drives me nuts about Obama, he won't give credit where credit is due to the Clinton presidency. It wasn't perfect, but it was a damn sight better than Reagan, Bush Sr or Bush Jr. hand down.

Lastly, on the super delegates. This is,despite what Obama supporters think, a very close election. If you were to include FL and MI, it would be tighter. Neither candidate will get the required number of delegates before the election and the popular vote depends on FL, MI and how Hillary does in the remaining contests. Obama clearly doesn't have the debate skills Hillary has (longer experience in the Senate probably helped her), and frankly I'm worried he would be eaten alive by McCain (not on rhetorical skills, but on pure debate points). He hasn't been fully vetted and that WILL be an issue. On the other hand he has clearly brought new voters into the process (not unnecessarily informed voters, but enthusiastic). All this talk about Obama supporters not voting for Hillary and visa-versa is INSANE. Get a grip people. Let the process play out, please, and come together when we have a nominee. IT is our only hope. I think Obama will win, but I think it will in part be because of media bias. The MSM has clearly decided who they want, period. The spin to day is indicative of this..."Hillary pounds Obama", "Obama unfairly attacked" etc. etc. Not one major news outlet has run experts of the second half of the debate, just the "gotcha" garbage, pathetic. A combined ticket would be the best option, after all it is what the constitution laid out, so there must be some merit to the idea! The super delegates should make up their mind at the convention and then make peace. Most on DU (both supporters) should chill out. Of course that is the problem with the new voters, they generally don't know history, politics or have a clue how the game is played.

Personally, I'm not optimistic. Say hello to President McCain, and I'll be moving to to Canada before McLame can send my sons to war.

And welcome to DU - I mean it, not too many here are willing to take the time to really explain their thoughts.

While I disagree with some of what you say (Hillary's chances of victory (= a snowball in hell, IMO ;)) among other things), then I am sure that we can agree to disagree. I think that the debate itself was a farce and should not even be called a debate, but that is not due to any bias (which existed still, IMO) rather due to the US political system having forgotten some time ago what a debate even is. That was not one. (I have a longer rant about that in a post in this thread, and others).

Regarding voters that are saying that they will "NEVER" vote for the other contender, I am sure that at least 90% of the "opponents" here will - next November. Amazing how things change quickly, and there is a lot of knee-jerk BS going on here that will change shortly after the selection is made.

I hope you are wrong about President McCain, but it is a fear I hold as well. Personally, I think that the longer the primary drags out, the more likely it will be that we end up with President McCain. I almost said that I have faith in the American people to not elect him, but my faith in the US has been broken by American voters far too often lately.

Luckily, I will not need to leave regardless of the result - I took my chance to get the hell out of the US some time ago. Politics was part of the reason (IMO the US is nearly irrevocably damaged in many areas - in a fundamental way that transcends party). But it was not due to any particular president - Clinton was the prez when I left, and I liked him OK, but the system is screwed, as are many prevalent American attitudes about the world.

167. thanks
Thanks for the welcome, again...I try not to be nasty, it gets us nowhere.

I agree that Hillary's chances are slim to none and I'm pessimistic that either on their own can beat McLame. Most of the debates have been terrible, IMHO. We should have REAL debates: pick a major topic and follow debate rules and hash it out, none of this tabloid BS with egocentric "moderators". However, I believe the MSM have given Obama a pass on his past and his associations. This will be a topic for the GE. But, for me it isn't that BS that will make up my mind, it is specifics on how to fix the problems in the country. 'Cause, like I said all politicians have skeletons. I think Hillary had the edge on specifics and a better grasp of issues last night (and in general). But, my chance to vote for her in a caucus are gone (I'm in Wyoming and I was in Seattle during our caucus). So, I just watch the circus unfold. However, I don't think it is bad for the party. Obama needs this vetting, obviously more that I thought after his performance last night!

I hope your right, that people will come together. I've been a lurker here for a long time, I really only joined in and started posting to vent my frustration after Biden dropped out of the race (gawd I miss his debate performances). But, it has gotten nasty around here, no respect, no real discussion. Dems have a bunch of egg on their faces IMHO because many are behaving just like the right spewing hate and ridged opinions we all despise so much.

I kid about leaving. I have excellent job skills (and "I'm an excellent driver"), but I also have 80+ year old parents to care for and teenage boys to finish raising. Maybe in a few years I can leave...but living in WY is kinda like living in a separate country sometimes!

"General consensus"? That would mean an obvious majority of people. I haven't seen that at all. From what I have seen (and yes, this is anecdotal just like your assertion), most people seem to think that the ABC "debate" was a joke. I hear hardly anyone stating as their summary of the "debate" that "he did poorly". Is this a consensus of one? ;)

82. And because the presidency is a hard job...
We should definitely have unequal debates with unequal fluff questions. Oh yeah, and lets razor out as many voices as possible as early as possible, and while we are at it lets through in some questions that are uncomfortable for the candidates we don't like.

Oh wait, your logic really doesn't work does it. Using such a technique will surely give us the candidate whose virtue will be the one that the media lobs the most underhand slow-softball pitches to.

But you're right though, let's toughen him up a little bit. The interviewers should have asked him why he's a child molestor, why he cheats on his wife with gay prostitutes, why he had flag burning parties in his backyard, and why he helped to fund the terrorists that took down the twin towers. I mean, if he can't handle these simple questions, how is he suppose to run our government, right?

"nutshell" synopsis! It reflects the replies on the abc blog, too.

"Congratulations ABC--you now hold the title for the worst debate in the history of televised debates! With tonight's performance, the news media has sunk to a low I didn't think was even possible. For what should have been an important debate before an important primary, your hosts spent the majority of time asking inane "Entertainment Tonight"/gotcha questions. And to the commenter who said that this was finally a fair debate and that it's about time Obama answered questions everybody wanted to know--maybe if you stopped watching Fox News and did a little surfing on YouTube or, heaven forbid, go to Obama's website to actually learn about his positions and policies, gee, maybe you could be an informed voter."

"This was the most pathetic and useless debate every broadcast. ABC could not possibly have done a more botched job at moderating the debate and asking relevant questions. This was simply an embarrassment and ultimately calls into question the integrity of ABC News and their hosts. Just disgusting, and I am truly appalled that Fox News put on a more professional broadcast than ABC. Shameful.WORST DEBATE EVER. EVER."

The so-called "local channel" package of ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS is an additional $5/month through Dish Network. I had canceled it sometime back because it was a foolish waste of money, except for maybe PBS every now and then, but about 10 minutes before the debate I realized I could ask that it be turned on again, even for a brief while. aarrrgh--ABC OWES ME!! I will call satellite co. today and shut it off again--maybe I'll be prorated for 12 hours instead of 30 days.

67. Waste of time..
I thought okay, they are going to ask Obama about the Rev, because George and Charlie may have been in a coma for the last few weeks. They didn't hear Obama's speech on race, they didn't watch him on the View. Moving right along, then Obama is asked him about some guy in a group called the Weather Underground, I'm thinking wasn't that the group that Tupac was in, my hubby said, no that was the Digital Underground..Remember the song "Humpty Hump"...Nevermind.

Obama please release the names of everyone that you've every spoken to, looked at , sat next to, ate lunch with.. and save the talking heads some time. I went to parties with people who smoke pot, some cheated on their spouses, a friend of a friend , of a friend did time in the slammer for domestic violence and we attended at least two of the same parties.

One party was a fundraiser for my nephew and the abuser donated money to our cause. Someone could say that two years ago Rainlillie and John Doe partied together and she took money from a guy who was arrested for domestic violence.

This country is in serious trouble, people are losing their homes and jobs. People are still dying in Iraq and I can't believe that the moderators wasted time asking ridiculous questions like "does Rev. Wright love America as much as you?" I wish Obama would have replied, George do you have a pen? Here's Rev Wright's number call him and ask him. They even asked about the FLAG PIN... Are you kidding me. ...They asked about the flag pin.

It was quite a spectacle. It's been reported that the Underground question came from Eddie Munster look alike Sean Hannity... The rest of the questions must have come from the other right wing parrots. George shouldn't have been a moderator, since he use to work for the Clinton's. I was disappointed, disgusted.... Oh yeah and bitter!

98. You're right. By the bar they set, there isn't a person
in the country who could pass their "guilt by association" test. Let's see. I'm a 50-ish housewife/part-time teacher who attended high school with two guys who were later convicted of espionage. I even acted in a play with one of them. And, when my daughter was in kindergarden she befriended a little girl whose dad was later arrested for embezzlement. And there was another dad in her school who is a registered sex offender. Oh, and a couple of my husband's cousins have had some legal issues.

Why am I not in jail?

and a snowball's chance in hell at that.

I'd have said, "Why don't you let me know when we'll be discussing issues that truly matter to the future of our country? In the meantime I'm going to go do something more meaningful, like watch my toenails grow." And walked off the stage.

Like I said, a snowball's chance in hell.

75. in my fantasy land
I'm trying to think about the questions that would be asked to McCain in bizarro world.

Do you think it's funny to joke about bombing Iran?
When you said "I don't know anything about the economy", is it just your self-deprecating to get away with not knowing SHIT about the economy?
Did you call your wife a cunt?
How do we know that you have gotten past your anger issues that have been well documented in the press?
What do you have against the GI Bill?
Hows about how you were tossed off that Board recently?
How come you are so embarassed to talk about the discussions that you had with Kerry about VP?
Hagee and Parsley?
You said that you are not going to get "into the dirt" with campaigning. John Weaver has formerly said about Karl Rove that even if George Bush did not start the smear campaign against you in your first presidential bid, he knew what was going on and could have stopped it. Can we get your word that Karl Rove is not working on your campaign?
Aren't you a McSellout?

Of course, the list goes on and on, but we all know that a Republican would never get asked the questions that Hillary and Obama will.

164. It has to be
I have to keep reminding myself, DU isn't the real world with all of the battles going on here. If I spend too much time in the primary discussion board I get very depressed. I was a John Edwards supporter and have now decided to support the democratic nominee. I have a tendency to stress when the fighting gets severe because the MSM will spin it out of control and then not cover anything McCain does. McCain has shown his temper, not been able to keep different sects of Muslims straight and still the MSM doesn't cover it.

I don't know if last night's debate will be like the general election. My gut tells me the republicans will keep on with the same old strategy that has worked. I am the odd ball in my family as I am the only progressive and they were thrilled with the debate last night. Their biggest fear is that Senator Obama has a teflon coat and I tell them that he has done nothing wrong to have any of the gates stick. Senator Clinton has made some horrific blunders but either would be so much better than McCain. Tempers have gotten out of control and although I agree Senator Obama will be the nominee I cannot hate Senator Clinton. I reserve my disdain for republicans and cannot wait until, "We, the people" have shouted our choice and it's heard around the world. We have had quite enough and I hope I don't see another republican president in my life, daughter's life and of my grand children's lives and I don't even have grandchildren.

I keep telling them the democrats will unite behind the candidate and McCain's chances of becoming president will be like a snowball lasting in hell.

Just as the media trained their guns on Hillary when she was the front-runner, they are now training their guns on Obama. Given that Obama will likely be the front-runner into November, then President for eight years after that, we might just as well get used to this now.

I am sure all those candidates who fell by the wayside would love to be the one under attack right now.

If you noticed when Obama wanted to continue without an attack toward Clinton on this subject, Clinton held him to the subject by saying, well, your campaign attacked me. She wanted to get an attack from him, but Obama dismissed that as well by saying that was the campaign and only after being asked this a Bosnia question.

183. In one sense, Obama finally got the treatment he deserves
Very clever post, but I didn't see the debate as biased toward Clinton so much as biased toward irrelevance – to what we might call Republican general election issues. (Gibson was also quite concerned with some real Republican issues – a possible increase in Capital Gains taxes and in eliminating the Payroll Tax cap, on both of which he made very misleading statements.) The difference would seem to be that whereas Clinton was comfortable in irrelevance and given her druthers would dwell there forever, Obama was clearly perturbed by the nature of the questions and said so.

Personally, I would have liked him to say so much more strongly. In one very important sense, Obama finally got the treatment he deserves. Defending his debate performance, George Stephanopoulos has explained that since the candidates are not far apart policy-wise, the core of the nomination fight has been about these so-called character issues.<1> One can take issue with why that’s so, and especially the media’s own role in making it so, but it is also true that Obama has used the world’s greatest stage to say remarkably little concrete about the fundamental problems of America, and what he would do differently from the Clintons. Indeed during the debate he praised the foreign policy of Bush Sr.

Now there may be good reasons why Obama does not take to task America and those that run America, why he praises Bush Sr and Reagan, why his first act as Senator was to affirm Bush Jr’s 2004 presidential election victory, and why he allowed the Democratic Leadership Committee to use his popularity to defeat progressive candidates in Democratic Party primaries. Maybe being a centrist or a “uniter” is what it takes to win. Perhaps if he were to say more, he would be killed. But whereas Kucinich, Gravel, Paul, Nader, or, to a lesser degree, Edwards, really did take up issues that separated them from others seeking their party’s nomination, Obama has not.

He gave a great speech on race and is, generally, a fantastic speaker. Hell, he seems like a great guy. Given the chance, he might be a great president. Maybe the greatest president ever. Might just save the world. I listen to him and am tempted myself to drink the Kool Aid. But, for chrissake, he’s had an extraordinary pulpit for going on four years, been running for president for sixteen months, and been running mano-a-mano against Hilary Clinton of all people for the past two months, and in all that time has said nothing of the real ails of America beyond the current White House occupant, nothing concrete even to distinguish an Obama presidency from the Clintons or for that matter, Bush Sr.

Maybe “Hope” and “Change” and “Optimism” is a winning strategy, but if Obama wants the media to focus on substantive issues, is it too much to ask him to say – substantively – why not Clinton?
