22. I hope you're right. I don't think the debate will be a deciding moment, except that Hillary may
have re-introduced herself as acceptable. And if Obama is badly hurt by the "bitter" comments then she will finally be able to take advantage. She may not have been able until now due to the Bosnia story. But she might have finally dealt with it tonight. That story is the beginning, middle, and end of why her campaign has collapsed over the past 3 weeks. Her answer was good, but she should have hammered home her point about the fact that she was the one who literally wrote the book that told the story correctly. That's her best defense against the charge that she deliberately lied. But she did mention the book, and that was important.

15. Panader, I'll repost here what I wrote in an earlier thread where someone who missed the debate
asked the same question.

Nobody won or lost the debate. There was nothing special or horrible about it. They both did fine. Neither had a big slip-up or a big succusful moment. All this talk about biased moderators and bad questions is silly IMO. To me it was just another debate. This one focused (for the first half) on the candidates being forced to answer questions that they hadn't fully addressed--Bosnia, Wright&Ayers, etc. Their answers were fine.

The only really good/bad moment for the candidates worked in Obama's favor (and I'm a big Hillary backer). He had a great reply to something she said on Social Security and she got 5 seconds to reply before they cut to commercial. That may have hurt her slightly, but it was hardly a knockout. (Although I can't see how Obama supporters are complaining since the big decision by the moderators tonight which may have affected one of the candidates was the decision to go to commercial at that point).

I doubt this debate will change anything, other then Obama looking foolish if he turns down the North Carolina debate after the ratings for this one come out. Any debate on network television is going to get much better ratings then one on cable, I suspect. And I think that will turn up the pressure on him to take the NC debate on CBS.

and i think Obama got questioned more aggressively... but this wasn't much of anything new.

Same old hack gotcha non-issues, gaffs and spin.

I do not think either did badly.

But the overall "debate" was just more hostile and smarmy towards both candidates than previous debates.

This was an attempt at a slime job by ABC, and neither one fell for the bait. WaPo and Kos so far have already noticed, and they won't be the last to condemn the debate either. The other networks would be totally foolish to pass on an opportunity to discredit a rival and make themselves look good in comparison (regardless if they actually deserve it).

Obama and HRC did ok, given what they had to put up with. However, Charlie and Georgy must die. Make their blogs explode... no, make everyone's blogs explode. MSNBC, CNN, hell, even FOX. Let them all know we weren't fooled.

(edit- damn I hate typos.)

For those who didn't see, the debate in a nutshell

Mod: Senator Clinton, how do you feel about Iraq?
Hillary: I feel we should leave.

Mod: Senator Obama, why do you hate America?
Obama: I love America, it's been good to me.

Mod: Senator Clinton, do you feel that poor people should have more money?
Hillary: Absolutely

Mod: Sen. Obama, when was the last time you and Reverend Wright plotted to blow up an Embassy?
Obama: Can't we just talk about the issues instead of this tabloid stuff?

Mod: Senator Clinton, what is your kitten agenda
Hillary: I feel kittens are soft and fluffy and should be cared for.

Mod: Senator Obama, someone you went to grade school with was arrested 8 years ago for kicking a kitten. Why do you hate kittens?
Obama: How is this relevant at all?

Mod: Senator Clinton, tell us exactly how brave you were in overcoming your husband's adultery?
Hillary: i was very brave. God helped me.

Mod: Senator Obama, it's all over the internet that you are an evil Muslim elitist terrorist. Why are you an evil Muslim elitist terrorist?
Obama: I'm not. And weren't you just asking me about my CHRISTIAN pastor?
Mod: The one you blow up embassies with?
Obama: What? Are you serious.

Mod: We have to take a commercial. Senator Clinton, we realize that we haven't paid enough attention to you and we deeply apologize.
Hillary: Quite alright.

32. And her promise to "massively retaliate" against millions of innocent people?
Was that music to your ears?

How about her idea for an "umbrella" of little serf states we'll protect mafia-style in addition to Israel?

CLINTON: Well, in fact, George, I think that we should be looking to create an umbrella of deterrence that goes much further than just Israel. Of course I would make it clear to the Iranians that an attack on Israel would incur massive retaliation from the United States, but I would do the same with other countries in the region.

...we've got to deter other countries from feeling that they have to acquire nuclear weapons. You can't go to the Saudis or the Kuwaitis or UAE and others who have a legitimate concern about Iran and say: Well, don't acquire these weapons to defend yourself unless you're also willing to say we will provide a deterrent backup and we will let the Iranians know that. Yes, an attack on Israel would trigger massive retaliation, but so would an attack on those countries that are willing to go under this security umbrella and forswear their own nuclear ambitions...

More war. I'm surprised she didn't cackle with glee.

41. Keep staring at your pictures instead of the numbers. ABC Poll Results
Democratic Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama squared off ahead of next week's crucial Pennsylvania primary.

Who won the Democratic debate?

Sen. Barack Obama
20,604

Sen. Hillary Clinton
7,223

It was a tie
2,157

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/DemocraticDebate/popup?id=4668064

And they're all like that. Well, with the exception of trash sites like HillaryIs44 where polls are the equivalent of an attendance roster for the forum.

and didn't address what's important in this country. It was half over before they came to anything with any substance. Yes Georgie and Gibson should've prepared better, then maybe the debate would've been a serious discourse.

Edit: typos

64. Read this Tom Shales review. Says it all.
When Barack Obama met Hillary Clinton for another televised Democratic candidates' debate last night, it was more than a step forward in the 2008 presidential election. It was another step downward for network news -- in particular ABC News, which hosted the debate from Philadelphia and whose usually dependable anchors, Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, turned in shoddy, despicable performances.

For the first 52 minutes of the two-hour, commercial-crammed show, Gibson and Stephanopoulos dwelled entirely on specious and gossipy trivia that already has been hashed and rehashed, in the hope of getting the candidates to claw at one another over disputes that are no longer news. Some were barely news to begin with.

more . . .
