Democratic presidential rivals Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are battling it out on the economic front in Pennsylvania by putting forward different development proposals in a bid to woo union and working class support.
Addressing a conference of the powerful AFL-CIO labour union in Philadelphia this morning, Obama lashed out at the Bush administration, saying it ignores workers' interests in favour of those of the wealthy, and pledged to invest billions to establish a green energy sector and to bolster US infrastructure.
Meanwhile, at an economic summit hosted by her campaign in Pittsburgh today, Clinton announced a package of tax incentives aimed at discouraging companies from shipping jobs overseas and fostering growth in the high-tech industry.
She proposed increasing tax credits for research and development and to aid communities facing global competition. Her plan would establish a $500m fund to create green manufacturing jobs.http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/apr/02/barackobama.hillaryclinton?gusrc=rss&feed=worldnewsThe article goes on to state that 48% of PA voters believe the economy / jobs is the most important issue to them.
