Let's Tally Obama's Lies in the Debate!
Edited on Thu Apr-17-08 03:11 PM by Austinitis
It's like an Easter-Egg hunt! They're hidden all over the transcript!

NUMBER ONE:
Lie:
Mr. GIBSON: But do you still favor the registration of guns? Do you still favor the licensing of guns?

And in 1996, your campaign issued a questionnaire, and your writing was on the questionnaire that said you favored a ban on handguns.

SENATOR OBAMA: No, my writing wasn't on that particular questionnaire, Charlie. As I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns.

Fact:

You can see the questionnaire http://www.politico.com/static/PPM43_080328_obama_iviquestionaire_091096.html">here. Obama's handwriting is on the first page, but tonight he said flatly, "no, my writing was not on that particular questionnaire."

There were, in fact, two versions of the questionnaire, filed under Obama's name in 1996 when he was running for the Illinois State Senate. One version has Obama's handwriting on it, one does not. Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor subsequently told Politico that the senator scribbled a few notes on the first page of the questionnaire, but did not read the response to the question about banning handguns, on a subsequent page.

Either way, it seems a rather lame explanation.

NUMBER TWO:
Lie: "I have never said that I don't wear flag pins or refuse to wear flag pins."
Fact: Obama did insist won't wear the flag pin.

Contrast his statement last night with what he said on Oct. 3, 2007, when a TV reporter in Iowa asked why he wasn't wearing a flag pin: "You know, the truth is that, right after 9/11, I had a pin. Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that (pin) became a substitute for, I think, true patriotism, which is (about) speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security. I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest. Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great and, hopefully, that will be a testimony to my patriotism."

NUMBER Three:
Lie:
And, you know, the notion that somehow that the American people are going to be distracted once again by comments not made by me but by somebody who is associated with me, that I have disowned, I think doesn't give the American people enough credit.

Fact: I think we all remember Obama's "I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community" comments from the speech.

It seems like someone has an honesty problem. Pitch in everyone! It'll be a contest!

What is your point? You think Obama sympathizes with the Weather Underground that existed only until he was about 8 and has been a secret admirer of theirs ever since he saw them on newsreel in between Tarzan and Bomba of the Jungle movies at the Saturday afternoon movie matinees he saw as a kid?

Your first claim is nonsense. He didn't say he'd never wear one... the context is clear - he wouldn't wear one as a reflexive gesture during 9/11-fever.

As for the second... two versions? Do I really need to explain further?

And as for the third... that "disown" refers to the COMMENTS... duh! Grammar is hard, but not that hard!

58. Please note this:
The survey says:

Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.

(emphasis mine)

Obama was asked about this issue by Charlie Gibson in a *national* setting in regard to running for *national* office. So I find it quite possible he supported a local ban on handguns in Illinois without ever favoring an "all-out" national ban on handguns. I don't see a lie here, or at least any definitive proof of a lie.

Also, not that it matters a great deal, but I see no indication of Obama's handwriting on the survey in regard to the handgun issue--contrary to what Gibson said. There is some handwriting there about something else, but is it his writing? I don't know; do you? So I don't know that he lied about that either.

He didn't say he didn't fill it out. We seem to have gotten around the gun issue bit, so all you have left is to whine about whether he filled it out, or someone filled it out for him? Pathetic.

66. okay, if that's so, then...
where is the lie here? I've never heard this, but if he says he's not the one who filled the survey out, and someone else filled it out and presumably answered that question incorrectly, then where is any evidence he's lying about it? He either read and approved the answers or he didn't, and he's saying he didn't. Can you prove otherwise? His answer may be "lame" in your mind, that don't make it a lie, friend. Not by a long shot.

1) The presence of some unknown handwriting on the document doesn't prove he read the document. It's on the first page, the gun questions are on the last page.

2) Maybe he forgot, after 12 farking years, that he scribbed something on a piece of paper? is that too lame for you?

47. That's really desperate: "I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest."
"I have never said that I don't wear flag pins or refuse to wear flag pins.

Decided and refused mean the same thing?

It appears at that time he decided not to wear one (like I decided not to wear blue today, albeit for a different reason), and then changed his mind.

That is not a lie.

Your number three is ridiculous because you obviously are trying to distort by taking the comment out of context:

MR. STEPHANOPOULOS: You've disowned him?

SENATOR OBAMA: The comments, comments that I've disowned. Then that is not something that I think --

I guess that's why posters like you exclude the link.

74. It isn't Obama's handwriting
A campaign aide wrote the notes. You can find samples of Obama's script online and it differs markedly from the scrawl on the survey.

78. Hahahaha! Nice try...
There was a questionnaire done in 1996 that was filled out by a staffer. WOW! A QUESTIONNAIRE!!!!

On the STUPID FUCKING Flag Pin "issue", that's pretty squirrelly of you to say that's a "lie". Obama's point about questioning someone's patriotism because of outsourced jewelry may be over your little head.

And the last indication of your desperation, you left out his next sentence where he said he did not agree with the Wright quotes, another STUPID FUCKING issue.

Wow. It's like dealing with pimple-faced Repugs who stay at their mommy's house around here.

79. It's a survey that he lied about
both when he said he didn't fill it out and when he said his handwriting wasn't on it.

82. You forgot the lie he told about Bosnia: his campaign has been e-mailing the press
about Bosnia constantly, while he pretended he did not continue bringing up the issue.

it is disruptive?
