ABC "flag pin" voter discussed same issue in NYT on April 4th
Edited on Thu Apr-17-08 11:37 PM by BattyDem
Thanks to Condem, who recognized her and mentioned it in this thread.

I did the Google thing and I found the article Condem was talking about. Her name is Nash McCabe.

Caption from the NY Times photo:
"How can I vote for a president who won’t wear a flag pin?" NASH McCABE, unemployed clerk-typist.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/04/us/politics/04penn.html

ABC transcript:
"And, Senator Obama, I want to do one more question, which goes to the basic issue of electability. And it is a question raised by a voter in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, a woman by the name of Nash McCabe."

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/DemocraticDebate/Story?id=4670271&page=2

There are over 12 million people in PA yet two major news outlets managed to "stumble upon" the same woman. There's no way that's a coincidence. ABC went looking for her. They WANTED that question!

Edited to add photos. Thanks to Ichingcarpenter for finding the photos. :-)

175. About that flag-pin question…
So Nash McCabe wasn’t located at random at all. Instead, someone at ABC News decided that they wanted to go after Obama on the patriotism issue, and they actively sought a Pennsylvanian who they knew wanted to bring it up. I assume they thought it would sound better if “a typical voter” asked the question instead of Charlie Gibson. “You see, we’re only raising the issue the voters really care about,” they can claim.

151. Amazing how the woman compaling about the flag pin doesn't wear one herself.
Personally, I don't support Obama but wearing the flag pin a criteria to be a candidate?

Candidates especially Democrats need to say wearing a flag pin doesn't make one an American.

Usually camera crews don't just randomly enter people's houses and tell them to ask a question, they obviously had pre-made arrangements.

This was just so completely disingenuous - the whole debate. Just an utter disgrace!!!!!

Anybody care to ask about the shallow, manufactured, more-patriotic-than-thou drive to wear cheap-ass, Made-in-China flag pins to prove to the moron contingent that we're sufficiently loyal Americans?

she's just not bitter enough in realizing the corporate govt we have is not working for our interest at all.

I'm actually shocked they were stupid enough to use her as the person asking the question, but then again, perhaps no one else has agreed to be on TV asking such a bullshit question, albeit one that gets sent around the net in mass forwards - I feel those people wouldn't vote for Obama anyhow!

So...let's back track a bit....ABC (Always Believing Clinton) had hundreds of possible questions to ask during the debate about a host of topics. A lot got shoved aside because they didn't have time for them. But the questions about the dopey flag pin made the cut? And Hillary got a bye from the question in spite of her not wearing one either? This is stupid beyond belief!

I think about how new citizens have to pass tests about our government that most of our adult citizens probably couldn't pass...

I don't want there to be discrimination to keep people from voting, but I want some way to screen out the people who vote based on "that name sounds familiar" or "in theory, though I never will, I'd enjoy drinking a beer with them". Sigh.

The flag is a piece of material, on a pole. It does not require users to believe in it.

It's a "symbol," Nash Rambler, not to be confused with "cymbals," between which I'd like to repeatedly clap your ugly head.

From Time article written by Joe Klein in 2006 interview with Obama:

"For example, I was going to a fancy prep school, and my mother was on food stamps while she was getting her Ph.D." That is his own words, not some right-wing or Clinton lie.

Hardly the same experience as this woman!

I was on food stamps when I first went back to college for about a year (my husband worked at Wal-mart - rat bastards - and we had a new baby). The welfare "reform" passed by Bill Clinton was ludicrous to take that benefit away from people seeking a UNDER-GRADUATE degree full-time. God forbid we move people from welfare to work with an education. But, on food stamps while getting a PHD! And, BTW, the prep school Obama attended was in Hawaii, while he was living with his grand parents. So, she was on food stamps and Obama wasn't even living with her full time, pathetic. But, he doesn't mention that in his stump speeches. Exactly the kind of people cited as the need for welfare reform, which ended up screwing people trying to get an associates or bachelor degree so the didn't have to work at Wal-mart.

I don't support Obama or Clinton (but I'll vote democratic in the election no matter what), but give this woman a break. Biden would, and he would probably hope his former supporters had their facts straight before spouting off and attacking some poor barely middle class woman. I always loved the way he made everyone feel equal, regardless of their education, beliefs or background. I sure as hell don't see that in Obama or his supporters. If we don't care for his politics, were just a bunch of dumb racists (I even saw that said directly in this thread). It amazes me that Obama's supporters would go after this woman with such vitriol, where is your compassion? So, she is patriotic, big deal. I wouldn't base my vote on a flag pin either, but I'm not going to attack a possible democratic voter because it means something to them. Elitist indeed. Maybe she has family serving or lost in Iraq/Afghanistan, or maybe she just grew up in a generation that had a different view of the flag and patriotism. And it is her right to identify with whom she chooses, it isn't for us to decide whom she feels can relate better to her life. So judgmental.....

Blame the stupid question on ABC, and blame them if the sought her out, don't attack this woman.

Grow up....

:spank:

167. sorry I offended you but I think you misinterpreted what I meant
Not that her experience was like Obama's, but that she argued that *Clinton's* experience was more like hers than Obama.

If you think Nash is patriotic, then we have such vastly different views of patriotism that we're going to talk right past each other.

I don't claim to be Biden's spokesperson and I'm pretty sure he's not losing any sleep over what I write on an internet discussion board. I also seriously doubt Nash is reading DU and crying about it.

186. you did not offend
But you are judging this woman on who's experience she identifies with and I would argue she has nothing in common with either candidate. Obama's so called experience with living on food stamps is nothing compared to this womans life. Perhaps she identifies more with Hillary because, like Hillary, she has worked hard to keep her family together, or identifies with Hillary because Bill has had recent heart problems. She says herself she thinks Hillary is a hard worker, and I really can't argue with that. Who knows, but certainly she has no more reason to identify with Obama than with Hillary. Neither candidate really knows what its like to live truly underprivileged in this country.

In fact, I admire Hillary for going into the Senate where the same republicans who tried to impeach her husband now respect her and her work ethic. I don't see that kind of respect for Obama from the Senate, in fact I would argue that most of his fellow Senators just think he used the office as a stepping stone. Biden certainly paid his dues and deserved a lot more respect and attention from the MSM the he got.

Nash's ideas of patriotism are not mine, but I'm not going to judge her. If were are going to defend peoples right to use the flag as a sign of distress or protest, for example, then that applies equally to those who see the use of the flag as a way to support their country. The right cuts both ways. To belittle it is to disrespect her rights to support her country as she wishes.

No, your obviously not Biden's sopkesperson and no, he hasn't lost sleep over internet discussion boards. But, maybe Nash does have a computer, maybe she does pay attention, do you really think you know this woman that well from a one minute sound bite question or a snippet in a NY Times article? None of us really know who sits behind these keyboards. But, my point was Biden would never be happy if his supporters attacked this woman the way the Obama people have viciously attacked her on this thread. Its disgusting, another reason I just can't warm up to his campaign, his supporters don't inspire Hope or Unity in me.

I don't think Hillary or Obama can win and we are screwed. I think we will have McLame for another four years.

187. its a asinine article
Because the implication is that the "reasons" voters in the area aren't hot on Obama is because they refuse to acknowledge their own under lying raciest feelings. Frankly that is bullshit and is just as condescending as this thread!

Are there some who won't vote for Obama because he is black? Of course. Would they admit it to a reporter? I doubt it. But that does not mean every white person who won't vote for Obama is doing it because they are racists at heart. Many of the reasons cited in that article are legitimate:

"Because he voted “present” too often as an Illinois state senator. Because he speaks very well, but has not talked about reviving the coal industry. Because he would not command the respect of the military. Because there is something unsettling about his perfect calm, they say."

The same is true for Hillary. Are there some who won't vote for her because she is a woman? Of course, but they wouldn't admit it to a reporter either. But that doesn't make everyone who won't vote for her a sexist.

And really, what is wrong with not voting for him because you "have a feeling" about him. How many people won't vote for Hillary because the hate her. Last I checked, hate is a feeling. The difference, we know a lot of stuff to hate about Hillary, but with Obama we don't know much, but maybe his lack of substance or experience makes us nervous (another feeling). Neither position is racist or sexist, but perhaps uninformed (as is most of the electorate). BTW - it is the MSM that feeds the racist/sexist crap because it drives ratings and makes them money.

Anyway, no offense taken.

154. According to the article, she doesn't like Bush or McCain
McCabe sympathizes with working-class people who got in over their heads during the housing boom. She opposes the Iraq war and thinks President Bush has hurt the country. She doesn't support Republican John McCain because he's too close to Bush.

On paper, her stances make her as likely to support Obama as Clinton.

But she sees a difference between the two. In Clinton, she sees someone who has struggled for years, just like her, and has earned the right to be president. In Obama, she sees someone who rose like a rocket, always has a smooth explanation for everything — whether it's about his former preacher or the flag pin — and who makes it all look too easy.

"That's what upsets me about Barack Obama," she says. "He takes everything so nonchalantly."

She is proof of Obama's comment on people hurting because of our economy, an economy that is now in large part shaped by federal government policies of the last 27 years, who is making a "guns, god, gays and patriotism" evaluation of a candidates, almost as if she is "clinging" to those issues rather than talk about what's really important.

97. "How can I vote for a president who won't wear a flag pin?"
OMFG, sweetie, NONE of them wear one! Not Obama. Not Clinton. Not McCain. Poor widdle thing, wha'cha gonna do?

Nash, honey, you are an example of what's wrong with America! Seek help, sweetie, you need it! Flag pins don't put food on the table. Flag pins don't provide health care. Flag pins won't bring our troops home. Flag pins won't pull the economy out of the shitter. Flag pins won't save the housing crisis. Flag pins won't save the Earth.

GET A FeCKING CLUE!

And to abc: go cheney yourselves for seeking this wacko out and giving her more airtime!

100. And those flag decals won't get them into heaven, either...
While digesting Reader’s Digest
In the back of a dirty book store
A plastic flag with gum on the back
Fell out on the floor.
Well,I picked it up and ran outside
And slapped it on my windowshield.
And If I could see ol’ Betsy Ross
I’d tell her how good I feel.

(Chorus:)
But, you flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven anymore.
They’re already overcrowded
From your dirty little war
Now Jesus don’t like Killin’
No matter what the reasons for.
And your flag decal won’t get you into Heaven anymore.

Well,I went to the Bank this morning
And the cashier said to me
If you join the Christmas Club
We'll give you ten of them flags for free.
I didn’t mess a round a bit
I took him up on what he said
And stuck them stickers all over my car
And one on my wife’s forehead.

(Chorus:)
But, you flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven anymore.
They’re already overcrowded
From your dirty little war
Now Jesus don’t like Killin’
No matter what the reasons for.
And your flag decal won’t get you into Heaven anymore.

Well,I got my windshield so filled with flags I couldn’t see
So I ran my car upside a curb and right into a tree
By the time they got a doctor down
I was already dead,
And I’ll never understand
Why the man,
Standing in the Pearly Gates said…

(Chorus:)
But your flag decal won’t get you into Heaven anymore,
We’re already overcrowded from your dirty little war
Now Jesus don’t like killin’
No matter what the reasons for.
And your flag decal won’t get you into Heaven anymore.

Thank you, John Prine!

So why not question Mcbush's patriotism?

153. She's not a Republican, though

173. The real story here is what else would she or did she ask that ABC did not say about her and her
situation?
From the

McClatchy also took a closer look at McCabe’s circumstances and found a very sad story.

But to understand why Obama rubs McCabe wrong is to go beyond the question of what a flag pin has to do with patriotism — it’s not really about the flag pin, she said in a telephone interview Thursday — and consider McCabe’s life. It’s no Hawaiian prep school and Ivy League story, unlike Obama’s. It’s a slice of working-class Pennsylvania, the core of Hillary Clinton’s support there.

McCabe met her husband, Lloyd, in April 1983 at a dance. They married two months later. Six months after that, she says, he was injured in a coal mine accident. He hasn’t worked since.

They never had children. He had back surgery. The muscle relaxers he took damaged his heart. He’s had three bypasses, nine angioplasties, seven stents and a pacemaker. Three months ago doctors found a brain tumor. His choice: surgery that he may or may not survive, or life in a wheelchair.

Over 25 years of marriage, McCabe was the breadwinner. She said it took eight years to get her husband disability payments, during which time they racked up huge bills.

“I was a nurse’s aide, a cashier,” McCabe said. “From 1996 to 2000, I was a manager of a cleaning company. I started out as secretary and worked my way up to manager, and then the company decided to close. It took me almost two-and-a-half years to find a job that I got laid off from recently” as a clerk-typist. She has a high school diploma.

Ironically, she sounds like one of the frustrated small-town voters Obama has been reaching out to for quite a while.

Perhaps if ABC News had focused a little more on McCabe’s economic circumstances, and a little less on her flag-pin interest, we may have been able to learn something useful in the debate.

It’s worth noting that the original NYT article that quoted McCabe and made her interesting to reporters wasn’t about questioned patriotism; it was about racial attitudes in western Pennsylvania. It led Bunch to conclude:

So, the New York Times is basically stating that many voters are finding odd or vague reasons not to support a candidate who president who happens to be black. And without any thought to the subtext, ABC News plucked one of those reasons and brought it to the center stage of democracy.

To be extra clear, none of this is a criticism of Nash McCabe — my heart goes out to her and her husband, and there is no evidence here that her views on Obama and the flag, which I personally think are misguided, are racially motivated.

Instead, it is yet another indictment of ABC News, which was eager to act is if there’s no racial subtext to this election, other than its question about affirmative action for Obama’s “affluent African-American daughters.” Obama’s been under fire for the last week for suggesting that Rust Belt voters — facing a swirl of feelings about the economy and “people who don’t look like them” — are wooed by wedge issues.

ABC’s contribution to that discussion: Wooing voters with wedge issues.
