Another Coup By HRC; She Loses BOTH MoveOn AND FDL In One Fell Swoop

Hillary Clinton Attacks MoveOn
By: Jane Hamsher Friday April 18, 2008 2:30 pm

The Huffington Post headline reads "Hillary Slams Democratic Activists." I'm being told that Hillary Clinton was caught on tape disparaging Barack Obama because he's being supported by MoveOn, and that they opposed military action in Afghanistan.

I've tried to stay out of the pie fights of late, but as a long-term defender of MoveOn and other progressive organizations -- this is completely unacceptable.

I defended Hillary Clinton when she refused to bow to right wing pressure and condemn MoveOn over the "General Betrayus" ad (and was sad when she finally capitulated). MoveOn are valuable progressive partners, who have been with us on Donna Edwards, net neutrality, trying to bring an end to the war, FISA and other issues we've been fighting for.

They've accepted the challenge of organizing the left in the virtual arena and done an amazing job that the right struggles to replicate. They now have 3 million members, of which I'm one. And their skill at online organization and movement building has developed a model that both of the Democratic candidates have been able to replicate and learn from, acting as a democratizing influence and making candidates more responsive to the public at large and less to high dollar donors.

MoveOn didn't oppose military action in Afghanistan but I did. Not because I thought it was the wrong thing to do but because I was quite certain George Bush would bungle it and we'd just wind up spending billions on a bunch of junk that would make his buddies rich and a lot of poor people in the poorest country in the world would die senselessly. And I was right.

Does Hillary Clinton not want my vote either?

And stop supporting namby-pamby panderers who give the neocons everything they want and let the plutocrats screw the working class.

Here you go girlfriend!
At a small closed-door fundraiser after Super Tuesday, Sen. Hillary Clinton blamed what she called the "activist base" of the Democratic Party -- and MoveOn.org in particular -- for many of her electoral defeats, saying activists had "flooded" state caucuses and "intimidated" her supporters, according to an audio recording of the event obtained by The Huffington Post.
"Moveon.org endorsed -- which is like a gusher of money that never seems to slow down," Clinton said to a meeting of donors. "We have been less successful in caucuses because it brings out the activist base of the Democratic Party. MoveOn didn't even want us to go into Afghanistan. I mean, that's what we're dealing with. And you know they turn out in great numbers. And they are very driven by their view of our positions, and It's primarily national security and foreign policy that drives them. I don't agree with them. They know I don't agree with them. So they flood into these caucuses and dominate them and really intimidate people who actually show up to support me."

This was a very interesting event. There were people taking hard stands before the Huffpo piece was posted and after the FDL post had been taken down.

It was really interesting to watch unfold. I was responding the the DU poster who took a stand before he saw what was really going on. The FDL poster did the same, but had the foresight to take it down.

Something really weird is going on. The comments on the Huffpo site are pretty funny. Where did you get the letter that you cited? Did you ever see an actual Huffpo piece?

I am wondering if this is some kind of stunt to just show how people will react to a headline. My comments have to do with the people that are recommending your OP without ever trying to find out more about this.

120. That does it.....it's not Hillary's trashing of "Move On" but here trashing of FDL...and her buddy
Schumer must agree with her because back in '06..I posted on DU a Press Conference where a reporter asked him about the "Left of the Dem Party" and how they were pushing Congress over their agenda...and Schumer's reply...is dismissive, snarky tone was: "When they push...we push back." He then turned his attention away from the reporter.

That's it Hillary...she's DONE! I can't defend a thing she says after this one... She's just like her buddy "CHUCKIE" the "do nothing" but "bloviate."

Neither would ever hold anyone accountable for the most egregious of trashing of our Country and our Constitution, BOR's. DONE..!

129. The subtext of "who ya gonna vote for?" pervades this episode and others.
This is the struggle for control over the Democratic party - since the corporatists now own the GOP lock, stock, and barrel. The strategy has been evident for decades. For every 'centrist' threatening to vote GOP, it takes TWO 'leftists' to threaten to sit out or vote Green. THIS is why the venom and vitriol is so over-the-top against anyone who has the temerity to vote Nader ... remembering when the New Deal actually represented the working class. THIS is why so many people are disaffected (independents) and, not willing to swim through the muck and spin, take refuge in "they're all alike."

I continue to assert that the working class feels caught between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. They turn to their bosses - working for that promotion or merit increase - and buy into the bullshit about "trickle down" and think that may be the best way to improve their economic lot in life. It's a long-established 'rule' in corporate life that the way to get ahead is work to get your boss promoted. The 'bargain' is premised in the mistaken view that 'loyalty' is a virtue that's rewarded. (Sadly, there is no virtue in seeking rewards.)

I only need look at the Perot campaign to know how the working class - especially blue collar (my roots) - buys into the 'trickle down' snake oil being peddled by those with insatiable appetites. Hell... I see it far too often even on DU, regurgitating the same old crap about how increasing the capital gains tax is somehow a "Bad Thing." What utter noxious nonsense!

(Sigh.) But all someone has to do is snap the whip of SCOTUS and 'social wedge issues' and everyone gets in line for more bitter ail.

134. How many "working class folks" have enough stock or assets to worry about "Capital Gains Tax"
yet with that and the "Inheritance (or as Repugs say: Death Tax) TAX they somehow feel they are part of the "entitled" who will be hit the same as Bill Gates, Warren Buffett or the rest of the "GANG IN CHARGE."

Goes back to Frank's Book: "What's the Matter with Kansas" that Obama was clumsy in his "Bitter Speech" trying to explain as badly as he put it.

150. That is a disingenuous assessment by Jane Hamsher.
Hillary Clinton voted no to condemn, specifically citing the right of MoveOn to publish the ad under the First Amendment. She took a lot of heat from the right wing. Obama did not even vote, he merely brushed it off as "silly," which of course it isn't "silly" to take a stand one way or the other, considering the uproar the ad caused.

Hillary has every right to condemn the sentiment expressed in the ad itself, but she still staunchly defended the right of MoveOn to publish the ad. Not a peep from Obama, the so-called Constitutional expert.

I personally thought the ad was in poor taste, despite my contempt for Petraeus behaving as a sycophant to bush. It is my opinion that such an ad lowers the tone of discourse in America, which is one of my main gripes about how Republicans operate; e.g., purple bandaids at their Convention. When the GOP publicly criticizes or mocks someone who wears or has worn the uniform because they fall out of line, the Democrats condemn that type of behavior. We don't need to do it ourselves just because it pacifies our anger.

84. The story is up now
At a small closed-door fundraiser after Super Tuesday, Sen.

Listen to the audio below:

Hillary is whining. I thought Obama was supposed to be the wimp.

supported Bill and Hillary through MonicaGate suffered losing friends and family members in our support. We were the ones who eventually worked to build the "Grass Roots" for the Dem Party. Do Bill & Hillary live in a "Glass Bubble" and think they survived because of BOB BENNETT's LEGAL EXPERTISE in getting BILL OFF?

Sheesh...Like STAB IN THE BACK TWICE! And, I'm not an Obama Supporter...so you can understand how pissed off I am...

133. Amazing considering MoveOn was started to defend against the attempt
to impeach and prosecute her husband over his lies about the affair. They brought a lot
of pressure to bear on Congress to censure and MOVE ON - hence the name of the group.

Talk about a Judas....:eyes:

136. It's very hard to find any stretch of the imagination to defend Hillary on this....

and "Judas" does come to mind...although HillarY never seemed to care about us Dem Activits...just like the rest of her Senate Comrades.. :-( I was still willing to remain neutral on her until the last states had voted...but this is the last straw.

139. It's not just about “losing” MoveOn...
Her being angry about that I can understand somewhat. Even her holding a grudge.

That's human nature—especially when one considers the irony of how MoveOn came to be.

It was originally called “Censure and Move On”—founded as a bulwark against the evils of Ken Starr's vendetta against Bill Clinton.

What is exceptionally heinous (not her “whining” to supporters, and that's exactly what it was) is her slandering a progressive FORCE with a straight-out-of-Karl-Rove's-mouth lie. Her bitter, 'how could they'-ish line about MoveOn “not supporting Afghan intervention” was a lie that Rove himself has repeatedly used to pillory the group.

Her trotting that out to her fat cats at that fund-raiser as some sort of “I'm not with them” bona fides makes one wonder about just who that financial base is and WHY SUCH A ROVIAN SENTIMENT WOULD BE FIGURED TO “PLAY” WITH THEM.

Jane Hamsher, who has been decidedly and quite fairly, NOT anti-Hillary said this last fall to Elizabeth Edwards:

“So here’s the rule. You never repeat right wing talking points to attack your own, ever. You never enter that echo chamber as a participant. Ever. You never give them a hammer to beat the left with. Just. Don’t. Do. It.”

Nuff' Said.

141. Good Point........since Jane has been very fair to be so neutal..
one does wonder why Hillary would make such a statement at a fundraiser...whether she was angry, rightfully at MoveOn for their coming out early for Obama, or not. Who was she trying to impress.

But, why did this recording surface right now...when she appeared at the fundraiser just after Super Tuesday.

It's like the way the Republican right (3+ / 0-)

reframed social justice issues in the late 60s and 70s to be about crime and menace. The Clinton campaign is trying to reframe the netroots as a menace to the heart of the Democratic base, ordinary working people.

It is critical that we don't overreact in ways that allow her campaign to exploit that meme. At the same, we need not be passive. Believe me, their success absolutely depends on our overreaction.

there seems to be a victim strategy a foot tonight in the Clinton camp.

Obama, at beginning of campaign, speaking of Hillary Clinton: "She'll say anything."

I guess the rules only apply to Hillary.

HuffPo Catches Hillary Dissing MoveOn

From the gigantic red letters and extremely unflattering photo of Hillary on the front page of Huffington Post today, you might have thought a security camera had caught her raiding the First National Bank of Scranton. But no. Turns out that a couple of months ago, she said a few things about certain liberal activists, particularly MoveOn, that were not entirely nice. Particularly about some tactics involved during the caucus contests.

Yep, thats all it is. On the audio, her voice is calm and her thoughts are quite reasonable. What a big load of nothing. And besides, as MoveOn does not exactly have a great reputation among the public at large, a Hillary vs MoveOn storyline might not be that bad. Personally, I think HuffPo might be in a bit of a panic that Hillary could win decisively in PA.
