Barack Obama's oratory and charisma have drawn comparions with the Kennedy brothers

(snip)
In her public endorsement of Mr Obama, Mrs Kennedy said: "Barack is so like Bobby...With courage, caring, and charisma, Senator Obama is leading us toward a kinder, gentler world."

(snip)
she told The Sunday Telegraph: "He's such an inspiring man and he'll be a great president for our country.

"He's just what we need, a breath of fresh air."

"It's remarkable. I have never seen Mom so energised by an election. She really means this," said Max (Kennedy), an attorney and writer.

2. As a full-time coordinator for RFK in 1968 in Oregon & California, this touches me deeply.
Some kind of a full-circle historical phenomenon, ending history's chapter on this passing era of murderous
tyranny, of rule by thugs, thieves and assassins.

Like Obama said, it is precisely from this tyranny that must re-declare our independence all over again, like we
declared our independence from that first King George.

12. My mother was an RFK campaign volunteer in Northern California
She saw him at a rally 3 days before he was killed.

On primary day, she voted, went to a reception and left early to watch the returns at home. She had the TV on in her living room, went to the kitchen to get a drink, and heard the shooting on the TV and instantly knew what had happened.

32. I am envious that you had the chance to know the man
God Bless you for your service. I admire him immensely and value his vision and agree completely with his quest to end the disgraceful poverty in our country. I was only 4 when RFK was assassinated. In another post I mentioned that my father, a Republican at the time, was hurt deeply by his loss - more so than JFK. A part of our nation died on that day. It has taken 40 years to find someone who can bring that back to us. :pals:

43. Well I did get to meet him once at the Oregonn headquarters
where he made a point of shaking my hand and thanking me for my work setting up the phone banks and setting up
his appearance at Portland State University. That was the only time I encountered him one-on-one. I'll never
forget the vast deepness of his sky-blue eyes. Such a clarity of vision.

So here we are, as you say 40 years later, to finish the job Bobby started. Thanks for sharing about your father.
That is really touching.

7. Obama is no Robert Kennedy
Who cares what she thinks? America needs to break away from th Kennedy/Reagan nostalgia-fest and get down to business. We don't hav etime for sentimentality. We need toughnees and fortitude (which Obama, based on the last debate, doesn't seem to have).

18. So, you would prefer to continue with the Bush/Clinton dynasty?
That combo has ran things for far too long that began when Bush Sr was VP beginning in '81. Think about that. That's over a quarter of a century! And if you think there's very much difference between the Clintons and Bushes, think again. The Bush/Clinton friendship didn't just begin when the Clintons left the White House. My guess is these two families are all you know as political leaders!

Isn't she the only person qualified to make this comparison? Why do you have to say anything ugly about Ethel Kennedy? I guess now we know why they aren't supporting your candidate.

36. Fark you and the horse you rode in on.
Mrs. Kennedy is very respected by a lot of people, and so was her husband. Would you have written the same tripe if she had endorsed Hilary Clinton?

And I didn't read that she said he was identical to RFK, just the he reminds her of him.

I'm going to shut up now before I really tell you what I think of what you said.

Hopefully, one of Hillary's supporters won't be as tactless to come in this thread and say, "Ethel Kennedy is dead to me."

That seems to be the rallying cry for them as of late.

19. RFK is the reason I remain a Democrat today
Even in this mess we are in today, I can still see in my mind's eye, what this country can be, should be, and will be. Yes, I still believe.

I was but a youngin when Bobby Kennedy ran in 1968, only 13. But he moved me. Because of him, I have remained a Democrat my entire life...I am still waiting for an America he had envisioned. Obama moves me in much the same way RFK did 40 yrs ago. It has been a long time since I felt this way...Together we can make it happen. I still believe.

Barack Obama endorsed by Robert Kennedy's widow Ethel Kennedy

By Philip Sherwell
Last Updated: 4:25pm BST 19/04/2008

Ethel Kennedy, the matriarch of America's greatest political dynasty, is back on the campaign trail for the first time since an assassin’s bullet brutally ended the presidential run of her husband Robert 40 years ago.
# Full coverage of the US Elections 2008
# Trail Mix 2008: Media: Obama's not-so-secret weapon?

Just days after turning 80 on April 11, Mrs Kennedy was leading three generations of her family seeking votes across Pennsylvania for Barack Obama,
a politician whose crowd-drawing ability and soaring rhetoric has often earned comparisons with both Robert, killed in June 1968, and his brother, President
After greeting residents of a senior citizens home in Scranton and leading a round of "Irish Eyes", she told The Sunday Telegraph: "He's such an inspiring man and he'll be a great president for our country.

"He's just what we need, a breath of fresh air." An energetic figure in blue blazer, grey trousers and pink scarf and sweater, she left the family compound in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, at dawn and flew to Pennsylvania for a long day of Get Out The Vote events at community centres, old people’s homes and college campuses. Long after dark, she was still shaking hands and urging people to vote for Mr Obama in Tuesday's primary.

And between campaign stops, she demonstrated a political mind as sharp as ever as she discussed singer Bruce Springsteen's endorsement of Mr Obama and tactics for a major Democratic dinner in the area this weekend.

Mrs Kennedy was accompanied in Scranton by two of her surviving nine children - son Max, 42, and daughter Rory, 39, with whom she was pregnant when Robert was shot dead - and Max's wife and his daughters, aged 13 and nine.

31. What an honor it is for Mrs. Kennedy to allow RFK to be compared to Obama
Edited on Sat Apr-19-08 07:27 PM by powergirl
She is the only person who has the right to make that comparison. I was 4 years old when RFK was murdered. My father told me that Bobby's death hurt even more than JFKs. (And my dad was a Republican at the time) I have read every biography I could find on the man. (note the avatar) He has always been what I have looked for in a president. And now I know why I want Obama to be the next president. It didn't click until right now. Thank you Mrs. Kennedy for this honor. :patriot:
